Who doesn't love festivals? Well, actually, quite a lot of people! But we certainly do, and what we enjoy even more is creating these vibrant spaces in which people can unite and celebrate. Here are some of our most iconic projects to date: 1. Brixton Roof Top: In collaboration with our partners, we transformed a multi-story car park in Brixton into a 1000-person capacity pop-up event space. During summer, it became Brixton Beach, a Miami-themed beach party haven. In winter, it morphed into the North Pole Saloon, an alpine forest refuge. Not bad for a concrete block in the city! 🌴❄️ 2. The Danish Quarter with Live Nation and Carlsberg: We designed, built, and delivered ‘The Danish Quarter’ for Carlsberg. This standout activation not only wowed festival-goers but also contributed to the community. The wood from this project was repurposed for local school projects and even a kids' treehouse at a local nursery! 🍻 3. The Pepsi Tower: Now in its fourth year, this iconic stage has been a staple at Wireless Festival, Leeds Festival, and Reading Festival. This epic structure is built with sustainability in mind, reusing materials each year. Keep an eye out for it at Summer 2024 festivals! 🌟 4. Complex Acquires Family Style Food Festival Complex has acquired the festival Family Style, an annual festival in LA that combines food with street culture, fashion and music. This adds a new entertainment asset to the broader Complex media empire. Complex has been expanding both horizontally and vertically - when the media company was acquired by NTWRK earlier this year, that basically mashed together a street culture media publication with a street culture live commerce platform. NTWRK added a new layer of commerce to drive revenue for the broader group. Complex now has Family Style to supplement their flagship live event ComplexCon. First We Feast has been one of the most successful Complex sub-brands, spawning the hugely popular content format of interviewing celebrities while eating hot wings and also launching their own hot sauce brand. The addition of Family Style tops off Complex's "food vertical" - they create First We Feast interview content that is shared across digital media channels. They create a physical hot sauce brand to sell to their fans and they now curate a live physical event called Family Style to bring together the culture, content, community and commerce. They could replicate the same formula for their other "verticals" like fashion, hip hop, and lifestyle. As reported last week, the NZIFF Whānau Mārama: New Zealand has been scaled back in 2024 and is currently confirmed for just Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. While this is not an ideal outcome for those of us outside these regions, it's an unfortunate sign of the times. Cinema and the Arts, in general, have faced an uphill battle since Covid-19, with many cinemas seeing an average net loss of 20% in gross revenue since the heady days of 2017/18 &19. The festival itself has seen significant declines in revenue due to the loss of key sponsors and runs on limited grant funding. As a not-for-profit trust, it has had to cut its cloth, but losing a key event like this for the cinemas that screen this content can be the difference between keeping the lights on and closing up for good. The festival brings additional economic benefits that spreads beyond the walls of the cinemas and out to the local communities and across industries such as accommodation providers, hospitality venues, transportation providers, and tourism operators. Some have taken the announcement of the loss of the festival as an opportunity to put the boot in or play politics, but now is not the time for finger-pointing but a time for positive action. As an owner of one of the locations outside the main four centers that host the festival, we have contacted the NZIFF and pledged our support to assist where we can in an effort to open the door to the festival locations being widened to some additional larger rural locations around NZ. We will be putting our money where our mouths are and working with key partners in our local community in an effort to create a positive grassroots campaign that not only supports the NZIFF in 2024 but hopefully in the years to come. This is not to say we will be successful, but we are hopeful, and once we have sorted the details, I will share them here should others wish to join us in this endeavor.

A really important note from our founders, Dan Brain & Ian Houghton, on the huge changes we are making to MAD//FEST LONDON 2024 to ensure any bumps in the roads we had at this years festival are completely eradicated. Here's a snippet of the changes, but full details are in the article. We’re getting a bigger boat! Don’t worry, we’re not planning some kind of cruise ship experience down the Thames. We'll be back at The Old Truman Brewery in 2024. But there’s a twist… We are taking a much larger space to create a connected festival experience across the Old Truman Brewery site. In addition to the footprint you saw in 2023, we’re expanding the festival by adding Dray Walk (where the Big Chill Bar is!) to the floor plan and building a brand new stadium-style simultaneous main stage in Ely's Yard and taking over JuJu's. Simultaneous Hexagon Stages That’s right, MAD//Fest London 2024 will feature dual main stages that will bring together the industry’s most exciting brands, disruptors, celebrity entrepreneurs and agency bigwigs to create an innovative hybrid experience across two massive theatres. Central registration area The additional space we’ve acquired for the first time gives us the opportunity to create a central registration area where we can get you badged-up and into the show much faster. The space means we can triple the number of self service printers. This means no more bottlenecks getting into the show and vastly reduced queues. Day tickets In 2024, we’ll be asking attendees to register for individual days and re-confirm their place. This will mean we can more accurately manage daily attendance across the three days whilst ensuring the festival is accessible to as many industry leaders as possible. More food vendors, food/drink partnerships and digital tokens When you’re serving up on-the-house food and drink from brands of the calibre of Dishoom, Sticks ‘N’ Sushi and Heineken, it’s always going to be popular. But the new enlarged footprint of the show means that we can add several new service points where you can get food or your favourite tipple fast. New stages, bigger capacities, more topical conversations Including the aforementioned simultaneous Hexagon Stages, MAD//Fest 2024 will feature 9 (yes 9!) topical stages for you to immerse yourself in the most relevant content to your role and interests. From the creator economy, AI and emerging tech to creativity, attention and digital advertising, we’ve got the hot issues covered And relax…more spaces for you to take a breather MAD//Fest will always be a busy, vibey show (it’s a festival rather than a boring conference!) But one thing we’re able to do with the new space is to create more spaces where you can take a break, catch up on a few emails, and sit down somewhere comfortable for a relaxed conversation away from all the hubbub. Earlier this month at Eurosonic Noorderslag (ESNS), festival chiefs identified some of the key issues facing the festival sector today. 🌍 Supply chain issues “We have to invest and pay much more for the stuff that’s coming in. And that translates to ticket prices that are rising faster than inflation, which is already high – that’s what is the most worrying issue for me.” Eric Van Eerdenburg(Lowlands) 💰 Cost of living “The cost of hotels for the audience was maybe €100 per night, so for three nights practically, accommodation was ridiculous, which in the long term could kill the festival because it’s not sustainable.” Codruta Vulcu (ARTmania) 🎸 Booking international talent “It’s the international stadium acts that we have to look at as our headliners, which is also difficult when there are so many stadium tours happening.
