Western Massachusetts Fibershed is working on a way to turn “waste” wool that farmers are not currently using into a value-added product, and they need your help! Donate to their GoFundMe for a wool pellitzer, which turns waste that would other be thrown away (seriously) and makes them into an excellent, sustainable soil amendment. https://gofund.me/efbb7f93 The NPK value is in the 9-1-4 range, the pellets help prevent soil compaction, and they retain moisture in the soil. Oregon’s amazing land use program has slowed the sprawl onto this nonrenewable resource for 50 years, but we’ve still paved tens of thousands of acres - including much of our best soils. Between 2017-2022, Oregon lost 660,000 acres, about 4% of its ag land. Worms! 🪱 Could these slimy creatures be the winning solution to a problem? Potentially. Ten of our team are competing in this year’s Winnovators, a global competition run by the not-for-profit WaterAid . The competition has two parts - to raise money for WaterAid and come up with a solution to this year’s problem 👉 the need for improved sanitation in Papua New Guinea’s coastal communities. The team has started strong with their fundraising thanks to a sausage sizzle and a trivia night, with the aim of raising a whopping $10,000 for WaterAid. Now, back to the worms. Homes in Papua New Guinea are built on stilts over the ocean and toilets empty directly into the sea. The team is looking at ways to capture and treat waste in an innovative way. Their idea uses worms to break down waste, turning it into organic compost and recycled water. They chose this challenge 'cos they can help the community and the environment at the same time. Last year’s team ended up taking out the winning spot. In Africa, climate-related disasters such as droughts and floods have more than doubled since the early 1990s, harming agricultural productivity and reducing access to food. People in rural communities rely heavily on agriculture, with their well-being closely tied to the natural environment. This means that the 12 million people in communities working with The Hunger Project are extremely vulnerable to weather events, reinforcing the importance of building resilience to climate change. To mitigate the effects of climate change on farmers we run Food Security and Agriculture training in rural communities to adopt climate-resilient, sustainable farming practices to enhance agricultural productivity.
