Urgent action is needed to protect marine biodiversity in the South Pacific! New Zealand remains the only country to deep-sea bottom trawl in the South Pacific threatening seamount ecosystems. At this South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (#SPRFMO) meeting, we urge members to unite to protect all seamounts. #ClimateChange is also leading to shifts in the distribution and abundance of fisheries, altering ecosystems, affecting livelihoods, destabilizing food systems and challenging economic security worldwide. The DSCC calls on SPRFMO to agree to: ❌ The closure of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (#VMEs) to #BottomTrawling 🎣 Sustainable management of fisheries across the Convention area 🌊 Implementing a precautionary approach on individual species and broader ecosystems, research and monitoring on the effects of climate change and the closure of fishing in vulnerable marine ecosystem areas. Leading Scientists Redefine ‘Sustainability’ to Save the Ocean and Feed a Hungry and Warming Planet Top ocean experts have published a report that redefines the concept of “sustainable fishing” and proposes 11 “golden rules” that radically challenge the flawed approach that currently prevails in fisheries management. Published a week before Brussels’ Ocean Week, and a few months before the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, the rules have been devised to put an end to the ongoing destruction of the oceans caused by fishing, and ensure the renewal of abundant fish populations to feed future generations. Climate impacts on Australian fisheries 🐟🔬🧪👨🔬👩🔬 Climate change is impacting Australia’s oceans with consequences for marine ecosystems and the fisheries they support. On average, Australian waters are getting warmer, more acidic, and more layered. Sea-levels are rising, major ocean currents are changing, and extreme weather events are becoming more severe. These changes are affecting the biological functions and productivity of Australia’s marine species. Because some species are more sensitive to the impacts of climate change than others, their responses to climate change also vary significantly. AFMA’s Climate Adaptation Program is integrating information on climate impacts on fisheries into our work to ensure that management of Commonwealth fisheries is adaptive and sustainable in a changing climate.
