Are we here to just manage natures decline? Nature / we can't be revived within an Economic Growth (GDP) model, that only increases wealth disparity whilst consuming natural resources with impunity. Wellbeing Economy Cymru (WE Cymru) https://lnkd.in/e4wasSZ5
Most of our current approaches to nature conservation in the UK don't work, but this isn't discussed widely by nature conservationists, and we aren't changing the way we deliver nature conservation very quickly 🤷♂️ Is this because: We don't know what else to do? We can't measure the impact of our work so can't adjust in real time? We're scared we'll lose donors if we admit it isn't working and change? We're trying to protect our self-esteem and sense of purpose? We're on a treadmill of funding/delivering what we already do? We're focused on maintaining the institutions we formed 100+ years ago to tackle yesterdays problems, and can't change our organisations/approach? Or one of a thousand other reasons, what do you think? There are so many millions of amazing people and donors dedicating their lives and funds to this cause, that our diversity of thought, skills, and approaches CAN reverse the nature and climate crises. But to begin with we need to get serious about innovation and leadership in nature conservation, and stop doing what we've always done, or we'll always get what we've always got. And I for one didn't sign up to manage the decline of nature over a 50 year career then retire saying "I did my best" and "Imagine how much worse it would have been without us", for me nature is either in decline or it isn't, that is the only measure of success, and whilst it's declining, what we're doing isn't working. So let's get creative, trial innovative approaches quickly and cheaply, share the learning, and make a bigger difference, more quickly? We've got this, but we have to be honest, brave, and work together to solve the nature and climate crises💪🌍 Rich Stockdale PhD James Hitchcock William Vine Evan Bowen-Jones Kat Bruce Mike Morris Tim Graham Ian Jelley Georgia Dent Joanna Lewis Delia Garratt steve spode Ian Barrett

Call to all companies. We know in business that the tide is turning towards sustainability and accountability. You are either part of the problem or part of the solution to climate change, mass extinction, ecocide, marine conservation.....the list seems endless. Worry not (it doesn't do any good anyway!). Did you know there are countless projects underway world wide making real change. You can be part of it. There's plenty of evidence out there that points towards a real benefit in placing the fight against #climatechange #ecocide #biodiversityloss at the heart of your business. But how? It's easier than you think. Here's an organisation that's nailing partnership for conservation world wide - see link below... In addition to EOCA European Outdoor Conservation Association I'd also urge you to contact Dan Wood or Adam Bastock . They are well placed to advice you on where to start your journey. The benefits will positively impact your whole workforce. Please share widely. Let's get the message out there! https://lnkd.in/erApVybu

We are developing our first ever Tree and Woodland strategy to help improve air quality, enhance biodiversity and create vibrant outdoor spaces for future generations. We are working with leading experts in this field, Treeconomics, to look at the canopy across Bolsover District and set out how we can ensure that all communities get good access to trees and woodland. It will encompass a range of goals, including: - increased tree planting - protection of existing woodlands - long-term plans for tree maintenance and conservation efforts. By fostering a healthy tree canopy, we will be aiming to mitigate climate change impacts, increase natural habitats for wildlife and improve the well-being of local communities. As climate change tightens its hold with warmer, wetter winters and drier hotter summers, coupled with more extreme weather events, the strategy will reflect our ambitions to cherish trees and woodlands and make them more resilient and adaptable. https://lnkd.in/eV7vpgFS

The almost 6-month mark of me starting at The Wildlife Trusts has coincided with the launch of our new planning report: Swift and wild: How to build houses and restore nature together. The UK Government plans for new homes and new energy can be incredibly daunting for local communities who have had to fight to save nature-rich spaces near them and given the stark figures that show the extent of nature’s decline. But as examples from across the network of Wildlife Trusts show, well-located and well designed development can deliver for local communities, the climate and for wildlife. Luckily we have the tools to ensure these ‘best practice’ case studies become the norm and by strengthening the planning system – through: 🗺️ Strategic planning with nature at its heart 🦋 Improving protection of key nature sites 🌳 Embedding nature into the design of new homes and communities, and, 🙂 Incorporating ecological expertise into development design and empowering local communities and stakeholders to engage - new development can help us address the nature and climate crises head on. Conservation is something that resonates deeply with me, and it’s not just because I care about plants and animals—though I definitely do. It’s about so much more than that. Conservation is about preserving the delicate balance of our planet, ensuring that future generations can experience the same wonders of nature that we enjoy today. It’s about recognizing our role as stewards of the Earth, and understanding that our actions have far-reaching consequences. One of the things I love most about conservation is the sense of hope it brings. In a world where we’re constantly reminded of environmental challenges—deforestation, species extinction, climate change—conservation offers a way forward. It’s a reminder that we can make a difference, that our collective efforts can lead to real, positive change. Whether it’s protecting an endangered species, restoring a damaged ecosystem, or simply reducing our own carbon footprint, every action counts.

💚 🌍 Happy World Environment Day 🌏💚 It’s a day for positivity, with theme being #GenerationRestoration – a call to revive lands, end desertification and secure water. 🏜 🌊 🌳 🦕 🐣 And just a reminder, the ‘generation’ call out doesn’t make this just a young-person’s problem. Climate change issues affect everyone, of every age and every generation; it’s a call to us all. It’s also a call to respect indigenous peoples’ land management practices and rights; a call to secure safe water for everyone; and to revive environments across the globe, not just for the benefit of the west. There are lots of global events going on, as well as in schools and institutions. But if you’re not currently participating in a global/political movement, what could you actually do today/this week/this month to make a difference? I’ve got a few ideas: 💧 You might think clean, safe water is not an issue in a country like the UK – but you’d be wrong. Check out Surfers Against Sewage and City to Sea to find out more. 🌱 You could plant trees or help with landscape restoration work. Ask your local council about tree planting near you or check out The Woodland Trust for more ideas. You could also sponsor or fund a tree or look to make your outdoor space (if you have one) a bit more wildlife friendly. 🍫 You could litter pick or join an organised litter pick. 💻 Research just one way you could reduce your waste and/or consumption. It’s an impossible ask to cut out all consumption that’s not environmentally friendly, but small steps are big steps. You could compile a list of planet-damaging brands that you no longer want to support and think of ways to move away from them. 💪 You could join an environmental group or movement in your local area. Start an initiative at a local school, your office or club… The options are endless. And that’s something I find really positive. With so much change to make – there’s so much scope, no wrong place to start and every little counts. Got any ideas to share? #WorldEnvironmentDay #Sustainability #EcosystemRestoration #GlobalGuardians #EnvironmentalStewardship #CommunityEngagement
