Excited to share that today at COP28 ReFED is releasing a new global philanthropic roadmap to guide more investment into reducing food loss and waste. The roadmap outlines $300M in ready-to-fund philanthropic investments that will help transform failing food systems and deliver major climate, economic, and environmental gains. The original US Roadmap was published in 2016 with the intent to create awareness about food waste and identify solutions. We are so proud that this Global Roadmap is now available for this global solvable problem. "The costs of climate and biodiversity crises, food insecurity, and inequality are already being paid for by governments, taxpayers, and the most vulnerable. Philanthropy can send a potent signal about the need for change,” according to The Rockefeller Foundation's Sara Farley. To head in this direction, a coalition of 24 philanthropic foundations are urging philanthropists, corporations, and governments to scale up their spending on climate-related changes to global food systems by more than $200 billion annually to achieve the global goal of significantly reducing fossil fuel use by 2050. So many announcements already coming out of #cop28 about #foodsystemstransformation but this is one that can lead to big changes in our philanthropic capital flows to repurposing public subsidies (#olicychange), getting money into the hands of the tens of thousands of small and medium sized farmers so they can rebuild soil quality and produce food using more regenerative methods (#grants & #financing), helping build and grow demand for regenerative & net zero products (#consumers) and holding companies accountable for their #ESG targets (#shareholderactivism activism and #corporateengagement). These things will all help us address the true cost of our #globalfoodsystem. 🌍🌿 In this decisive decade, the way we grow, consume and package our food cannot be ignored or siloed in an all-hands-on-deck effort to meet our climate and biodiversity goals. 👨🏿🌾👩🏽🌾 From East Africa to the Andes and across the globe, support for Indigenous and agroecological approaches is vital to sustain the important contributions made by smallholder farmers in building thriving and sustainable local and regional food economies while protecting biodiversity and growing resilience in the face of climate change. By embracing agroecology, communities have better control over the food they produce to future-proof their livelihoods and to make decisions to strengthen food sovereignty based on locally-tested solutions and knowledge. 💲📈 It’s a race against time and we urgently need to see the money—in the tens of billions of dollars—move towards real solutions, particularly where policies are ready to be turned into action. The exciting new resource, "Reducing Food Loss & Waste - A Roadmap for Philanthropy" details $300M in ready-to-fund philanthropic investments for tackling food loss and waste. With case studies across Brazil, China, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa, and the U.S. the report shows how funders, and the public and private sector can take a big bite out of emissions while improving food security, nutrition, incomes, and the environment.  Nearly 50 expert organizations contributed to this roadmap, which was led by the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU), ReFED, WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), and the World Resources Institute (WRI) and funded by the Bezos Earth Fund, the Betsy and Jesse Fink Family Foundation, the IKEA Foundation, and the Robertson Foundation. We call on the greater climate philanthropy community to seize this moment and dramatically increase funding of grassroots movements whose work is rooted in research and learning processes that result in effective solutions for local contexts.
