As an awards body, we don't just look to celebrate others doing great things; we want to ensure we're doing what we can to 'walk the talk' too. One of the ways we do this is by supporting the amazing work of Cool Earth: - we donate 1% of all turnover from sponsorship, entry fees and ticket sales, - we give a £5 donation per paid entry via their clever CarbonCork initiative - we help to protect rainforest canopies via their carbon capture projects, to match the emissions from our event that we aren’t able to remove. We're delighted that we can play this small part in helping Cool Earth to work with communities from the Amazon to Papua New Guinea in finding creative solutions to rainforest protection - solutions that reduce deforestation rates by up to 82%. In the Amazon, where illegal mining threatens lives and nature, a community has started sustainable fish farming. This project is not only providing food but also offering an economic alternative to practices that destroy rainforest. It shows how supporting local ideas can address global challenges. Meanwhile, in Papua New Guinea, a water and sanitation project is having rainforest-saving benefits. Health centres are seeing fewer patients, showing how basic improvements can have a big impact on people's health and the environment. On April 17th, part of Heza Washing Station was taken out by a major landslide. Surrounding communities were impacted as well, an estimated over 400 homes have been destroyed. ⁠ ⁠ When we built Heza, the government coffee board said we must be crazy that this site would act as a micro station. However, our team used our core value of Mwangaza and created a community-centered station that is thriving and producing some of the finest coffees in Africa. ⁠ ⁠ There are many players that feel the impact from devastation, and as a buyer, you might be curious about its implications for you or why it matters. ⁠ ⁠Rest assured, our team quickly came up with a solution for cherry reception so we’re still receiving them at Heza. A landslide can definitely slow logistics temporarily, but we’re still operating as normal.⁠ ⁠ The reality is that climate change is becoming more prevalent across coffee-growing nations every single year, directly impacting the coffee industry. Too little rain means insufficient water supply for tree growth, too much rain means landslides and floods that take out entire plantations and operations. ⁠ ⁠ We value providing quality coffee, and we’re certain you do as well. In 2023 we made a difference with our Treevolution initiative. We ran 12 eco-missions, planted trees, protected hedgehogs, walked many kilometres, and raised close to £10,000 through both our 10k for 10k trees and MaDD23 sponsored events. This has resulted in a bumper year for our initiative as we have planted almost 5,500 trees with our partners at the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and National Forest Foundation. This brings our Treevolution total to a whopping 16,987 trees planted so far, and we have ambitious plans to hit our target of 25,000 trees by the end of 2024. #sustainability #inspiration #transformation

With 'National Workplace Wellbeing Day' in mind - the idea of combining carbon sequestration, promoting biodiversity, increasing the nutrient-density of our food, and reducing the use of pesticides and herbicides seems like a logical step in the right direction.

We need wildfire reform and better forest management practices in BC. The McDougall Creek fire did not need to happen; excess red tape & bureaucracy, unwillingness to work with local experts, and mismanagement is what caused the fire to get out of control. Wildfires need to be put out rapidly and forests need to be managed effectively. An incredible group of locals, including several Registered Professional Foresters, are looking to make a documentary highlighting how we can turn the dial and bring health and prosperity back to our forest and prevent wildfires from devastating our province. It's about the environment, preservation, sustainability, and even economic stability. For our forests, and for our future. In Africa, climate-related disasters such as droughts and floods have more than doubled since the early 1990s, harming agricultural productivity and reducing access to food. People in rural communities rely heavily on agriculture, with their well-being closely tied to the natural environment. This means that the 12 million people in communities working with The Hunger Project are extremely vulnerable to weather events, reinforcing the importance of building resilience to climate change. To mitigate the effects of climate change on farmers we run Food Security and Agriculture training in rural communities to adopt climate-resilient, sustainable farming practices to enhance agricultural productivity.
