🌍 PEEB took center stage at #WUF12!   Audrey Guiral-Naepels, Head of AFD’s Urban Development Division, and Thomas de Vericourt, AFD Urban Task Team Leader, presented PEEB’s contributions to building sustainable, zero-emission cities.   💬 Audrey Guiral-Naepels shared: “PEEB targets transformative projects with high mitigation and climate adaptation potential. This includes residential housing, hospitals, schools, commercial spaces, and existing buildings where upgrades are feasible.”   💬 Thomas de Véricourt emphasized the critical link between finance and sustainable urban growth, stating, “The financial sector is central to achieving the 2024 Chaillot Declaration targets, particularly in decarbonizing buildings. 🌍 Successful mission in Córdoba, Santa Fe, and Buenos Aires 🤝 🏙️ From October 7 to 17, colleagues from the GIZ and AFD’s PEEB Cool Program team visited the provinces of Córdoba, Buenos Aires, and Santa Fe to identify and prioritize energy efficiency projects across hospitals, schools, universities, and other key facilities. The mission focused on evaluating practical initiatives that enhance energy efficiency, reduce consumption, and improve thermal comfort for the users and staff of these buildings. Through this collaboration, PEEB Cool will provide technical assistance to advance the selected projects, empowering local teams to prepare impactful, sustainable solutions and creating the conditions to upscale the initiatives, replicate experiences and generate knowledge to accelerate the implementation of EE projects in the buildings sector. #WorldCitiesDay 🏢 Cities across ASEAN are growing at a rapid pace, driving development but also contributing to rising energy consumption. As urban populations increase, the demand for energy in buildings, especially cooling, continues to soar. Without action, this trend will significantly strain energy resources and exacerbate climate challenges.   What's the solution? PEEB ASEAN is stepping in to help cities transition toward energy-efficient, sustainable buildings. Energy Efficiency in Buildings 🏢 Key Insights from the International Energy Agency (IEA) World Energy Outlook 2024 Buildings are a key driver of energy demand: they are responsible 30% of global energy consumption, driven by the need for appliances, heating, and cooling. This trend is set to intensify:   🔹 In 2023, floor space in buildings increased by 40,000 km², enough to cover the entirety of the Netherlands. 🔹 Demand for space cooling in emerging markets and developing economies is set to rise rapidly, expected to double by 2050.   🔹 Driven by rising incomes, a growing population, and a warming climate, cooling needs will account for around 14% of total energy demand in buildings by 2050, up from below 7% today This steep rise in energy consumption has potentially disastrous consequences for climate. But solutions exist, and they must be harnessed:   🔹 Deployment of high-efficiency heating and cooling systems could reduce energy use in buildings by up to 25%.   🔹 Implementation of stricter building codes and standards could lead to a 10-15% reduction in energy consumption in the building sector by 2030. 🔹 Translating into policy the new initiatives to improve energy efficiency and resilience in Buildings, the Buildings Breakthrough and the Chaillot declaration, can significantly reduce the estimated increase in energy demand from cooling 🚀 PEEB plays a key role in harnessing these solutions: through the PEEB Cool programme, we promote the transformation of pledges into policies that are ready for action across the globe 🔎 Visualizing the issue: The graph below shows the impact potential of policies for energy efficiency in countering upward trends: in the current pledges scenario, energy demand increase by 2050 is limited, in comparison to the STEPS or business-as-usual scenario. 💡 Want to know how current Nationally Determined Contributions are tackling Energy Efficiency and Resilience in buildings? 🌱 Decarbonisation of buildings: sharing lessons from the Ground 🌱 💪 Liliana Campos-Arriaga will share experiences from PEEB's past work in Mexico in this online event organised by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in partnership ICLEI (as part of Daring Cities). Topics will include: 🤝 Collaboration strategies and multi-actor alliances 💵 Mobilisation of funding for sustainable buildings and construction 🌐 🛠 Global initiatives with on-the-ground action 🆕 The session is also an opportunity to get to know the Subnationals Action Group of Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC).
