Day 200 Going CLEAR: When you feel like you made it, but then also suck Today I was forwarded the fundraising deck of a salestech startup who put Warmly,'s signal-based orchestration platform in their Competitive Landscape. It made my heart soar thinking that we were well known enough that new founders think of us as "the establishment" and need to justify to investors how they're going to beat us. And then I saw we were put in the freaking BOTTOM LEFT of the landscape 😭 I mean, come on! It soon reminded me of late nights when I was fundraising and I would try to cleverly arrange my competitive landscape deck. With little to no information, I would toss multi-billion dollar companies into the bottom left of the matrix and boldly declare that we were 100x better than them. We weren't better then, but hey a guy has got to try. They were a random logo I used to make my point, I didn't think of the hardworking people behind the company. Now that I'm on the other side of things - being cast as the "point solution" that is "rule based" ... I laugh at how naive I was when I got started building in salestech. But I suppose its really that exact naïveté that gets founders to get into the ring and work for years to build something better. We can also ignore the fact that we're AI Native, have Full-Scale Capabilities and go Closed/Won against Qualified all the time. 🤠 Hats off to my good friends Tido (CEO of Koala) and Jonathan (CEO of Demostack) who (sorry gents) join me in the bottom left quadrant of shame. ps. 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 "𝐮𝐧-𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞" 𝐟𝐨𝐫 OmniCreator We agreed on a new KPI that is pretty crazy for a startup but it makes so much sense👇️ I found out that at the end of last year my co-founder Daigo writes a birthday post in December reflecting on his year. He does it on a Japanese blog. Last year it was about how we start Omnicreator, a SaaS tool built around a LinkedIn creator community. Apparently, the blog was a major hit! Daigo joked and said "Hey we have to grow but thats not enough. We have to have a good story. Last year was about going 0 to 1. What can we do to make this year's story great?" So we laughed and agreed on a "story-driven" business model. This was a our second "un-offsite" as we avoid things you usually see at an offsite like white boards, KPIs, meeting rooms etc. We always end at George's on the Cove in La Jolla, which is where we end our day with insightful ideas and next steps in our business.
