The Netherlands Aerospace Centre (Nederlands Lucht- en Ruimtevaartcentrum) joins forces with zepp.solutions to work towards flying on liquid hydrogen, a promising development to make aviation more sustainable. This collaboration is a key pillar in NLR's ambition to conduct a demo flight in 2026. To enable this manned flight on liquid hydrogen in 2026, NLR will equip its electric-powered research aircraft, the Pipistrel Aircraft Velis Electro, with a hydrogen powertrain. A crucial element is the fuel cell system, which Zepp.solutions will develop in close cooperation with the research institute. Jan Bot, co-founder of zepp.solutions: “Our fuel cell technology has already proven itself in various sectors. We bring a lot of knowledge and experience when it comes to developing efficient and compact fuel cell systems. However, aviation offers completely different challenges. This cooperation, and to be able to learn from each other in this way, is therefore incredibly valuable. In developing the hydrogen system for the Pipistrel, together with NLR, we will not only demonstrate the potential of hydrogen in aviation but also learn lessons that can be of great value to this sector.”

Big step today at STR for hydrogen in aviation. 🛫 The German Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr) today announced their support for the BALIS 2.0 project. The development and testing of high-performance fuel cell systems for regional aircraft will be funded with 9.3 million EUR. Our partner H2FLY is involved, together with Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. and Diehl Aviation. ✈ Dr. Volker Wissing (Minister for Digital and Transport) says: "I am very proud that Germany is playing a pioneering role in the development of hydrogen fuel cell systems for commercial aviation. We are creating the technical basis for marketable solutions for the carbon neutral aviation of tomorrow. Companies and research institutions in BALIS 2.0 project are boldly leading the way with great expertise and their pioneering spirit." 🎯 "We need partnerships like this to make a real difference to more sustainable aviation. It's great that we have the world's technology leaders on our doorstep," says Ulrich Heppe, CEO of Stuttgart Airport. 🤝 #fairportSTR #STRzero #hydrogen #aviation #aerospaceLÄND

Hydrogen-powered flight is on the horizon, and today's talk by Cranfield Aerospace Solutions, hosted by the Royal Aeronautical Society was truly inspiring to me. It's incredible to learn how companies pioneering hydrogen flight are also the ones who are helping to set industry standards and regulation. Starting with gaseous hydrogen and then scaling up to liquid hydrogen is a critical step in making sustainable flight a reality. Exciting times for the aviation industry!
