An interesting study to read along the weekend: "Cleantech in the Nordics" (Market study, 13th May 2024) https://lnkd.in/dfBTtQJj A few takeaways: 1. Cleantech companies play a significant role in the Nordics: not only do they develop and commercialize crucial innovations aiming towards a net zero future, but they also provide jobs, investments and wealth to the Nordic societies.  2. The number of founded cleantech companies in the Nordics has been rather stable in recent years, with around 140 firms being founded annually. 3. Circular economy is by far the largest segment of the Nordic cleantech industry with 385 companies, whereas Storage is the largest category by employees (approx. 6,600 employees) and Built environment by net sales (1.7 b€).  4. The two largest fundraisers, H2 Green Steel and Northvolt, have collected over half of the VC funding in recent years. 5. The typical cleantech startup received their first VC funding round after around 30 months of setting up the firm; later graduation times typically around 1.5-2 years. 6. Software startups are the quickest fundraisers in the first funding round – asset heavy industries such as renewables and resources are much slower. 💡 New study by our network partner H2UB: Mind the Gap: Navigating the Investment Landscape of Hydrogen Startups 💡 Our partner H2UB, the central European platform for startups active in the hydrogen ecosystem, has launched a study to investigate patterns of venture funding of hydrogen startups in Europe and the US with state-of-the-art data on venture funding provided by Net Zero Insights. 🎯TOP 3 takeaways from their study: 1.    There is a steady increase in funding for climate technologies. Total investment is highest in the US, but Europe catches up significantly. Hydrogen funding has especially taken off, outpacing the general climate tech trend. 2.    The total volume of equity invested is around twice as high in the US. The same is true for average deal sizes. While early-stage financing in Europe is on a par with the US, the volume of later-stage financing in the US is five to six times higher. 3.    The majority of funding in Europe and the US goes to H2 production technology, but with different emphases. Valencia-based startup Matteco secured €15 million ($16.2 million) in a Series A funding round to build a factory manufacturing catalysts and electrodes for green hydrogen production, aiming to reach 1 GW annual capacity. The facility utilizes a patented tech developed over 10 years of R&D for platinum-free high-performance catalysts, coatings, and electrodes used in alkaline and anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers. With the new funds, Matteco plans to expand its workforce to 100 by 2025 and further enhance production methods. Matteco, a Valencia-based start-up, focuses on developing innovative Green Hydrogen and Cleantech solutions for a sustainable future. With a recent $16.2 million Series A funding round, the company plans to open a factory producing catalysts and electrodes for green hydrogen generation. This facility, located in Paterna, will utilize a patented technology resulting from 10 years of research and development. As part of their growth strategy, Matteco aims to increase its workforce to 100 by 2025 and expand its production capacity to 1 GW per year. It wasn't long ago where I postet the different challenges faced by #startups depending on their #TRL level. Now I have found this from Cleantech for Europe, who have published their report on "A Cleantech Investment Plan for European Competitiveness". The report, supported by Breakthrough Energy focuses on how the EU can become the #industrial and #climate leader of the next decades. In addition to different opinions from Henrik Henriksson of H2 Green Steel, for example, on the financing of #FOAK plants, I think this picture is great for hardware startups as it shows: 1️⃣ Non-dilutive, dilutive and mix fundings, 2️⃣ List of private funders, 3️⃣ List of public funders.
