This case study is an excellent example of real change that occurs when investors and entrepreneurs are aligned and committed to advancing gender equality. Together with Soléco Energy and the support of IDB Invest, IDB Lab, Keidos, and Nuance Security & Solar Systems Limited, we: - Trained 19 women in Jamaica on solar panel assembly and installation - Developed a sexual harassment policy tailored to the renewable energy sector and applicable to contractors to elevate the issue across the value chain, including via a clause in the EPC contract requiring explicit compliance to the policy - Developed a community engagement strategy and action plan to directly advance foster women’s employment, leadership, and inclusion in the region This sector has a long way to go. Women comprise a mere one third of the renewable energy workforce worldwide (primarily in administrative roles), hold less than 11% of leadership roles, and represent less than 4% of CEOs. These figures are alarming considering the clear benefits that women's inclusion and empowerment bring for the bottom line. This project provides an example of how we can all tackle this sector-wide phenomenon with concrete initiatives!
Deetken Impact Sustainable Energy (DISE) investee SOLÉCO ENERGY is an innovative, woman-led business driving an equitable renewable energy transition in the Caribbean by fostering women’s employment, leadership, and inclusion across the value chain of solar PV distributed generation projects. Driven by an innovative investment contract with IDB Invest featuring ambitious interest rate-linked gender milestones, and supported by the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program in Low Income Countries (SREP) administered by the IDB Lab, the DISE team provided hands-on technical assistance over the course of a year to directly support the team in achieving those gender milestones and enhance gender business practices in current and future projects. Soléco Energy provides the sector with an example of how to directly advance gender equity not only within its own company and owners but also with contractors, local communities of influence, and the sector at large. Embracing #Equity & #Inclusion in Energy! Last week, the 'A Just Energy Transition' event unfolded at New York University Abu Dhabi during ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference, rooted in AccessWIE's mission to advance gender equality in the #energy sector. Diverse perspectives, including speakers like Fatima Al Nuaimi, Proscovia Nabbanja, Rasha Hasaneen, Marc de Saint Gerand, & Antonios Vouloudis, fueled discussions on #energytransition, #funding, and the global South perspective. From #LNG's role to #Uganda's oil ambitions, and the importance of technology, these conversations highlighted key pathways towards a more equitable and #sustainable energy sector. Here's one of the inspiring women working in renewables that I want to mention today: Michelle Campbell-Robson is an Environmental Manager and responsible for monitoring the ecology of our operational renewables sites. She's an inspirational woman because she's passionate about what she does – and working in a sector where she's part of the solution to climate crisis. I particularly love what she has to say about diversity and inclusion in this article from Connect, EDF (UK)'s internal people magazine: “We need all types of people in our industry as there’s all types of challenges." Indeed an interesting article underlining the importance of including all human beings to join renewable energy companies and be part of the energy transition as a whole. We need everyone for this undertaking! And Finnish and Norwegian companies seem to be ahead in this regard. Why not learning from them…
💯 Are you curious about the role and impact of women in the German wind industry? 👩💼 Read this article from Tilman Eicke in the German Wind Power Magazine, where you can hear from four “Women of Windpower” who are working in different areas of the wind sector: Finja Neumann, Nelly Kirsch, Hanne May and Anne Scheibe. 🚀 You will also discover what companies can do to make the wind industry more inclusive and diverse. 2moGreat to see ArcVera highlighting the importance of gender diversity. I noticed though that your leadership team currently consists of 11 men and zero women. What initiatives are in place to enhance gender diversity at your leadership level?
