Successful Transition event with AFBE-UK Partner Subsea7 The transition event with Subsea7 provided students with a realistic context to practice and build confidence before entering the industry which will help them identify opportunities and offer a safe space to make mistakes. The event included presentations from the leadership team, a graduate panel, mock interviews, and assessment center tasks. It has been a fantastic partnership between AFBE-UK and Subsea7, our host for this event, allowing students to practice interview skills and learn more about Subsea7, generating excitement about future opportunities like internships and graduate placements. The Transition Programme is a series of dynamic workshops aimed at empowering students, recent graduates, and returners as they embark on their professional journeys. This event is dedicated to bridging the gap between BAME students and the engineering industry, providing essential support to address under-representation in the sector. Strategic Business Developer | Speaker & Story Teller | Community Builder | I Connect Talents to the Right Employers
SUCCEEDING AS A SUMMER TRAINEE 3 years ago, I was working for the first time as a summer trainee. It remains one of the most exciting moment in my professional career. In the same year, I was nominated as the best summer trainee at Wärtsilä which led to be ultimately acknowledged the best summer employee of the year in Finland by Oikotie. What’s the secret? 💡 Positive Attitude: Aside completing my assigned tasks, I use to ask colleagues if they need a helping hand so as to meet the team’s goal. This is something my manager and colleagues really appreciated. Further, aside developing my hard skills, I also focused on developing soft skills. 💡 Be resolute: I participated and contributed to the strategic initiatives of the organization as well as meeting and learning from new people from other teams. 💡 Show Gratitude: I always appreciated people who came my way, no matter how little I learnt from them. Thank you means a lot to people. 💡 Mentorship: I reach out to people in the company who I believed could help me with the right guidance and assistance to advance in your career. These tips were helpful to me and I believe can they can be helpful to summer trainees in succeeding in their roles. What tips would you like to give to trainees to succeed in their roles?

Strategies for Industrial Internship Programs for Undergraduates : UTP allocates 8 months for their Internship Programs ; whereby other Universities allocate between 2 - 6 months instead. How to choose your Internship Programs? (1) Ensure you apply it in advance of 6 months instead of last minutes struggle. Get your University approval letter much earlier. (2) Network with any HRM Officers from the Industries especially the ones that you're interested in. (3) If you aim to work with Oil & Gas Big Corporations upon graduation for instance, ensure you apply your Internship Program at those Industries only. (4) Allocate your budget for such program. Normally Oil & Gas Big Corporations provide allowances about RM 1000 per month for the Interns. In case you're from KL and your Internship will be at Petronas Plant in Kerteh, you have to spare your budget for accommodation and transportation as well. (5) During your Internship, you should network with as many Senior Professionals as you can. They might help you later on in getting a job. But if you're sort of introvert anti social, with silo mentality- lone wolf, nothing much I can say. You should network also with HRM Officers especially Recruiters there. (6) Your English must be fluent enough especially if you wanna attach with Oil & Gas Big Corporations such as Petronas, ExxonMobil, Shell, ConocoPhillips, Murphy Oil, BP, Schlumberger, Prefchem. All their business correspondences , meetings, presentations, procedures are in English. (7) During the Internship Program, besides executing your core tasks, you should involve yourself with any of company events, initiatives for visibility and recognition. (8) Your Internship Program must be strictly relevant to your Degree Program to be meaningful.

Congratulations to our Graduates who completed their university degrees during 2023. All our Graduates make a significant contribution towards Delta, taking the theoretical knowledge gained at university and applying it practically within the workplace. One of our latest graduates, Sophie, tells us about completing an internship with Delta: “In completing an internship with Delta Electricity whilst also finishing my degree, I was able to put into practice the theoretical knowledge I was gaining (and had gained) throughout the course of my studies. It also allowed me to gain valuable practical industrial experience to add to my professional resume. Some key benefits I found in completing the internship were the opportunities to combine both my theoretical and practical knowledge, developing a range of soft/hard skills and being able to learn as much as I can about environmental management in power station operations, something not well-covered in my degree”. Sophie. Congratulations to Sophie and all Graduates who completed their University Degrees in 2023! Learn more about our Graduate Development Program here;

As part of #nationalapprenticeshipweek, apprentices at Prysmian Group share their experience of launching a career in STEM and why they chose the apprenticeship pathway… "Coming from a non-STEM background, the leap into becoming a project engineer seemed daunting at first. However, with the support of Prysmian and my colleagues, it has been a thrilling adventure so far merging practical, hands-on learning with academic rigour. It's a blend that's both challenging and deeply fulfilling. What makes a degree apprenticeship stand out is the immersive experience. It's not just about theories and concepts; it's about applying them in real-world scenarios. This dynamic environment has been a game-changer, allowing me to grow skills and confidence daily." #STEMazing at Prysmian. Why we need incessant career coaching & mentoring for Professionals? (1) Upon enrolling in college, some Undergraduates may stumble into dilemma of pursuing the subject or switch to other field of study. They need to consult any Senior Professionals in deriving for the best decision. (2) During college years, the Undergraduates may have to decide where would be the ideal companies for their Internship Programs. So far the longest duration of Internship program is under UTP; whereby some of the Undergraduates may opt to embark their Internship at any of Petronas Plants for 8- month duration. That's appropriate for them to acquire knowledge and practical experiences and to broaden their network amongst the Senior Professionals. (3) Upon graduation, the Graduates need to consult again the Senior Professionals for interviewing for Protégé Programs or any of permanent positions in the Industries. (4) Upon getting the job, the Young Professionals need to consult the Senior Professionals for advices and guidances frequently. (5) Then the Young Professionals may struggle in closing technical gaps, passing any assessments, pursuing career path & progressions. (6) Later on the Professionals need to consult the Senior Professionals for guidances in pursuing any of their industrial certificates of competencies. (7) Without proper strategies, some Professionals may end up being complacent, demoralised, stressful. (8) Bear in mind that even certain GM, CEO and VP need mentors for their career enhancements and progressions. For further deliberations, let chill out over coffee sessions huh. Hahahahaha.

Always welcome the opportunity to pen an article for Tank Storage Association #Insight magazine, and as ever great support from Nunzia Florio and of course my friends CMA who are always on hand with sage advice. This article though has a deeper drive, we know we have a skills shortage that will only continue to impact our sector, that is why it is so important we look at routes to develop the next generation of Operator Technicians into the sector, underpinning this with the development of career pathways. Aligned to this is the importance of ensuring that those within the sector also have the opportunity to develop against the same level as those joining the sector, this will ensure that skills across a wide breadth of the industry not only keep pace with the energy transition, but also exceed the competence requirements! #bulkstorage #terminals #energytransition #skillsdevelopment #apprenticeships #careers
🗣️"As the world makes advances through the energy transition, we will need young, imaginative, ambitious and well-trained operators who are able to adapt to an ever-changing future of fuel." ✔️In the latest issue of #Insight magazine, Reynolds Training Services Ltd writes about 'Hiring an apprentice: can you afford not to?'
