🙌 Today, on Pan-African Women's Day, we celebrate the tireless, strong, and resilient women who are the backbone of #agriculture across Africa. In Africa, women play a vital role in ensuring #foodsecurity, sustainable farming practices, and the well-being of their communities. At Ceva, we stand for these incredible women who make a monumental impact on agriculture every day. 🌍 Among Pan-African women are farmers, the guardians of our fields, the nurturers of our livestock, and the stewards of our natural resources. They manage diverse tasks, from planting and harvesting to caring for animals and conserving the environment. Their knowledge, dedication, and hard work drive progress in agriculture and ensure that food reaches our tables. 📊As the backbone of the sector, they represent 52% of the total population in agriculture and are responsible for around 50% of agricultural work on farms in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Reports show that in some African countries, women devote around 60% of their time to agricultural activities - over 60% of women working in the SSA work in the agricultural sector. 👏 Ceva is proud to recognize the immense potential of Pan-African women and the importance of empowering them! #PanAfricanWomensDay #EmpowerWomen #Sustainability

What’s new in the Agriculture sector series; 2026 Declared International Year of the Woman Farmer Recently the United Nations General Assembly declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer, a testament to women’s critical role in global food and agricultural production. Spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, USDA and supported by over 100 co-sponsors, including the U.S. government, this declaration aims to raise awareness of the unique challenges women in agriculture face and catalyze action to address them. Women are responsible for approximately half of the world’s food production, yet they often face greater food insecurity than men. The #InternationalYearoftheWomanFarmer will highlight these disparities and advocate for women’s equal access to economic, educational, and leadership opportunities in agriculture. This, in return, will empower women farmers and advance global food security. In Africa, women farmers play a crucial role, producing 70% of the continent’s food. At RiceAfrika Rwanda, we are committed to revolutionizing agriculture, recognizing the significant contribution of women to the sector. By empowering women farmers with the right tools, resources, and support, we aim to enhance agricultural productivity and food security across Africa. At RiceAfrika Rwanda we envision an Africa that can feed itself and the world. Stay tuned to be informed about how we strive to improve the productivity of smallholder farmers. 🌾 Women Farmers: Key to Africa’s Food Security 🌍 Women produce up to 80% of sub-Saharan Africa’s food, yet they often lack equal access to resources. If women farmers had the same opportunities as men, their yields could increase by 20-30%, lifting millions out of hunger. Alphonsine's story shows the potential of women farmers across the continent. A 24-year-old farmer in Rwanda, she joined One Acre Fund and saw her harvests grow fivefold, creating surplus income to invest in a shop and secure her family’s future. 🚜 As Africa's population heads toward 2.5 billion by 2050, empowering women farmers isn’t just an option—it’s essential. By addressing the specific challenges women face in accessing land, financing, and markets, we can unlock massive productivity gains that will improve food security and foster sustainable growth. The data backs this up: Closing the gender gap in agriculture could add $1 trillion to global GDP and lift 45 million people out of hunger. 🌍📈 At One Acre Fund, we’re taking action by providing women farmers like Alphonsine with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive. But there’s still more to be done. Let’s continue working together to create inclusive, resilient food systems that ensure Africa’s agricultural future is secure. #FoodSecurity #WomenInAgriculture #Sustainability

The role of women in agriculture in Africa is significant and multifaceted, playing crucial roles in various aspects of agricultural production, processing, marketing, and distribution. Women make up a large portion of the agricultural labor force in Africa, often performing tasks such as planting, weeding, harvesting, and post-harvest processing. In many rural areas, women are the primary producers of staple crops like maize, millet, and cassava. Also, Women play a critical role in ensuring food security and proper nutrition for their families and communities. They are often responsible for household food production, including cultivating kitchen gardens and raising small livestock, which contribute to diversified diets and improved nutrition. Up to 65% of Africa’s productive land is estimated to be degraded, and many smallholder farmers must eke out a living on degraded and nutrient depleted soils 🌱 Evidence shows that increasing women’s control over agricultural management decisions can enhance soil quality and increase land productivity. However, gender inequality is deeply embedded in soil health and plant nutrient management, and must be urgently addressed. With this week’s launch of the African Union’s African Fertilizer and Soil Health Action Plan at the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit, learn more about how empowering women farmers can help improve Africa’s soil health and plant nutrition ⬇️ 📖 This new blog by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) covers the issues women farmers face and includes recommendations for building on the Action Plan: https://bit.ly/3WtFmw4 💻 Watch today’s summit side event, sponsored by the CGIAR GENDER Impact Platform, the CGIAR Initiative on NEXUS Gains, GROOTS Kenya, the USAID, and International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), at 2 pm EAT: https://bit.ly/4acKmIP #AFSH24 #NEXUSGainsInitiative #OneCGIAR #SoilHealth #GenderEquality
