🚨 An Emergency Order is needed NOW to protect southern resident killer whales from imminent threats to their survival. WWF-Canada alongside other conservation groups have sent a petition to Fisheries & Oceans Minister Diane Lebouthiller and Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault demanding they do more to save this endangered population of just 74 whales. The seasonal SRKW measures announced Monday largely continue existing measures for protection that are not sufficient for recovery of these whales who now face increased threats with a 7-fold increase in oil tanker traffic from the TMX pipeline. The federal government is failing these endangered whales and hasn't even acted on their *own* recommendations from the Canada Energy Regulator | Régie de l’énergie du Canada for a cumulative effects management plan to reduce underwater noise, collision risk and contaminant levels from vessel traffic in SKRW's critical habitat. “Southern resident killer whales are closer to extinction today than they were 20 years ago. They are in desperate need of a lifeline and substantially increased protection from the multiple threats they face.” – Hussein A., lead specialist marine conservation for WWF-Canada We need stronger measures to reduce underwater noise disturbances from ships, action to increase the availability of Chinook salmon, and prohibition on the dumping of harmful ship waste. The groups behind the petition are the David Suzuki Foundation, Georgia Strait Alliance, Living Oceans Society, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Raincoast Conservation Foundation, and WWF-Canada. 📢 ADOPTED! We are thrilled to announce that our Concerted Action proposed for the blue shark (Prionace glauca) has passed through the CMS COP14 Convention on Migratory Species and is now officially adopted 🥳 What does this mean for blue sharks?! Blue sharks are one of (if not the most) migratory shark species, and as a result one of the most over-fished! The Concerted Actions will help guide positive change for the species already listed on the Convention's Appendix II and help ascertain a long-term conservation action plan. Through management, sustainable tourism, understanding the impacts of fisheries and continued research into blue shark populations/their critical habitats, conservation measures will be implemented with heightened attention and political will. We also hope that an enhanced conservation outlook for blue sharks will protect other threatened and CMS-listed species that occupy the same range and therefore face similar threats. This is a huge milestone for the species and makes the efforts of all stakeholders involved worthwhile. We'd like to thank our partners, funders and collaborators in helping us with this work, especially Shark Conservation Fund and Law of the Wild🦈 📷 Sam Matthews #blueshark #prionaceglauca #concertedaction #protection #CMSCOP14 #mangement #conservation #CMS #MARECO #shark #protectwhatwelove

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has designated March 1st as World Seagrass Day! Did you know? Seagrass is a true flowering plant that can live in the sea. Seagrass meadows are important for supporting commercial fisheries, as they provide habitat, feeding grounds, and spawning grounds for various marine life. Not only that, seagrass has the ability to absorb carbon and stabilize sediment! What can you do? Conserving seagrass is important for maintaining the stability of the 3 pillars of the marine ecosystem. You can help by reducing your use of single-use plastics, not littering in rivers and the sea, supporting organizations that focus on seagrass conservation, and of course, you can spread the word about the importance of seagrass to others. Together, we can protect seagrass and keep our oceans healthy! #WorldSeagrassDay #Seagrass #Sea #Conservation #Indonesia #Sustainability #Sustainable #MarineConservation #Conservation

Yesterday the #RedsideDace Recovery Strategy and Action Plan was finalized by Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada (DFO). Within the Recovery Strategy, they include the #criticalhabitat definition, which mirrors that of Section 29 of Ontario Regulation 829/21 (meander belt width + 30 m). What does this mean? Similar to the existing process, any alteration within Redside Dace habitat will require discussions (and potential permitting) with the Environment, Conservation and Parks | Environnement, Protection de la nature et Parcs (MECP) and DFO. Additional permitting may now be required under the Species at Risk Act (SARA). Link to the Recovery Strategy and Action Plan here: https://lnkd.in/gD9EJibh. #environmentalpermitting #speciesatrisk

On the eve of our day in court with the Environment Agency, our friends at Fidra and the Environmental Investigation Agency have published a statement calling for urgent regulation on agricultural sewage sludge to prevent microplastics and 'forever chemicals' poisoning our land and water. Every year, 3.5 million tonnes of sewage sludge is disposed of by 'landspreading' on farmland as a fertiliser. Sounds reasonable, even like a positive environmental solution, right? Sadly, the stuff that comes out of the waterworks today ain't what it used to be. Sewage sludge contains a complex mixture of chemicals and microplastics arising from domestic flushing, street-level drains, and industrial discharges. Complex and novel substances such as ‘forever chemicals’ PFAS, endocrine-disrupting bisphenols and pharmaceuticals are particularly problematic as they are almost impossible to remove during sludge treatment processes. In 2017, the EA comissioned a report that showed potentially harmful levels of chemicals are entering crops, soils and watercourses, causing a risk to nature and human health. Since then, no action has been taken - this is why Fighting Dirty is taking them in court. More on that later today! 📣 Yesterday, the United States Environmental Protection Agency announced that it will not implement its Vulnerable Species Pilot protections for species at-risk from pesticides until more refined habitat maps are developed. 🗺️ Instead, the EPA is launching a new, updated tool for conservation organizations and other groups to compile their own species range maps and submit them for hundreds of endangered species. https://lnkd.in/gR2BJFKq 🛠️ “These new tools and partnerships are a monumental step forward for the EPA,” said Hardy Kern, MPA, Director of Government Relations at American Bird Conservancy. “Without major changes to the regulatory process, birds will continue to unnecessarily suffer from the overuse of pesticides. We’re seeing some of the most impactful changes ever in the 50-year history of the EPA, and are excited to work with them to keep wildlife protection central as they take these monumental steps.” 🤝 In the case of birds, this could be very beneficial for such at-risk species as Whooping Cranes (pictured 📸), of which only ~800 remain, as well as Sandhill Cranes, Attwater’s Prairie Chicken, Western Yellow-billed Cuckoo, and the Western Meadowlark. 🐦 📖 Read ABC’s 2023 Neonicotinoid Insecticides report for details on how ‘neonics’ harm birds and the insects that sustain them. → https://lnkd.in/e3vX5ui6 US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) #EPA #WildlifeProtection #VulnerableSpecies #VulnerableSpeciesPilot #HabitatMapping #RangeMaps #Pesticides #BirdsAndPesticides #WhoopingCrane #WhoopingCraneProtection #Neonicotinoid #Neonics #NoToNeonics #ConservationCartography #BirdConservation

📢 Did you know that bottom trawling is allowed in the U.K.’s marine reserves? In 2023, commercial fishing vessels spent over 33,000 hours in these protected areas, threatening marine biodiversity. “We’ll call it a protected area, or a sanctuary, and people think that means something really great,” President of Marine Conservation Institute, Lance Morgan told Mongabay. “But they’re always really surprised when I tell them [an MPA] allows for bottom trawling and destructive forms of fishing.” It’s time to strengthen protections for our oceans! #MarineConservation #BottomTrawling #ProtectOurOceans #SaveOurSeas #OceanProtection #MarineBiodiversity https://lnkd.in/gsNz25FN
