🚀 Thrilled to have presented my work at RETASTE 2024 - Rethink Food Resources, Losses, and Waste in Crete, Greece! 🌍 💡 I shared my project titled: MICROBIAL BOOST: DEVELOPING A COMPLEX BIOREMEDIATION INOCULUM FROM PIG SLURRY, developed by the BIO-175 research team in the Microbiology Area at the Universidad de Almería. The company now produces high-performance protein concentrates from circular materials like plant-based presscakes and insects, to replace traditional ingredients like fishmeal and soy in animal and aquaculture feed. Ocean Twist’s rebranding highlights its commitment to reducing pressure on marine ecosystems by offering sustainable, scalable alternatives to ocean-derived resources. “We identified a large gap in the market: fishmeal demand is rising very fast, but its availability is limited. We are excited to announce the launch of another nano project! #NanoAzadirachtin! At the heart of IIL Biologicals Ltd. i.e. "NanoBiotech Research Lab.", we have successfully developed "Nanoformulation of Azadirachtin (3000 ppm)" with particle size <10 nm. We are Grateful to Our Mentors (Mr. Rajesh Aggarwal, MD, IIL Biologicals Ltd. and Dr. LC Rohela, AVP, QC/QA, IIL) and Kudos to the Team! Nano-formulations in agriculture involve the application of nanoparticles to improve the delivery and efficacy of fertilizers, pesticides, and biostimulants. These formulations enhance the bioavailability of active ingredients, reduce environmental impact, and provide controlled release of nutrients or agrochemicals. Azadirachtin is a naturally occurring compound extracted from the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica). It is widely recognized for its insecticidal, antifeedant, and growth regulatory properties, making it a powerful biopesticide in sustainable agriculture. Azadirachtin interferes with the hormonal systems of insects, preventing molting and reproduction, thus controlling pest populations without harming beneficial organisms. It is used to control a wide variety of insect pests, including aphids, whiteflies, and caterpillars, in crops like fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals. It is eco-friendly, biodegradable, and non-toxic to humans, making it a key component in integrated pest management (IPM) programs. Nano-formulations of Azadirachtin can help significantly reduce the applications of agrochemicals, minimize environmental contamination, and promote precision agriculture by optimizing resource use. Currently, the product is under different phases of evaluation for its efficacy. A project funded by FONTAGRO, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) and executed by AGROSAVIA - Corporación colombiana de investigación agropecuaria - Colombia, the Institute of Biodiversity and Biotechnology Research (INBIOTEC CONICET) - Argentina, in partnership with the National Federation of Cereal, Legume, and Soybean Growers (Fenalce) - Colombia, AgResearch - Nueva Zelanda, the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) - Argentina and Universidad Nacional de Quilmes (UNQUI) - Argentina, is being launched to increase maize production and resilience in Colombia and Argentina. By integrating beneficial fungi, it aims to reduce the use of agrochemicals and mitigate the effects of climate change.   With bioproducts, production is expected to increase while benefiting the environment. Six months have passed since the successful conclusion of the Horizon 2020/CBE JU project SUSFERT in December 2023. Over the past five and a half years, this initiative has developed innovative bio-based fertilisers designed to integrate seamlessly into existing production processes and EU agricultural practices. The SUSFERT - SUStainable FERTtilisers project demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in selected field trials, showcasing novel prototype components such as biodegradable coatings, probiotics, and struvite as replacements for phosphorus and iron supply. Additionally, lignosulfonate-based nutrigels were evaluated for their economic potential and sustainability.  Acies played a significant role in this project by upgrading our fermentation facility to produce rhodotorulic acid, an essential iron chelator for sustainable iron fertilization. This contribution shows our commitment to partake in biotechnological innovations that promote environmentally friendly agricultural practices within the European Union. We are proud to have been part of this project and are excited about the future. As we look ahead, Acies remains open to future collaborations in European projects to continue driving innovation and sustainability in agriculture, such as Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) initiative. We are open for collaborations on develpoment of new biobased microbial technologies and showcasing them in our multipurpose fermentation demonstration plant based in Slovenia. Exciting collaboration published in Videnskab.dk! 📰   We are happy to announce a successful collaboration on research dissemination at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain), written by special consultant at DTU Biosustain Vanesa Sanchez-Guajardo, PhD with our senior researcher Pablo Cruz-Morales. Their article has been featured in the Danish media outlet Videnskab.dk, shedding light on a revolutionary approach to sustainable agriculture:   🧟♂️ Are zombie insects the way to farming without traditional pesticides? 🧟♀️   Just imagine if we could turn insects into 'zombie insects' to protect our crops without using harmful pesticides. This inventive research demonstrates how molecules from fungal infections can prevent insects from eating crops by putting them into a 'zombie state'. The method preserves the beneficial roles of insects in nature and is harmless to humans.   🌾 The benefits are clear: the crops win, the insects win, the environment wins, and we win—a rare win-win-win-win-win scenario😊   However, for this method to be viable, the public and policymakers must accept the use of sustainable, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture. Are we ready to take that step? 🤔   This research by Senior researcher Pablo Cruz-Morales highlights the longstanding symbiosis between fungi and plants, and how fungal molecules can be harnessed to create eco-friendly biopesticides. By preventing insects from eating crops without killing them, we can maintain a balanced ecosystem and avoid pesticide resistance.   While this promising data brings us closer to a sustainable future, we need to ensure that our biopesticides are insect-specific and safe for humans.
