🙌 A new paper on one of my first marine conservation and sustainable fishing projects in Baja California, Mexico 🌊 Not only makes this me value how lucky I was to work with such talented colleagues and committed fisheries, but it also brings very relevant insights on how small-scale fisheries and coastal communities can improve their resilience in the face of climate change, political crisis and economic instability. Smart Fisheries Collaboration with WWF 🌏Client/Collaborators: WWF 📍 Location: United Kingdom 📅 Year: 2021 🔄 Project: Climate Smart Fisheries MarFishEco collaborated with WWF, RSPB, and MCS to summarize the latest scientific knowledge regarding blue carbon, fishing impacts and the potential role of the UK's fishing industry in addressing climate change. Here's a glimpse into the 2021 study’s vital insights: * Fisheries have a dual role in climate change. * The distribution and recruitment of some fish stocks are changing with a changing climate. *Carbon emissions from fishing, notably bottom trawling and burning fuel have climate impacts. Peter Auster from Mystic Aquarium provided valuable input to U.S. legislators who have introduced a new bill known as the SHIFT Act. If passed, the legislation would help modernize outdated regulations governing commercial fishing along the Atlantic Coast. This, in turn, would benefit local fishermen, the economy, and fish populations. “As the effects of climate change on marine species and ecosystems become more dramatic, we need to address how best to manage fisheries for sustainable use,” said Auster. “The SHIFT Act aims to manage fisheries by encouraging collaboration between federal and state management agencies. It proposes adjusting quotas based on changing distributions, minimizing wasted catch, and considering potential ecological impacts, such as changes in food webs and habitats, due to climate change.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/enKDAa-p

https://lnkd.in/dayqjq3W Puffins, porpoises, and pine martens are just some of the species set to benefit from new measures set out by the Government today (31 January) to boost nature recovery on land and at sea. The new plans - announced one year on from the launch of the Environmental Improvement Plan – will see a permanent closure of the sandeel fisheries in English waters of the North Sea from April, further targeted restrictions on damaging bottom trawling and a new framework for national parks and protected areas to help them better deliver for nature.

🐟 Fisheries are an integral part of the blue economy, providing a vital source of protein for more than 3 billion people. ❌ They are too big to fail but in all too many regions fisheries policy is failing with real world consequences. Scientists estimate that 845 million people worldwide are nutritionally vulnerable to a decline in fisheries. ✅ Fortunately, there are many examples that show we know how to get sustainable fisheries right. I’m grateful to have the honour of moderating a panel during the Our Ocean Conference Plenary on Promoting Sustainable Fisheries where I’ll be joined by global leaders to discuss what’s working and what is needed to protect and restore marine ecosystems for sustainable fisheries. 📅 Wednesday April 17, 2024, from 14:00 – 15:00 📍 Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Plenary Session VII See you there! Panelists: - H.E. Mr. Lefteris Avgenakis, Greek Minister of Rural Development and Food. - H.E. Steffi Lemke, Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection of the Federal Republic of Germany - Η.Ε. Kevin Brosseau, Associate Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans of Canada. - H.E. Carmen Ivelise Van Dunem do Sacramento Neto dos Santos, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources of the Republic of Angola - Mrs. Charlina Vitcheva, Director General, DG MARE, European Commission. - Mr. Esben Sverdup-Jensen, CEO at Danish Pelagic Producers Organisation (DPPO) and ICFA Board member #OceanAction #SDG14+ #Fisheries #OurOcean24 #OurOceanGreece #Ocean Our Ocean Greece World Economic Forum Friends of Ocean Action

There are times when policymakers wake up and do the right thing. This is one of them. 😀 "Permanent closure of the sandeel fisheries in English waters of the North Sea from April further targeted restrictions on damaging bottom trawling and a new framework for national parks and protected areas to help them better deliver for nature. If we are going to restore nature, this is where it starts: When we stop doing the things that will break it. Well done to all involved for making this happen. #naturerestoration #naturerecovery #biodiversity

🌊 Just read a fascinating article on the marine research priorities in New Zealand - such a crucial topic for our oceans and marine life! Here are some key takeaways that got me thinking: - Concerns about food sources from the ocean and the importance of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture practices. - The rising challenge of marine biosecurity with increasing marine pests and invasive species. - The critical need to address the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and species diversity. - The push for more marine reserves and protected areas to conserve marine habitats and species. - Exploring the vast biodiversity of New Zealand's marine environments and the need for conservation efforts. - The complexity of policy-making in marine management and the integration of science and decision-making. - Embracing marine guardianship and stewardship for future generations through citizen science and indigenous knowledge. - Understanding coastal and ocean processes to manage sedimentation and its ecological impacts. - Investigating anthropogenic factors like pollution, land-use effects, and marine debris on marine ecosystems. Your thoughts and feelings on this topic would be greatly appreciated! How do you envision addressing these marine research priorities in New Zealand? 🌊 https://lnkd.in/gzCJmPZn
