🏁 If you talk about #sports, motorsports won't always feature at the top of the conversation. From my point of view motorsport is comparable to many other sports with the added variable of the vehicle. Material and technology is part of many other sports (e.g. Cycling, bobsleigh, biathlon or even swimming) but within motorsports technology and material has a clearly visible and high impact on performance. 🏍️ The #MotoGP race in Jerez this past weekend delivered heart-stopping moments and intense battles on the track. It was the reigning champion Francesco (Pecco) Bagnaia who took victory after a fierce battle with the eight-time world Champion Marc Marquez. The last few laps were incredible and showcased motorsports in its purest form. Given the fact that Marquez rides the last years Ducati in a private team compared to Pecco riding for the Ducati factory team with the newest specification of the 2024 bike it will be exciting to see whether Marquez will be able to win and outweigh the potential disadvantage of an year old bike. Nevertheless, the visceral experience of watching these fearless riders push the limits of man and machine is unmatched. At the finish line the gap was only 0.372 seconds between the two contenders. ⏳ I am excited to see what the recent acquisition of the MotoGP through Liberty Media will bring to the series. Liberty Media have shown that they are able to expand the reach and excitement of a motorsport series globally. Their success with Formula 1 is proven but as a petrol head I must admit that the modern Formula 1 is drifting into a direction that is not in my favour. Don't get me wrong, I love Formula 1 - the precision engineering, the strategic prowess, the glitz and glamour—it's all part of what makes F1 so captivating. But there's something about the raw, unbridled passion of MotoGP that sets my pulse racing like nothing else. 🤔 I am curious to find out if there will be a change within the next year in viewership and the fanbase of MotoGP. Aero war intensifying? Our Ducati MotoGP launch takeaways https://lnkd.in/e_uCerYR With Ducati Corse’s notoriously secretive boss Gigi Dall’Igna unlikely to give away too many engineering secrets ahead of the start of 2024 MotoGP pre-season testing, and no changes to the rider line-up or main sponsors, Ducati’s launch event at Italian ski resort Madonna di Campiglio wasn’t expected to produce many earth-shattering revelations. But there were still things to be gleaned after reigning world champion Pecco Bagnaia and his team-mate Enea Bastianini pulled the covers off a machine that at least has changed a little bit visually from last year and - surprise, surprise - features even more red paint than before. Perhaps the most exciting news of the whole launch came in almost a throwaway line from Dall’Igna. He casually mentioned that the bike that actually hits the track at Sepang next month will feature “fairings extremely different to those we’ve used before”. And that means that there’s likely a serious escalation in MotoGP’s aerodynamics war in the pipeline. It’s an area that was basically invented by Dall’Igna’s team and which has since been consistently driven forward by Ducati not just through wings on the front of the bike but with new innovations like rear seat unit aero devices and ground effect fairings. But we’ve not seen any huge aero leap forward from Ducati in a few years, with the other European manufacturers Aprilia and KTM quick to catch up. That could change for 2024, if the veteran engineer’s words are to be taken at face value. The upgrade certainly wasn’t on show at the launch, with the bike on show a 2023 model (at least aerodynamically) in what was clearly a deliberate decision to ensure rivals have as little time as possible to study and copy whatever Ducati has in mind.

Dall'Igna: MotoGP concessions allow rivals to make mistakes Ducati can't make https://lnkd.in/e6_YxHSG On the 10th anniversary of his arrival at the Bolognese company, the engineer has been accumulating influence, in his team and in the championship, to the point of being seen by many as the Adrian Newey of the competition. After breaking most records last season, Ducati will face 2024 in full strength and with the extra asset of Marc Marquez, who has given up the last year of the million-dollar contract that linked him to Honda, to ride one of Dall'Igna's bikes. Luigi Dall'Igna spoke to Motorsport.com just a week before the start of the Ducati presentation events, which this year will compete for its third MotoGP title, the fourth in the history of the Borgo Panigale brand. Q. Many people compare you to Adrian Newey, the head of Red Bull's technical department in Formula 1, because of the influence you have in MotoGP. However, with your bikes it's not just one rider who wins, but many. Does that put you on a higher plane? LD: That's impossible. Newey is a legend. Just the fact that someone compares me to him is enough to satisfy me. But cars and motorbikes are two completely different universes. Q. Concessions can be a great help, as long as you are aware of what you have to change. Do you think Yamaha and Honda know that? LD: The big difference is that they have the possibility to make mistakes and fix them. For example, with the engine, which they can open and modify. We don't. Those who have the concessions can go back with the engine if they have a problem. We have to finish the championship with the engine we homologated at the start. That's why we have to be much more conservative. It's not just a question of testing, it's a question of being able to take a lot more risks. They, in terms of aerodynamics, have one more upgrade than us. If we get it wrong, we have a problem. Q. What factors made you stay at Ducati and not accept the challenge Honda offered you? LD: It has cost us a lot to get here. We didn't win the world championship from one year to the next. It would have been completely stupid to give up on a situation as positive on a technical level as the one that surrounds me now at Ducati. The team I have around me is wonderful, both from a technical and human point of view. At Ducati it's great. It's a place where you can talk, discuss. It's not easy to give up this sweet thing.

Ducati can't have #1 on a satellite MotoGP bike next year https://lnkd.in/dsisAz3d With three rounds of the 2023 MotoGP world championship remaining, there’s a very real possibility that Pramac Ducati rider Jorge Martin will steal the title away from factory counterpart Pecco Bagnaia and run the number one plate on his satellite machine next year - an awkward situation that the Italian factory simply cannot afford to allow to happen. Right now, with three rounds and 111 points remaining on the table this year, Martin trails Bagnaia by only 13 points - a gap that his impressive momentum of late (especially in sprint races) has a very real possibility of turning around come the season finale at Valencia in only three weeks’ time. Should that happen, though, it will leave Ducati in a whole world of pain come next season, as it will need to manage not only the commercial realities of having a satellite world champion but also the egos of its riders - an issue which, realistically, might force its hands in making a big change for next season whether Martin wins or loses. There’s a lot that comes with winning a title beyond just lifting the trophy at the final round and being forced to do more media appearances in the week that follows. Walk into any Ducati dealership anywhere in the world right now, for example, and you’re guaranteed to find a photograph or poster of current world champion Bagnaia, as Ducati both uses its title success to sell bikes and to maximise the return on investment from its sponsors. It doesn’t just become far more difficult to do that should the champion not be fully under the control of factory press officers and marketers - it’s also a bad look for major multinational sponsors like oil giant Shell or technology company Lenovo if the world champion isn’t on the bike they pay millions to sponsor but instead is hanging out in the pit box next door.
