Kenzie Awards winners celebrated at the 2023 Conference and to acknowledge the exceptional accomplishments of city and county organizations and entities from across the state of Florida in the field of redevelopment and community enhancement. Congratulations to the City of Groveland for their FRA Award for Project/Infrastructure for the “City of Groveland Dark Sky Initiative.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/etTJaRhc. From the Best Book, the City of Groveland explains, “Groveland recently became the first Dark Sky Community in Florida certified by DarkSky International. This achievement resulted from a three-year Dark-Sky Initiative that engaged residents, businesses, and community stakeholders to help protect the night sky. The city’s lighting ordinance includes a commitment to retrofit all city-owned lighting within five years. New decorative streetlights will revitalize downtown with minimal light pollution and a main street aesthetic. City staff reviews all development applications to ensure compliance with Dark-Sky standards. Groveland’s commitment to environmental preservation and community engagement inspires other local governments and communities to protect Florida’s night sky.” Community Redevelopment Agencies (CRAs) and development organizations serve as catalysts for the enhancement of cities and urban areas through redevelopment initiatives. These organizations are overseen by boards that are composed of five to seven members, separate from local governments. Things we know: 1. Many cities around the nation have specific redevelopment and revitalization plans for neighborhoods with deteriorating homes and buildings. Without the support of municipal redevelopment programs, many of these areas would not attract private developers. 2. Home ownership (instead of renting and developer owned units) has a multitude of benefits including financial security, economic growth, increased neighborhood engagement, and positive impacts on children's education -- to name a few. 3. Building affordable homes - that are specifically owner occupied - is challenging. How do you make sure that the home continues to be owner occupied for the life of the home (or a specific amount of time)? How do you meet the demands of affordable costs, while also meeting the demands of municipal regulations (such as building size, aesthetic exteriors, impact feed, and more)? How do you revitalize a neighborhood without destroying it and displacing the people in the community? 4. Habitat for Humanity International has answers and solutions to nearly all of these concerns and challenges. Some Habitat affiliates are large and building hundreds of homes a year, while some are smaller building 1-3 homes per year. No matter the number of new, safe, affordable homes that a Habitat affiliate partners with and completes with an approved home owner, the impact is real. And partnerships like City of Racine Development and Racine Habitat for Humanity allow for even greater community impact 💥💥 All that to say - go support your local Habitat for Humanity.
