🏗 With buildings being responsible for 34% of global energy demand and 37% of energy-related GHG emissions, they play a major role in tackling the climate crisis. How can you tackle a crisis without understanding its full extent? Stakeholders in the sector—including governments, institutions, and industry professionals—need to know how GHG emissions unfold throughout the buildings' lifecycle. This understanding fosters transformative and effective emissions reduction strategies. Starting today, this year's Sharm el-Sheikh Mitigation Work Programme Dialogue (May 27-29, Bonn) will focus on 'Cities: buildings and urban systems', highlighting the building sector’s potential for enhancing climate ambition. PEEB collaborated with UN Climate Change and BPIE - Buildings Performance Institute Europe to produce the UNFCCC Buildings Monitoring Compendium. Its resources remain as relevant as ever: ambition to act on buildings is growing globally, following initiatives like the Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge, the Déclaration de Chaillot, and the Buildings Breakthrough. This topic will also be discussed during the upcoming Bonn Climate Conference, June 3-13. Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are a key tool for climate action on buildings. What is included in the NDCs on buildings? Buildings are rising in the climate agenda: the Sharm el-Sheikh Mitigation Work Programme will discuss "Cities: buildings and urban systems" from May 27 to 29 in Bonn. They will also feature in the Bonn Climate Change Conference, June 3-13. The momentum follows the Buildings Breakthrough, the Chaillot Declaration, and the COP28 Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge. NDCs already reflect this agenda: 87% - 168 of 194 countries – have targets on buildings. These targets range from building design to energy efficiency, cooking, or appliances. Building materials are increasingly covered in NDCs: over one in three NDCs analysed include measures on them. Yet, quantitative greenhouse GHG reduction targets are rare, and so is mention of the financing needed to achieve them. Going forward, the next generation of NDCs must include more ambitious, quantifiable, and finance-ready measures on buildings. This requires collaboration. The tools we used are available for further research and policy work. It was a pleasure to work with the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) alongside Alistair Thomas on their Embodied Carbon Modelling and Reporting guidance released at the end of last year. Thanks to Alex Benstead and Clare Wilde for their tireless efforts getting it across the line! The built environment plays a major role in carbon emissions, with embodied carbon from building materials being a significant contributor to the climate crisis. Achieving consistency in the scope and reporting of embodied carbon data across the industry is essential to accurately assess its impact and develop effective reduction strategies. This article highlights some great initiatives Buro Happold are involved in, including the UKGBC guidance alongside work with SE2050, MEP2040, ConcreteZero & SteelZero. These resources will be crucial for businesses to make informed decisions regarding construction materials and their environmental impact. #sustainability #construction

🏗 🔄 GHG emissions occur throughout the building lifecycle. Therefore, strategies to decarbonize the buildings sector need to bring stakeholders across the buildings supply chain together. 📊 Thanks to its multi-player approach, the UN Climate Change Buildings monitoring compendium offers a valuable resource for discussion on GHG emissions monitoring. Partners PEEB, UN Climate Change and BPIE - Buildings Performance Institute Europe conceived it as a practical document: it includes tools and methodologies to monitor and quantify emissions. This year's dialogue of the Sharm el-Sheikh Mitigation Work Programme, May 27-29 in Bonn, offered an opportunity for those stakeholders to exchange on challenges and best practices related to cities, buildings and urban systems. PEEB's Anna Zinecker had the opportunity to moderate an exchange about the #embodiedcarbon aspect of the buildings lifecycle. The topic will also be on the agenda for the Bonn Climate Change Conference, June 3-13. Find out more about how monitoring can support effective climate action in the sector in our compendium. 👓 Read the publication: https://lnkd.in/ep4t85WV 📺 Watch the exchange at the third Sharm El-Sheikh Mitigation Work Programme: https://lnkd.in/e7G_iP83 #buildforclimate #greenbuildings #sustainablebuildings #cliamateaction Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) Agence Française de Développement Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Ministère Écologie Territoires Marlan Pillay Joseph Mwiti Marangu Anne Holsten Lola Vallejo Amr Osama Abdel-Aziz Bernd Hackmann UN Climate Change
