Now that Pride is over, businesses have 11 months to decide what kind of ally they want to be to the LGBTQI+ community, and how they want to communicate. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ There are those that are taking meaningful action beyond their own four walls - sponsoring activism with organisations such as GiveOut, making the business case for allyship with Open For Business, or lobbying governments for equality and decriminalisation (Stonewall, Outright International, ILGA-Europe, etc.). For those companies not moving the needle on equality, it’s fine to be silent. Avoid performative allyship, and leave the rainbow communications to the real changemakers. In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we wanted to share a recent conversation with Horacio Gavilan at Hispanic Marketing Council and their #stoplatinocoating campaign with our MAU marketing and advertising community. Here are a few stats from their market guide available for download on their website, https://lnkd.in/dsR_P7si. - 71% of U.S. Latinos are bilingual - Bilingual audiences are 2.5x more likely to share ads that use multiple languages with friends/family - They are 3x more loyal to brands that advertise in Spanish - 66% of Bilingual users appreciate ads that have cultural references to my day-to day-life, not just special occasions (e.g., holidays, heritage month) - 71% want to see more ads with celebrities from my culture - 63% want to see more ads with influencers or creators from my culture The guide also digs into their spending, media and gaming habits. We look forward to sharing more insights from the Hispanic Marketing Council, and create more opportunities for mobile app marketers to find brand success with U.S. Latinos, who have the fifth highest global GDP, ahead of India, UK and France. 

As we witness a historic shift in our political landscape, I can't help but reflect on what this means for women of color (WOC) in all industries, particularly in production and media. Vice President Kamala Harris's potential ascension to the Democratic presidential nomination is a watershed moment. Regardless of party affiliation, seeing a woman of color poised to potentially lead the free world is profound. It challenges norms and opens doors that have long been closed. In our industry, representation matters more than ever. As a WOC in production, I've seen firsthand the challenges we face. VP Harris will likely encounter similar obstacles - her competence questioned, her identity scrutinized. But her resilience can serve as a blueprint for WOC in powerful positions across all sectors. For corporate brands, production studios, and media schools, this moment demands introspection. How are we elevating diverse voices? Are we creating access and truly inclusive environments? The spotlight on Harris amplifies these conversations. A Harris Administration could mean increased support for arts and media, potentially expanding opportunities in our field. But more importantly, Harris's visibility could inspire a new generation of diverse storytellers and producers. As the founder of Productions.com, I'm committed to providing opportunities for production professionals of all backgrounds and this includes bridging gaps and creating access for underrepresented talent. This political shift underscores the importance of our mission. To my fellow WOC in production and beyond, let's use this moment to amplify our voices, support each other, and push for the changes we want to see. Our stories, perspectives, and leadership are not just valuable, they're essential. As we move towards November 2024, let's watch closely, learn, and use these lessons to shape a more inclusive future in production and media. The world is changing. Across many disciplines, scholars have documents and analyzed the impact of the person who creates the piece. In art, the "gaze" can affect how subjects are depicted; for example, a male gaze depict a woman idealized as a love interest while a female gaze may appreciate her scars reflecting her journey. In history, the author can include or leave out certain histories and views, shaping what is widely known about our past. In radio journalism, which this article touches on, a diverse reporting staff can bring in different voices and stories to shape our sense of what is "current" news. Yet to bring in those voices, organizations must do the work. We are pleased to see our Lab's Senior Research Scholar Melissa Abad, PhD and upcoming speaker Dr. Adia Harvey Wingfield cited as providing important insights into the additional labor for employees of color to support these diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. And they must continue to do the work to make sure these voices continue to be included in workplace practices. Doing the work is important. And having organizations foster the resiliency of the employees doing the work, and to sustain the programs, are essential ingredients to create more inclusive workplaces. The recent review into #racism at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) shows what can define a culturally unsafe workplace. "Structural racism manifests in white Australians having the power – to decide whose stories are told, how they are told and who’s allowed to tell them," Giri Sivaraman கிரி சிவராமன், Race Discrimination Commissioner. "We need inclusive and nuanced storytelling which amplifies the voice of Australians from all backgrounds in a culturally safe environment. "Responsible reporting that is built on #racialliteracy is essential for creating a society that celebrates the rich tapestry which makes up the Australian fabric." The Guardian But are we really shocked? Many workplaces proudly wave the flag of #DEI with diverse faces and #tokenistic inclusion strategies, but miss the fundamental point of #culturalsafety. 🌡Here's a very basic litmus test for employers: 👉🏾 Is diversity present at all levels? E.g. board, leadership team, middle management etc? 👉🏾 Do diverse individuals feel safe to raise their voices and are they heard? 👉🏾 Are diverse individuals making decisions? #antiracism #transformativeDEI #diversityofvoices #diversityofdecisionmaking

We often hear that we are in a post racial world. Race and racism are not about biological or scientific constructs as we know them but they continue to have real operation and effect in Australia. They are about power and privilege. In the media, if you are white, you have the power to decide who tells stories, which stories are told and how they are told. Racism is the privilege of always being centered without it even being noticed. In the Australian media, whiteness is the default so racism is denied or ignored, and never confronted. The findings of covert, overt and structural racism at the ABC reflect a broader structural problem with racism in the media, that needs serious rectification. I write about it for the Guardian today. Tomorrow, Media Diversity Australia and the Australian Human Rights Commission will be launching a Race Reporting Handbook which is a timely resource in our current climate.
