Summer programs that expose students to careers in medicine are a great strategy to stimulate the interest of high school students towards a potential career as a physician. Additionally, participation in such a program as a high school student looks great on a resumé, makes the student a more attractive applicant to college, exposes them to mentors and establishes a network of potential sponsors who could support their development towards a career as a physician. Here is a list of 8 Pre-Med summer programs for high school students. While some programs’ application deadlines have already passed, there are several that are still accepting applications. If you know a high school student who is interested in becoming a physician or who you think would make a great physician, please pass this list along to them.

In the Medical Degree programme at Lunds universitet, students use Cochrane's educational materials and tools to better understand and interpret evidence-based medicine. Maria Björklund, who is one of the initiators, is a librarian and also teaches medical students:   –  The Medical Degree programme has been working very actively with a scientific approach, and we wanted to offer students a toolbox that supports those who want to learn about evidence-based medicine or produce systematic reviews themselves.   Since 2018, Cochrane Interactive Learning have been integrated into the Medical Degree programme, and now the effects are starting to show. More and more students want to write systematic reviews and engage in research.   –  We introduced the tools before the pandemic, and at that time, there was a lack of familiarity with digital learning tools. After the pandemic, I feel like there has been a shift, and now students expect digital learning modules and even digital examinations. It is also clear that the education has become more research-oriented, and that students can work together with both doctoral students and researchers on various projects. Research & Residency Match: Insights from UND Medical Students The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences Medical Research Student Interest Group met to talk about how research experiences factor into residency applications. We heard from four 4th years who recently matched into highly competitive residencies. They shared their experiences and insights, along with a discussion based on the research by Wolfson et al. (doi: 10.1097/ACM.0000000000005256). Here are some key takeaways for #medicalstudents considering research: - Boost your competitiveness: Research is especially valuable for applicants aiming for the most competitive residencies. - Be prepared to discuss your research: Residency interviews often ask about your research experiences. Be ready to talk about your project's significance or at least your research exposure. This is also a great opportunity to showcase valuable skills sought by program directors. - Every accomplishment counts: Don't underestimate the value of your research products. Published papers are fantastic, but poster presentations and even submitted manuscripts showcase your dedication and effort. - Start early! Research takes time: Beginning research early in medical school allows you to participate in multiple projects and have ample time for publication and presentations. - Align your interests, explore broadly: Align your research with your career goals, even if the type of research is outside of the area you hope to match in. At the beginning of my work at the UMCU, I was asked to help Meye Bloothooft and Marcel Van Der Heyden conducting an evaluation study of the Honours Program review project of the medical bachelor. Marcel had been teaching this course for 10 years and helped about 50 students to learn about the entire process of conducting a review study (including publishing). He was curious whether this course had helped former students in their studies and career. 31 alumni participated in this study, which we have now published in BMC Medical Education. Debunking Myths: The Challenges of Earning a PhD Degree Today, I want to shed light on a topic that often raises eyebrows – the comparison between earning a Ph.D. degree and a Doctoral Medical Degree (MD). Contrary to popular belief, both paths require unwavering dedication, resilience, and a profound commitment to lifelong learning. Each journey is unique, and the challenges faced by aspiring PhDs and future medical practitioners are indeed distinct, yet equally demanding. Pursuing a PhD involves in-depth research, critical analysis, and contributing original knowledge to your field. The road to a doctorate often includes countless hours in the lab, meticulous data collection, and the crafting of a dissertation that stands as a testament to your expertise. It's a marathon of intellectual pursuit that requires persistence and intellectual agility. On the other hand, earning a Doctoral Medical Degree entails a rigorous curriculum of medical courses, hands-on clinical experiences, and the responsibility of making life-changing decisions for patients. Medical students spend years mastering the art and science of healing, ultimately leading to internships and residencies that demand unwavering dedication. So, are the challenges comparable? In some ways, yes. Both paths require a deep passion for their respective fields, a commitment to excellence, and a willingness to push boundaries. "For a medical student with nascent research skills and a full-time core curriculum, a goal of 25 publications and presentations in the 3 years between matriculation and residency application is clearly untenable -- and frankly impossible." [quoted from the article] This is an insightful read. I've been saying it for years. This is happening not just in the US but across the globe -- including Low Middle Income Countries where young doctors-to-be are hell bent on propping their CVs with numbers/quantity (of research papers) without paying much heed to the quality of the work nor on developing a theme to it.
