“If you look at how our diet has changed in the last 30 years, there is much more variety and much more novelty. That continues to be a real driver for the food industry and the agri-food sector as a whole, so it would certainly make sense for our farmers and our agricultural sector to continue responding to that trend.” James Phillips BBSRC Following Agri-TechE’s successful event Novel Crops and Fresh Thinking, novel crops are still the talk of the town. Our Members BBSRC and NIAB were recently interviewed by Dan Saladino on BBC Radio 4's 'The Food Programme’, in an episode entitled A Food Rethink: Lessons from a Food Shortage. James Phillips considered the range of potential disruptions that threaten the reliable and secure supply of our food as well as possible solutions including broadening the types of crops we grow in the UK – from newer, more resilient varieties to completely ‘novel’ crops. In the mid 20th century oats were replaced by wheat. Could we be on the cusp on another shift... to chickpeas? NIAB’s Dr Phil Howell discussed his research in farming UK chickpeas - a legume that can be milled into a flour that can be used as an egg substitute as a binding agent.
