As part of the Thames Water Fortis Green Trunk Main Replacement project team’s ongoing support for the Friends of Arnos Park volunteering group, we were happy to help out at their Groundforce Day events held in November and last weekend. Thank you to Sebastian Antosiewicz (General Foreman), Tomasz Rachfal (Ganger), Harriclea B. (Customer and Stakeholder Manager), Wieslaw Adamarek (Carpenter), Isabel Duke (Customer and Stakeholder Advisor), Marta Pnishi (Customer and Stakeholder Lead), Marc Pattemore (Ganger) and Sorin Botezatu (Skilled Operative) for spending time on their Saturdays helping to manage the meadow and scrub by clearing trees and tidying branches. Clearing the overgrown areas ensures the community can safely access and use areas within the park which were previously inaccessible. Helping to maintain the natural environment within the park also supports its wildlife. #OurEnvironment #SocialValue #Volunteering

Synergy volunteers helped support seagrass conservation with OzFish Unlimited in Cockburn Sound by collecting and sorting seagrass fruit. Synergy once again partnered with OzFish Unlimited, a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting and restoring Australia’s marine habitats. The initiative was part of Synergy’s commitment to giving back to the community and promoting environmental sustainability. #conservation #seagrassrestoration #restoration #volunteering

And what a fantastic day it was 💙 Natural Flood Management (NFM) utilises landscape and natural processes to reduce flood risk. It involves measures like planting trees, restoring rivers to their natural courses, and creating wetlands to absorb and store excess water, thereby mitigating flood impacts while enhancing biodiversity - a holistic approach to climate resilience! Flood risk reduction like this project at Gissing is critically important. It protects communities from the devastating impacts of flooding, enhances public safety, and supports sustainable development.
For National Volunteers’ Week we’re celebrating some of our amazing volunteers! Just like this team who spent the day at Gissing in Norfolk helping to reduce flood risk through a Natural Flood Management project with Norfolk Rivers Trust. They got stuck in by installing woody debris and carrying out essential maintenance tasks. The project is a collaboration between NORFOLK RIVERS TRUST, River Waveney Trust, our partner WWF-UK and us. It will go a long way to protect communities from the increasing risk of flooding, whilst improving biodiversity. At Aviva, we’re proud to offer our people up to 3 days volunteering leave per year 💛 #VolunteersWeek #HelpingTheUKGetReady

Fed up with an overgrown, unusable space on their school site, Blackrod Primary School are using the Green Spaces Fund to turn it into a community garden for children, families, and community members 🍎 They'll be growing food, teaching about wildlife and healthy food production, and introducing a composting system to enhance soil health and reduce waste. The school hope that their Green Spaces Fund project will foster a closer-knit, healthier community whilst providing accessible green space in Bolton. Lancashire Wildlife Trust

Volunteers Week 2024 🫶🏼 This week is National Volunteers Week -time for us to celebrate the amazing contribution people make to the community. 🙌🏽 Volunteering was a gift to me after I moved abroad. It is something embedded in Western societies: it is made a lot more accessible and possible than it was in Hungary (maybe just life struggle was too draining, or I was too young and didn't care to do it? not sure). Either way, volunteering became a big part of my life since 2015. A few great experiences I had, just in case you need ideas: - Sundays in Durrell Zoo: I truly miss being surrounded by animals🐻, cleaning up their areas💩, food prep, or manning butterfly house 🦋 - Bat monitoring: I fell in love with bats big time while in Jersey, so recording their sounds and monitoring bats was a great experience 🦇 -Water testing in Citizen Science Program in Jersey: shocking but hugely important results... Let's not even mention water quality and sewage spillage going on in UK (disgrace)💩 - Sussex Wildlife Trust: I enjoy the HIT squad days clearing hedges, wood chopping, planting native wildflowers or litter picking🚯 - Brighton Permaculture Trust: orchard planting in hail and gale force wind wasn't on my list but I did enjoy it nevertheless! 🍎🌳 - Parkrun: the thing is I am NOT a runner, just tackling a beginners-course, but I either join as marshal (cheering) or tail-walker.🏃🏽♂️➡️ - I try and join lot of beach cleans organised by Leave No Trace, Marine Conservation Society, the Sussex Dolphin Project (their boat trips are fab by the way, if you haven't been yet!) 🐬 I know a lot of people who help other charities, support wonderful initiatives and are doing great things. Huge thank you to all of those who dedicate time and effort to volunteer!👏🏼 Share your volunteering experiences- maybe someone else is just looking for inspiration. Volunteering actually helped me hugely when I struggled with my mental health: so can highly recommend it as a remedy. It gives purpose, perspective, and it is a joyful focus time. 🫂 #volunteersweek #volunteering #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness

Rural and Indigenous communities many times have employees that wear many hats. They do not have the ability to hire extra personnel to assist with grant writing, do the additional work needed to build resilience against future disasters, or have the additional matching funds that some grants require. Philanthropy organizations can help fill this crucial gap needed for these communities be prepared for disasters.
Unfortunately, this is not a new conversation, but excited to be part of an organization working to change this paradigm! Always proud of the work Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC) is doing to build vibrant, healthy, and thriving rural and Indigenous communities throughout the west. #RuralMatters

We've seen plenty of discussion about this article. Though National Parks Authorities are not charities themselves, all boards – regardless of legal setup – benefit from a diversity of skills, knowledge and experience, and inclusive practice. In addition, National Park Authorities work closely with many charities. A lack of #diversity on a #NationalPark board may have knock-on impacts on charities in partnership. Covering 10% of our country, we're hopeful that NPAs will make moves towards stronger #governance. https://lnkd.in/eMNEjnYv

It's great to look back on the accomplishments of the 23/24 financial year which saw 3 #SANG transfer to The Land Trust in 3 different counties, bringing the Trust’s SANG portfolio to 14, spanning nearly 400 hectares. The pipeline for new SANG is growing every month and subject to the usual caveats, we expect to acquire over 100 hectares by March 2026. With the introduction of mandatory #BNG and the nascent offsite BU market, most new SANG on LT's pipeline have stacked BNG with a view of selling the BU alongside the SANG capacity. It's made for some interesting debate and adds a new layer of complexity to the legal negotiation, but overall it's positive to quantify and deliver multiple benefits from green infrastructure in perpetuity. There's a lot of discussion around the nascent BU market and supply and demand at the moment. One anecdotal observation from me is that it is reasonable to assume that the BU market will be more buoyant in LPAs where SANG are required. This could impact pricing of BU in these areas due to greater supply and 'SANG BU' potentially able to be sold for less than 'Habitat Bank BU'.
The Land Trust has taken on the ownership and management of three new SANG (Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspaces) in 2023/24. Created to relieve recreational pressure on the nearby Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area, Oldlands Copse in Surrey, Sunningdale Park in, Berkshire, and Blandford Woods in Hampshire, bring the Land Trust’s SANG portfolio to 14, spanning nearly 400 hectares. These green spaces will enable the Trust to achieve important charitable delivery and social value for the local community, while also preserving and improving the environment.
