Today, MPs at the House of Commons were due to hold an important debate on the future of hospice care funding in the UK. With so many hospices facing a significant financial deficit this coming year (on top of those experienced last year!), this debate was never needed more, and was a light of hope for hospices up and down the country. But, they ran out of time to discuss this topic and hear from the MPs who wished to speak, and it is to be rescheduled. But the clock is ticking. How much time is left before many hospices will be forced to cut vital services, when demand has never been higher and these services are never needed more. What is important is that enough time is protected for this important discussion at this level - something that impacts all constituencies across the UK, and it provides us with more time to encourage our MPs to attend the next scheduled debate. It is completely astonishing that to receive patient centred end of life palliative care in the UK, delivered with compassion, dignity and respect, we rely on sponsored runs, open gardens, people buying second hand clothes and gifts left in Wills. Can you imagine treating maternity services like this? There would be uproar (and rightly so). So why is it acceptable at the end of life? PLEASE support your local hospice, so we can keep supporting you! #Hospicecare #Hospices #Charity #Dorset #ThirdSector
It was timely to see such a powerful articulation of the importance of children and adult hospice services on BBC Breakfast this morning. Thank you to Barbara-Anne Walker and Claire Shaw from Ashgate Hospice , Gareth Pierce MCIOF(AdvDip) from Forget Me Not Children's Hospice , and my colleague Katie Reade of Hospice UK for together making the case so strongly why today’s debate in Parliament must lead to fairer (and more) Government funding for the country’s charitable hospice sector. The time for serious discussion and action is now. If you missed it you can watch it on BBC Iplayer - I have put the link below this post as a comment - section starts at 2.17.10
