An executive coach and consultant who collaborates with clients to develop their strategies and articulate their unique value.
My heart wrenched as I watched this video. It was a hard video to watch, especially when Andrew answered the question: Do you want to die at home or in a hospice?" A powerful reminder of hospices' vital work in providing compassionate care during difficult times. I asked myself what was it like for Andrew to make that video. In those first few seconds, you could see a change in his expression as he answered, realising that whatever brought him to St Francis Hospice - who are very good, by the way - his situation was undeniably real. It's a tough place to be. Watching this video made me reflect on how often we are encouraged to be grateful for even the slightest things. While this is a good practice, I invite you to take this further. Consider this: Are you noticing what you are constantly thinking about? Are you replaying past situations, incidents or comments that hurt you? Do you continue to relive it? Because stress is widely recognised as a significant factor contributing to many illnesses. Notice what you are thinking about and ask yourself if those thoughts are serving you to live a happier life. Is it worth it? As morbid as it sounds, the Stoics had a phrase worth remembering: memento mori—remember you will die - as a profound reminder of our mortality and the impermanence of life. I repeat it to myself whenever I notice I'm making a big deal out of nothing. Make the most of your week ahead.
We've been privileged to speak to Andrew, one of the individuals we're currently caring for, and we've been blown away by his honesty and his love and support for the hospice. In this video, Andrew talks about what his hopes for the hospice are. Thank you Andrew for being so candid and for sharing your time with us 🧡 If you also want to read Andrew's story 📖 we've shared it on our website https://lnkd.in/e5J5HDYZ #40thAnniversary

Have you heard about…Lilies of the Valley? They re-purpose is flowers from weddings, parties, and events, extending the impact beyond that single moment. A team of dedicated volunteers carefully arranged repurpose flowers into beautiful bouquets for those most in need. What patient wouldn’t want to receive a beautiful bouquet What a wonderful initiative! The concept of Lilies of the Valley is truly heartwarming and selfless. By repurposing flowers from weddings, parties, and events, the team of volunteers is able to bring joy and comfort to patients in hospitals and nursing homes. The gesture is not only a thoughtful way to reuse flowers but also a way to extend the emotional impact of those special occasions beyond the initial event. The idea of presenting beautiful bouquets to patients in hospitals and nursing homes is particularly touching. It's easy to imagine the smiles on their faces when they receive such a lovely gift, especially during times when they may be feeling under the weather or in need of some cheer. The bouquet becomes a symbol of kindness, compassion, and care, reminding them that they are not alone and that someone is thinking of them. Moreover, the act of giving flowers has been shown to have a positive impact on mental and emotional well-being. Studies have found that receiving flowers can boost mood, reduce stress, and even alleviate symptoms of depression. In a hospital or nursing home setting, where patients may be experiencing physical discomfort or emotional distress, the gift of flowers can be especially meaningful. It's clear that the Lilies of the Valley initiative is more than just a creative way to reuse flowers; it's a demonstration of community spirit, compassion, and humanity. The team of volunteers behind this project are truly making a difference in the lives of others, one bouquet at a time. I attended the Keech Hospice Care Compassionate Neighbours workshop, an engaging reflection of what we can further do to support one another. ⚫ Being a compassionate neighbour for Keech Hospice Care means offering support, kindness, and understanding to those facing life-limiting illnesses. ⚫ It involves small acts of kindness, offering a listening ear, or assisting with daily tasks small things that we may take for granted however make a massive impact! ⚫ Showing empathy and presence can provide comfort and alleviate feelings of isolation for patients and their loved ones which can be a common factor. Ultimately creating a caring environment, contributing to a network of support that goes beyond the hospice encouraging a true spirit of community care.

Press Release** March 24, 2024 https://lnkd.in/diMV2uc6 February 24, 2024 – On Sunday, March 24, 2024, more than 50 residents of Memphis, TN, will gather to discuss the importance of determining and sharing one’s wishes for care through the end of life and beyond at the inaugural event, "End of Life Planning: What's the big deal anyway?". The event, held from 4:00-7:00 pm at 3681 Cherry Rd., is hosted by Empower Me!, a local non-profit and proud champion of The Conversation Project. Since 2012, The Conversation Project (TCP), an initiative of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), has been inspiring conversations about care through the end of life within homes and communities, garnering support on national, state, and local levels. At the heart of The Conversation Project is its Conversation Starter Guide, a free, downloadable, step-by-step guide developed to help individuals and those who matter most start conversations about care wishes now and through the end of life. TCP also offers free tools for how to choose a healthcare proxy, how to be a healthcare proxy, how to talk with a healthcare team, and guides for caregivers of seriously ill children or people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The Conversation Project’s Conversation Starter Guide was co-created with individuals from diverse backgrounds (race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, religions, etc.), including those who have experience with a serious illness or who have gone through the end of life with a friend or family member (adult or child/teen). The Guide has been downloaded more than 550,000 times by individuals from all 50 states and 160+ countries, and it's currently available in multiple languages. The Conversation Guide has received support from individuals, healthcare providers, health plans, and employers as a simple and effective tool to normalize the conversation and guide the process. We have partnered with local attorneys, The Shelby County Probate Office (to discuss the probate process), Shelby County Clerk's office (Business property and Vehicle transfer of property). This will be a series of events to help facilitate through an end-of-life planning journal to assist residents to be prepared in their final days. "This is a hard conversation to have, but a critical conversation not to have," says Stephanie Gatewood, Founder, and CEO of Empower Me!, a local non-profit whose mission is to Empower Citizens through Education, Engagement, and providing community resources to members of the community who are at greatest risk. “We are grateful for the support of organizations like Empower Me! that help us share and spread this important message and work nationwide via intimate community settings,” says Kate DeBartolo, Senior Director of TCP. “We can’t plan for everything. But we can talk about what is most important — in our life, and in our healthcare — with those who matter

This article provides great insights into the type of work our team in #Michigan is working on and the challenges/solutions in improving the quality of life and care for nursing home residents. In fact, our Coalition works with the entire program mentioned in the article - the Michigan Longterm Care Ombudsman Program – comprehensively at the state level. 🌟 Shout out to Salli Pung and Alison Hirschel – both mentioned in the article. The article... 👉 Starts out with a story of justice for a grandmother who found love later in life – a story that provides context how important personal preferences and rights are for our aging family members. 👉 Examples the type of work and advocating #ombudsman, volunteers and other staff members do to support individuals living in #nursinghomes. 👉 Is part of a series, "State of Health," funded by Michigan Health Endowment Fund, who also funds our Michigan team work developing leaders. Such great work and #changeleaders in Michigan who are working together to ensure nursing home residents continue to live their best lives. 🌟 To Read the Article: https://lnkd.in/enBhVcfd #movingforward #eldercare #longtercare #seniorliving #aging #olderadults #change
