🚤 Sulmara's USV provided geophysical survey for Bayou Bend CCS 🎯 Subsea specialist Sulmara has helped Bayou Bend CCS, joint venture owned by Chevron, Talos Energy and Equinor, unearth the “best data we’ve seen” from an uncrewed surface vessel (USV) during a high-resolution geophysical survey at the Bayou Bend carbon capture and storage project in Texas, USA. Bayou Bend CCS commissioned Sulmara to conduct an archaeological and geohazard assessment of the proposed Bayou Bend pipeline route from the landfall to the future offshore platform locations, which has the potential to reduce emissions from regional industrial facilities by safely storing carbon dioxide underground. Sulmara utilised an Ocean Power Technologies electric WAM-V 16 USV for the offshore data acquisition to help significantly lower the overall carbon footprint of the project by reducing the number of diesel-burning vessels offshore, as well as shortening the time required to conduct the survey. 🎤 Sulmara Project Manager Darius Rivera, PMP, PMI-ACP said, “The quality of the data gathered is some of the best we’ve seen from a USV. That quality of information, as well as the operability of the equipment and relationship that has been developed, have been key to the project’s success.” The collaborative project utilized the SpaceX-backed Starlink satellite system to ensure strong communications between the shore and the USV, allowing the Scotland-based company to push the technology further than ever before. 🎤 Darius Rivera, PMP, PMI-ACP added: “With the survey area around 15km from shore, we integrated the WAM-V with Starlink to achieve higher speed communications with the mobile remote command centre. This is the first time we have been able to go beyond the 3km mark with this size USV, ensuring improved quality of data and reducing the time needed to collect the information when compared to a conventional survey vessel.” 🎤 Andy Nicol, Regional Director for the Western Hemisphere at Sulmara, said: “We are proud to partner with Bayou Bend CCS on this important project. 🌊 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐔𝐇𝐑𝐒 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚? Ultra-High Resolution Seismic (UHRS) surveys have become a standard in Offshore Wind Farm development. UHRS data often has a high-frequency range of 2000 to 10000 Hz, significantly higher than conventional seismic frequencies of 125 to 250 Hz. The primary objective of acquiring UHRS data is to achieve seismic image resolutions of less than 1 meter, which is crucial for effective wind farm development. To achieve such detailed resolution requires meticulous processing of UHRS data. One critical processing step is de-ghosting, which attenuates ghost reflections caused by downward reflections from the sea surface. This processing step has a significant impact on the final seismic image resolution. The improvements in image resolution post de-ghosting are substantial, as demonstrated in this comparison. The achieved frequency spectrum has reached the highest level of similar products in the world. 🌐 Announcing a Significant Milestone in Subsea Environmental Monitoring   We are delighted to share the successful installation of the SMART Wet Demonstration prototype, a joint endeavor by Güralp Systems Ltd and INGV. This achievement marks a major milestone for the SMART Subsea Cable Initiative.   🌏 The InSEA Wet Demo cable was installed last month and is currently operational delivering high quality data. Inside the three in-line repeater pressure cases is advanced seismic monitoring technology, including force feedback accelerometers and seismometers. An accurate imaging of the subsurface conditions is an important prerequisite for the planning and development of offshore wind farms (OWF). Safety, of course, is paramount. All the people who go out on the vessel have undergone sea survival training beforehand. In the upcoming weeks geophysical data will be acquired. IWES is in charge of the acquisition, processing and preliminary interpretation of Ultra-High Resolution Multichannel Seismic data. We are delighted to announce the release of an updated IOGP Report, written by the Geomatics Committee. IOGP Report 483-6 - IOGP P6/11 Seismic bin grid data exchange format – technical specification Seismic data provides a fundamental input to exploration, appraisal, and production decisions, minimizing risk, optimizing well locations, and managing reservoirs through 4D technology. The IOGP P6/11 format is used industry-wide to provide the geodetic definition and geometry of the binning grid on which a 3D seismic survey is based. With seismic survey costs reaching hundreds of millions of dollars, and positioning elements contributing some 25% of this cost, maintaining spatial integrity is critical to safeguarding the value of the seismic data. This specification provides that safeguard through a highly structured tool for delivery and semi-automated quality control. This new version integrates industry experience and innovation from recent years and aligns the format with the latest advances in geodesy.
