The event brought together ministers and high-level representatives of key organizations in an effort to spur the decarbonization and resilience of the buildings sector. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦: ◾️ It's crucial to perceive buildings not merely as physical structures but as vital elements within our expansive energy ecosystems. ◾️ We must begin assigning a tangible value to resilience and the benefits it brings to our communities and economies. ◾️ Ensuring the transition to low-carbon solutions is inclusive and accessible to everyone will be key.

💬 On a global scale, approximately one-third of all emissions related to buildings come from embodied carbon, contributing to around 1️⃣0️⃣% of the total green-house gas emissions caused by energy use worldwide. This was a key focus at the inaugural UN Environment Programme Buildings and Climate Global Forum, which convened over 1,000 participants to tackle the pressing issue of decarbonizing the built environment. 🏗 With buildings being responsible for 34% of global energy demand and 37% of energy-related GHG emissions, they play a major role in tackling the climate crisis. How can you tackle a crisis without understanding its full extent? Stakeholders in the sector—including governments, institutions, and industry professionals—need to know how GHG emissions unfold throughout the buildings' lifecycle. This understanding fosters transformative and effective emissions reduction strategies. Starting today, this year's Sharm el-Sheikh Mitigation Work Programme Dialogue (May 27-29, Bonn) will focus on 'Cities: buildings and urban systems', highlighting the building sector’s potential for enhancing climate ambition. PEEB collaborated with UN Climate Change and BPIE - Buildings Performance Institute Europe to produce the UNFCCC Buildings Monitoring Compendium. Its resources remain as relevant as ever: ambition to act on buildings is growing globally, following initiatives like the Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge, the Déclaration de Chaillot, and the Buildings Breakthrough. With delays in grid decarbonisation, spiraling utility and material costs and subsequent lack of available funding to prepare for degasification of the public sector estate - missing the national targets was always a likely outcome.
