Is Boeing Falling Behind in the Hydrogen Race? Why Its Latest Comments Raise Concerns About Innovation and Progress in Sustainable Aviation Boeing executives recently, at Farnborough Airshow, cast doubt on the viability of hydrogen as an aviation fuel, citing safety and sustainability concerns at the Farnborough Airshow. Todd Citron Boeing’s Chief Technology Officer, raised issues around hydrogen’s flammability, while Chief Sustainability Officer Brian Moran pointed out that most hydrogen isn’t yet green. But is this more about genuine challenges—or is Boeing using the media to slow down the momentum of hydrogen aviation because they’re not equipped to lead the charge? Airbus is forging ahead with their #ZeroE hydrogen fuel cell program, addressing safety, scalability, and sustainability, demonstrating that these challenges can be overcome. The Aviation Impact Accelerator (AIA) at the University of Cambridge has made it clear that Moonshot innovations, like hydrogen-powered flight, are essential to achieving our decarbonisation targets. Is Boeing’s hesitance an attempt to question safety and sustainability in order to buy time? With the world moving fast towards hydrogen solutions, the industry needs innovators—not companies throwing roadblocks. It’s time for Boeing to step up, or risk being left behind in the race for a sustainable aviation future. Civil Aviation Authority have a Hydrogen Sandbox with ZeroAvia and Cranfield Aerospace Solutions, EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency are working with MTU Aero Engines and Airbus and Federal Aviation Administration are working with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration to all make sure there is a compliance to regulations in CS-25 and Hydrogen Safety is being tackled in the Aviation System with Bristol Airport and easyJet making open their Project Acorn study. On Hydrogen leakage this is key and we are all seeing sealing and storage without leaking as a technical and economic need to solve as the Oil and Gas industry have already done. #HydrogenAviation #Hydrogen #MoonshotThinking #SustainableAviation #InnovationNotDelay #AirbusZeroE #AviationImpactAccelerator #FutureOfFlight #ClimateChangeSolutions

I am saddened to see that it seems to be the end of the road for Universal Hydrogen and their plans for retrofit hydrogen powered aircraft. I personally believe that sustainability is the predominant challenge in our industry at this time, and am therefore surprised by the amount of money which flows to eVTOL development, which will have negligible impact on reducing global aviation emissions, while projects like this struggle. While regional hydrogen aircraft like this might not be hugely impactful reducing emissions in their own right, they have the potential to be an invaluable stepping stone in maturing hydrogen aircraft technology and building necessary infrastructure. It is great that here in the UK, the Aerospace Technology Institute is supporting projects from ZeroAvia Cranfield Aerospace Solutions working on similar hydrogen retrofit projects, as well as other hydrogen technologies and projects. #sustainableaviation #hydrogeninaviation https://lnkd.in/ejY3bEeS
