Worms! 🪱 Could these slimy creatures be the winning solution to a problem? Potentially. Ten of our team are competing in this year’s Winnovators, a global competition run by the not-for-profit WaterAid . The competition has two parts - to raise money for WaterAid and come up with a solution to this year’s problem 👉 the need for improved sanitation in Papua New Guinea’s coastal communities. The team has started strong with their fundraising thanks to a sausage sizzle and a trivia night, with the aim of raising a whopping $10,000 for WaterAid. Now, back to the worms. Homes in Papua New Guinea are built on stilts over the ocean and toilets empty directly into the sea. The team is looking at ways to capture and treat waste in an innovative way. Their idea uses worms to break down waste, turning it into organic compost and recycled water. They chose this challenge 'cos they can help the community and the environment at the same time. Last year’s team ended up taking out the winning spot. But, let's face it, when you’re creating this much positive social and environmental change, every team is a winner 🏆 #WaterIndustry #Challenge #Fundraising #Environment #Teamwork #Wastewater #Innovation #ProblemSolving #Solutions

As an awards body, we don't just look to celebrate others doing great things; we want to ensure we're doing what we can to 'walk the talk' too. One of the ways we do this is by supporting the amazing work of Cool Earth: - we donate 1% of all turnover from sponsorship, entry fees and ticket sales, - we give a £5 donation per paid entry via their clever CarbonCork initiative - we help to protect rainforest canopies via their carbon capture projects, to match the emissions from our event that we aren’t able to remove. We're delighted that we can play this small part in helping Cool Earth to work with communities from the Amazon to Papua New Guinea in finding creative solutions to rainforest protection - solutions that reduce deforestation rates by up to 82%. In the Amazon, where illegal mining threatens lives and nature, a community has started sustainable fish farming. This project is not only providing food but also offering an economic alternative to practices that destroy rainforest. It shows how supporting local ideas can address global challenges. Meanwhile, in Papua New Guinea, a water and sanitation project is having rainforest-saving benefits. Health centres are seeing fewer patients, showing how basic improvements can have a big impact on people's health and the environment. You can read all the updates here (and THANK YOU, Cool Earth, for everything you're doing 💚 ) >> https://lnkd.in/giaiC-Qt

On April 17th, part of Heza Washing Station was taken out by a major landslide. Surrounding communities were impacted as well, an estimated over 400 homes have been destroyed. When we built Heza, the government coffee board said we must be crazy that this site would act as a micro station. However, our team used our core value of Mwangaza and created a community-centered station that is thriving and producing some of the finest coffees in Africa. There are many players that feel the impact from devastation, and as a buyer, you might be curious about its implications for you or why it matters. Rest assured, our team quickly came up with a solution for cherry reception so we’re still receiving them at Heza. A landslide can definitely slow logistics temporarily, but we’re still operating as normal. The reality is that climate change is becoming more prevalent across coffee-growing nations every single year, directly impacting the coffee industry. Too little rain means insufficient water supply for tree growth, too much rain means landslides and floods that take out entire plantations and operations. We value providing quality coffee, and we’re certain you do as well. Your support can make a real difference in ensuring the sustainability of the coffee supply chain. By working together to innovate and adapt, farmers can grow and harvest the coffee that the world enjoys—and together, we can ensure a continued supply of exceptional coffee. Head to this link to donate to our fundraiser to help repair the damage from the landslide: —— #SpecialtyCoffee #GreenCoffee #CoffeeProducer #AfricanSpecialtyCoffee

In 2023 we made a difference with our Treevolution initiative. We ran 12 eco-missions, planted trees, protected hedgehogs, walked many kilometres, and raised close to £10,000 through both our 10k for 10k trees and MaDD23 sponsored events. This has resulted in a bumper year for our initiative as we have planted almost 5,500 trees with our partners at the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and National Forest Foundation. This brings our Treevolution total to a whopping 16,987 trees planted so far, and we have ambitious plans to hit our target of 25,000 trees by the end of 2024. #sustainability #inspiration #transformation

Land has a visceral power. There is an alchemy in the ability of minerals, microbes, and organic matter to transform into food, clothing, and shelter. While less than 2% of Americans are farmers, we all participate in this magic every time we eat or wear a sweater or sleep under a roof. But the soil that makes this possible is under threat. Oregon’s amazing land use program has slowed the sprawl onto this nonrenewable resource for 50 years, but we’ve still paved tens of thousands of acres - including much of our best soils. Between 2017-2022, Oregon lost 660,000 acres, about 4% of its ag land. Become an OAT Cultivator today and join a special group of Oregonians committed to protecting agricultural land for generations to come. Your monthly contribution helps ensure working lands remain “For Ag. Forever” across our beloved state. There’s never been a better time to become a monthly Cultivator - all donations up to $5,000 will be generously matched by Land O'Lakes, Inc.! https://lnkd.in/d_YunMwz

A world of fundraising experience (30+ years in 100+ countries) to guide your fundraising journey. Strategy, Innovation, Mentoring, and Training.
USD800,000. Raised by and for a community-owned sustainable forestry nonprofit in #PapuaNewGuinea. From one progressive European trust. The (relatively) smooth and stress-less process of a TWO-PAGE proposal. A first donation that's NOT from an institutional funder. But that wouldn't have been possible without having walked through the institutional funding fire (for two decades). And a two-year journey to grow beyond the habits and limited expectations that institutional funding shapes. #highvaluepartnerships

With 'National Workplace Wellbeing Day' in mind - the idea of combining carbon sequestration, promoting biodiversity, increasing the nutrient-density of our food, and reducing the use of pesticides and herbicides seems like a logical step in the right direction.

We need wildfire reform and better forest management practices in BC. The McDougall Creek fire did not need to happen; excess red tape & bureaucracy, unwillingness to work with local experts, and mismanagement is what caused the fire to get out of control. Wildfires need to be put out rapidly and forests need to be managed effectively. An incredible group of locals, including several Registered Professional Foresters, are looking to make a documentary highlighting how we can turn the dial and bring health and prosperity back to our forest and prevent wildfires from devastating our province. It's about the environment, preservation, sustainability, and even economic stability. For our forests, and for our future. Please watch this trailer and consider donating to make this vision a reality! https://lnkd.in/gzUs6EWu

In Africa, climate-related disasters such as droughts and floods have more than doubled since the early 1990s, harming agricultural productivity and reducing access to food. People in rural communities rely heavily on agriculture, with their well-being closely tied to the natural environment. This means that the 12 million people in communities working with The Hunger Project are extremely vulnerable to weather events, reinforcing the importance of building resilience to climate change. To mitigate the effects of climate change on farmers we run Food Security and Agriculture training in rural communities to adopt climate-resilient, sustainable farming practices to enhance agricultural productivity. From 18th - 25th of April, every pound you donate through @BigGive will be matched. This means your donation will have twice the impact, offering twice the support to those who need it most.
