The Ladies behind Ladies on the Track Our first LinkedIn post is here! Meet te Ladies behind Ladies on the Track. We are two passionate Dutch students, Kim de Jong and Kelsey van Paridon, who share an interest in racing. Our study, International Sports Management at De Haagse Hogeschool / The Hague University of Applied Sciences connected us and made our shared interests and opinions known. That is how we found out that we share the opinion that women are underrepresented in motorsports. Even though more people acknowledge the talent of these women, there is still not enough exposure and acknowledgement. We want to change this! On the track, in the pits and next to the track, we at Ladies on the Track aim to represent all the women in the motorsport to tell their stories. So, we share blogs, updates and stories about female drivers and “behind the scene” women. We want to provide a platform where everyone is welcome and informed. Being underrepresented is one of the many problems women in the racing world experience. But, the lack of exposure is one thing we can contribute to. Well, according to The Female Quotient, a whopping 40% of F1 fans are women, contributing to a staggering total viewership of 1.5 billion during the 2022 season! Charlotte Tilbury Beauty recognized the untapped potential and immense following of female fans in motorsports, and they've stepped into the fast lane to support and elevate female talent in this male-dominated space. There were two significant announcements last week with regards to sponsorship of female drivers, further underlining the opportunities that brands are seeing in supporting women in motorsport. In the US, it was revealed that Katherine Legge will take to the track for her fourth Indy 500 at the end of May with Dale Coyne Racing, backed by E.L.F. BEAUTY as her primary sponsor. Having supported Legge in a smaller capacity in the past, this will represent the first time a beauty brand has served as the primary sponsor of a driver in the Indy 500 in the race's 100+ year history. On the domestic UK motorsport scene, Porsche Sprint Challenge GB driver Caitlin Wood will be supported by Mattel, Inc.'s Barbie during the 2024 season. As well as carrying the brand on her car's livery, the partnership will see ten young girls invited to each race weekend, with Caitlin also due to visit schools and universities to promote careers in STEM. These announcements, alongside the groundbreaking Charlotte Tilbury Beauty partnership in F1 Academy, not only show the growing appetite of brands to support women in motorsport, but also how increased female participation can open up new commercial opportunities for the sport with non-endemic brands. For many years, writing about women involved in motorsport was not an easy task simply because there weren't that many outside of PR. And while most in the sport globally were focussing only on the drivers, Australia was moving to a different beat. Thankfully we moved past concerns over hotels rooms and how to accommodate women in our little world. Now we have two female engineers leading cars or teams on the grid and a growing number of engineers and mechanics, and surely more will follow. Well done to all the pioneers and the leaders who embraced change. If I have missed any great women or teams that deserve to be recognised, tag them in the comments if you like. I don't have everyone on my LinkedIn, and strangely, some don't even seem to be here. I used to be involved in a group known as Women in Sport Enterprise Foundation, and its role was to promote female participation in all aspect of sport from competing to the backroom. I did reach out to some people to get support to try and create some motorsport pathways primarily for drivers, but more specifically for ways to get female-led and female focussed businesses into motorsport. I got zero response, which was sad, and I am happy to talk with anyone who reads this if they have ideas. I still believe with the right support I could get one of our talented female drivers into either Supercars or F1 depending on where their interest lies. My theory has always been that if my daughter wants to play sport, she should not have to do bikini shoots to fund it. But equally as importantly, if she wants to work as a data engineer or fabricator, she can do that too without harassment. Sadly that is still not possible, as you can see in F1 at the moment. Meet Rajnie Kaur Uppal, Senior Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager at McLaren Racing 🏎️🧡 Earlier this year, Rajnie took a thrilling leap into motor racing, driven by a newfound passion for the sport. With a background in Government and Financial Services, Rajnie’s interest began during her teens when she saw her sister excel in the same industry. “Seeing her thrive as a woman of colour in a male-dominated field showed me that there was space for me too,” she recalls. Rajnie has always been passionate about creating equitable opportunities for underrepresented groups, and now, as Senior Manager of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the Sustainability team at McLaren Racing, she’s responsible for building accessible pathways into motorsport, ensuring inclusive policies, diversifying the team, and fostering a culture of belonging 🙌 For McLaren Racing, setting the standard for high performance in sport doesn’t end on the track but includes social and environmental sustainability. DE&I is one of McLaren’s four key pillars when it comes to sustainability and has set itself the ambition of 40% of its people coming from underrepresented backgrounds by 2030. Rajnie’s days are varied, from planning and delivering DE&I events to collaborating with the communications and social media teams in crafting impactful messages, as well as analysing data to refine DE&I strategies. “Whether it’s working with our fantastic Engage Alliance partners or engaging with the team to promote inclusivity, each day offers a new challenge and the chance to make an impact”, she tells us. Motorsport careers are exclusively for men… We didn't think so either!🏎️ Did you know that the percentage of women working in engineering and technical roles in Formula 1 teams has been gradually increasing. As of 2023, women now make up about 12% of the engineering workforce in Formula 1 teams, up from approximately 8% in 2016. This growth reflects ongoing efforts to encourage diversity and inclusion in the industry, with programs specifically aimed at inspiring young women to pursue careers in motorsport engineering and related fields. It’s International Women’s Day today, and it also marks the start of another Formula One race weekend!   What do these two things have in common?   Formula One has traditionally been a male-dominated sport. Maria Teresa de Filippis, the first woman to compete in a Formula One World Championship Grand Prix in the 1950s, was allegedly once told that “The only helmet a woman should wear is the one at the hairdresser's.”   Speeding ahead to 2024, we’ve seen efforts made to make the sport a more diverse and inclusive one. We now have the F1 Academy (an all-female racing series), led by Susie Wolff (a former professional racer herself), which provides aspiring young female racers with training and the experience to progress up the single-seater ladder.   So while I never had dreams of being a race car driver (I can barely ride a bicycle in a straight line so let’s be realistic here), inclusivity and representation matters. In an alternate world, that representation could’ve made the difference in inspiring a younger me to be a racer. Or an architect. Or an aerospace engineer.   If I could time travel, I’d tell my younger self that life is an open road and that she can forge her path ahead any which way she chooses. I’d tell her to embrace people from different backgrounds with different perspectives, for they’d enrich and broaden her worldviews. I’d tell her to be that role model, that representation that she wanted to see, and to strive to create an environment where people feel included, respected, and valued, wherever she goes.   As James Vowles, Team Principal of the Williams Racing team, said, “The best ideas don’t come from being a closed group of individuals.
