Hugely important scientific output! https://lnkd.in/d_mreEE2   This compelling report, published today by the OWEC #PrePAREDproject consortium and led by the University of Aberdeen, represents timely and much-needed evidence with respect to reducing conservatism and addressing uncertainty in the Effective Deterrence Ranges used in harbour porpoise assessments for #offshorewind projects in the Southern North Sea.   Using the unique experimental design implemented for marine mammal construction monitoring of the Moray Firth wind farms, this research demonstrates that the porpoise deterrence effect of impact piling of monopiles at Moray West wind farm extends to 9.4 km, less than half the current EDR. This means that the area experiencing the disturbance effect from installing monopiles is *85% smaller* (when using an EDR of 10 km, rather than the currently-recommended 26 km).   If this evidence can be swiftly adopted by the Marine Management Organisation and nature conservation bodies (Natural England / JNCC), this could tangibly reduce conservatism in individual project and cumulative assessments, facilitating or accelerating the consenting and permitting of offshore wind farms in/near the Southern North Sea SAC. Today's announcement by BOEM of the proposed lease sites up for auction in the Gulf of Maine shows the reality that development in the Gulf is more likely to secure power offtake with Massachusetts than Maine. There's been so much talk in the state of Maine about offshore wind, and controversy over whether Sears Island is the right place for a marshalling port. But there hasn't been nearly as much talk or action to create an effective power procurement program with near-term incentives. Developers can walk, not run, towards Maine's target of 3 GW by 2040. By then marshalling ports for floating wind will be established outside of Maine. https://lnkd.in/e27WRsqX

"Ørsted is treating Block Island very differently than other communities its projects will impact. For example, Ørsted committed $170 million to Brookhaven, New York and $29 million to the Town of East Hampton to mitigate the temporary negative impacts of burying a power cable. By contrast Ørsted and BOEM offered the Town virtually nothing except a hodgepodge of nonsensical mitigation measures, such as weed-whacking the Lighthouse parking lot. Indeed, the paltry mitigation offered for the adverse effects of hundreds of turbines falls significantly short of the modest mitigation provided to the Island for the construction of just five turbines that comprise the Block Island Wind Farm." https://lnkd.in/ehV9cUb6

World Engineering day is today and has a focus on sustainability, so lets talk about windfarms. Windfarms are an excellent example of amazing engineering. I have choosen to purchase part of a wind farm to be sustainable and help with energy costs! Some fun facts about windfarms 💨 An average turbine blade is about 200 ft long 💨 Offshore wind speeds tend to be faster and more consistent than on land 💨 The wind energy sector can generate employment for four million people globally by 2030. 📢 We’re pleased to announce EDF Business Solutions and EDF Renewables UK & Ireland have signed two Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (#CPPAs) with Tesco, the UK's largest supermarket chain and BAE Systems, provider of some of the world’s most advanced defence, aerospace and security solutions. Tesco and BAE Systems are two of three offtakers, who will buy the entire generation of EDF Renewable UK's 102MW Stranoch wind farm, located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The commitment from these corporate buyers allowed for a positive investment decision in the wind farm, enabling the construction of additional renewable generation to the UK. This marks a key milestone in accelerating Scotland’s journey to a Net Zero future, with the wind farm due to become operational in late 2026.
