After attending my organizations leadership summit this past week, I reflected on a question asked of us during our division breakout session; "Why do we work safe"? Taking in account my vast years of experience and the roles I've held while at my previous employer, I reflected on "Why I work safe". This is my safety commitment to Beacon, and what I will read to my team during tomorrows safety meeting then post on our safety wall. Why I Work Safe I work safe because my life is interconnected with so many others who depend on me—my family, friends, loved ones, colleagues, employees, and my organization. Each day, I have a responsibility not just to myself but to those who count on me to come home safe, healthy, and capable of continuing to contribute to their lives. Safety is not just a job requirement; it’s a mindset that extends to every aspect of life. Whether I’m at work, on the road, or spending time with my loved ones, prioritizing safety ensures I can continue to fulfill my roles and responsibilities. It allows me to support my family, collaborate with my colleagues, and be present for the milestones and everyday moments that truly matter. When I commit to working safe, I’m also leading by example—empowering those around me to recognize the value of safety. By fostering a culture where safety is a shared priority, I help create a ripple effect that can prevent accidents, protect livelihoods, and build a stronger, more responsible community. Ultimately, safety is about respect—for myself, for others, and for the opportunities life provides. It’s about making choices that honor those who care for me and ensuring that I, in turn, can care for them. That’s why I work safe, not just on the job, but in every moment of life.

When I graduated, I had no idea what public affairs firms did. It seemed like the only political career options were going to the hill or a think tank. Navigating life in that first year out of college can be difficult - everyone wants experience, but an internship might be all you have. That's why we created the fellowship: to give young professionals an intro to public affairs, letting them see if that field and THG are the right, long-term fit. If you or someone you know is looking for that next step, DM me, and we can talk next steps.
The Herald Group’s fellowship program has paved the way for success for a handful of your favorite THG team members from Associate to Director. Check out who started as a fellow, what they have to say about the program, and what it offers for future leaders in our industry. https://lnkd.in/eJgV9bsP

2024 showed me, once again, that student leadership isn't just about programs—it's about transformation. Take Hayden, a marine science major who didn't just study food systems—he reimagined them. Through his internship at The Food Basket, he developed innovative hydroponic growing techniques that could help reduce local food insecurity. That's the magic of community engagement: turning academic knowledge into real-world solutions. This year at UH Hilo's Center for Community Engagement, we expanded our Bonner Leadership Program, creating pathways for students to become genuine community changemakers. We're not just teaching skills; we're cultivating a generation of leaders who understand that meaningful change starts at the local level. Highlights that captured our journey: • Supported student-led initiatives addressing critical community challenges • Developed capacity for faculty engaged scholars to grow, connect & thrive • Strengthened community partnerships through hands-on student engagement projects We're committed to expanding our community impact, deepening student leadership opportunities, and proving that education is most powerful when it's practiced, not just studied.

This week marks the conclusion of a transformative two-year programme we delivered in partnership with Mars Food & Nutrition brand Ben’s Original - The Seat at the Table. Designed by Be Inclusive Hospitality, this initiative was developed to enhance access, build skills, and provide mentorship opportunities for Black hospitality professionals across the UK. Over the past two years, we have supported 31 talented individuals with the skill-building component delivered by the esteemed Leiths Education. To celebrate the culmination of this impactful programme, we visited the final five participants as they completed one of their concluding modules. It was great to witness their progress and the strong relationships they have forged with their peers. We look forward to sharing more details on the programme’s impact very soon! We'd love to hear from you if you're passionate about supporting initiatives that promote a more equitable and inclusive hospitality industry. Giving back to Penn State students with an endowed award is such a rewarding way to channel my philanthropy. Here’s a few reasons why… 1. It gives me to opportunity to connect with amazing students like Gabriela Mutone to support her college experience and give gratitude for what she has done for the THON and SHM community. 2. It puts my donations to work in an endowment that will continue to give in perpetuity, even after I’m gone. 3. Award criteria is customizable for the donor. I was honor my two largest Penn State passions, SHM and THON leadership. 4. $1,000 per quarter for 5 years is the commitment for an award level giving, with it being awarded once you fully fund it. This was a great way to channel my annual giving into one source. 5. Naming the gift brings awareness that allows me to connect with other potential donors and share why I decided to give this way. It also normalizes planned giving for all, removing the misconception that it requires decades of wealth and six figures gifts. As a steward and champion for Penn State School of Hospitality Management, if you’re interested in planned giving and have any questions - please connect with me. In future years I’d love to see more awards named for our tremendous alumni. #weare #pennstate #shmproud

I am extremely honored to have received a student award at the Penn State Hotel & Restaurant Society Alumni Awards Reception. The Ashley Akright THON Leadership Award, which was presented for the very first time last night, is dedicated to a student who has leadership involvement and participates in THON. A special congratulations to my peers that also received student awards at last night’s reception, including Grace Blanchard, who received the Jason Harner award, given to a student with leadership in THON. Grace is SHM THON’s Family Relations and Social Media Chair. Well deserved! As I enter into my second year as Primary THON Chair/President for Penn State School of Hospitality Management’s Organization benefitting Penn State THON™, I am truly grateful for everyone that has supported me along this journey, specifically the SHM faculty/staff that have nominated me for this award, and especially Ashley Akright for her generosity towards this award.
