Urgent action is needed to protect marine biodiversity in the South Pacific! New Zealand remains the only country to deep-sea bottom trawl in the South Pacific threatening seamount ecosystems. At this South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (#SPRFMO) meeting, we urge members to unite to protect all seamounts. #ClimateChange is also leading to shifts in the distribution and abundance of fisheries, altering ecosystems, affecting livelihoods, destabilizing food systems and challenging economic security worldwide. The DSCC calls on SPRFMO to agree to: ❌ The closure of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (#VMEs) to #BottomTrawling 🎣 Sustainable management of fisheries across the Convention area 🌊 Implementing a precautionary approach on individual species and broader ecosystems, research and monitoring on the effects of climate change and the closure of fishing in vulnerable marine ecosystem areas. Smart Fisheries Collaboration with WWF 🌏Client/Collaborators: WWF 📍 Location: United Kingdom 📅 Year: 2021 🔄 Project: Climate Smart Fisheries MarFishEco collaborated with WWF, RSPB, and MCS to summarize the latest scientific knowledge regarding blue carbon, fishing impacts and the potential role of the UK's fishing industry in addressing climate change. Here's a glimpse into the 2021 study’s vital insights: * Fisheries have a dual role in climate change. * The distribution and recruitment of some fish stocks are changing with a changing climate. *Carbon emissions from fishing, notably bottom trawling and burning fuel have climate impacts. Tuna is a source of food, jobs, and livelihoods across the world. But tuna stocks are threatened by climate change, with potentially severe consequences for the people who depend on it. To tackle the effects of climate change on fisheries, the #OceanDecade community of scientists works with partners under the leadership of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute to develop strategies to sustain fisheries as a global source of food and jobs, while protecting ocean health and enhancing equitable benefits from fisheries: https://ow.ly/cvsL50RtnSL #WorldTunaDay

Leading Scientists Redefine ‘Sustainability’ to Save the Ocean and Feed a Hungry and Warming Planet Top ocean experts have published a report that redefines the concept of “sustainable fishing” and proposes 11 “golden rules” that radically challenge the flawed approach that currently prevails in fisheries management. Published a week before Brussels’ Ocean Week, and a few months before the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, the rules have been devised to put an end to the ongoing destruction of the oceans caused by fishing, and ensure the renewal of abundant fish populations to feed future generations. They come at a time when scientists have drastically downgraded their assessment of the ocean’s health status. Source- https://lnkd.in/guktWbzK #news #environment #earth #business

#snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking Title: Sustaining Our Seas: The Vitality and Vulnerability of Fisheries Fisheries play a critical role in global food security, livelihoods, and biodiversity. With over three billion people relying on seafood as their primary source of protein, the sustainability of fisheries is paramount. However, rampant overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change pose significant threats to marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. Over the past century, technological advancements have led to intensified fishing efforts, resulting in the depletion of many fish stocks. Unsustainable practices such as bottom trawling and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing exacerbate the problem, causing irreversible damage to marine habitats and fish populations. To address these challenges, efforts are underway to promote sustainable fishing practices, including the implementation of science-based fisheries management strategies, the establishment of marine protected areas, and the adoption of traceability and certification schemes to combat IUU fishing. Furthermore, addressing the root causes of overfishing requires international cooperation and holistic approaches that consider the interconnectedness of marine ecosystems and human activities. By prioritizing conservation and sustainable management, we can safeguard the health of our oceans, preserve biodiversity, and ensure the long-term viability of fisheries for generations to come.

More good news for Canada's #marinebiodiversity Last week Fisheries and Oceans Canada closed all commercial and recreational bottom-contact fisheries within the #LopheliaReef area in order to preserve a "largely pristine cold-water live coral reef" habitat, which contains a high degree of biodiversity and is of cultural significance to the Kitasoo Xai'xais and Heiltsuk First Nations. 🌏 The Lophelia #coralreef is the most northern reef known in the Pacific Ocean, and only discovered in 2021. 🌎 Unfortunately, as with all reefs, Lophelia is susceptible to climate change. A one-degree change in temperature could be devastating (see Globe article). 🌊 Dive into the world of marine conservation with the National Audubon Society's focus on seabird protection and sustainable fisheries management. Seabirds, like majestic sailors of the sky, have faced a 70% decline since 1950 due to challenges from overfishing, climate change, and pollution. Audubon steps in to reverse this crisis through: - Advocacy for sustainable fisheries management to protect both seabirds and small, schooling fish vital for their survival. - Establishment of marine protected areas to provide safe habitats for seabirds, fish, and marine life essential for coastal communities and economies. - Commitment to research and conservation through the Seabird Institute, advancing knowledge and techniques globally. From protecting the Atlantic Puffins' wintering grounds to supporting seabirds and coastal communities against climate change, Audubon's multifaceted efforts stand as beacons of hope for our feathered friends of the ocean. Let's join hands in safeguarding our marine ecosystems and the winged wonders that call them home. 🦜🌊 https://lnkd.in/gs6s8FJf #marineconservation
