Land has a visceral power. There is an alchemy in the ability of minerals, microbes, and organic matter to transform into food, clothing, and shelter. While less than 2% of Americans are farmers, we all participate in this magic every time we eat or wear a sweater or sleep under a roof. But the soil that makes this possible is under threat. Oregon’s amazing land use program has slowed the sprawl onto this nonrenewable resource for 50 years, but we’ve still paved tens of thousands of acres - including much of our best soils. Between 2017-2022, Oregon lost 660,000 acres, about 4% of its ag land. Become an OAT Cultivator today and join a special group of Oregonians committed to protecting agricultural land for generations to come. Your monthly contribution helps ensure working lands remain “For Ag. Forever” across our beloved state. There’s never been a better time to become a monthly Cultivator - all donations up to $5,000 will be generously matched by Land O'Lakes, Inc.! https://lnkd.in/d_YunMwz

With 'National Workplace Wellbeing Day' in mind - the idea of combining carbon sequestration, promoting biodiversity, increasing the nutrient-density of our food, and reducing the use of pesticides and herbicides seems like a logical step in the right direction.

🌱🐔 Empowering Future Generations through Family Farming! 🌟👨👩👧👦 I couldn't be prouder to share the incredible journey of my family's involvement in Hydro Coops farming! Each of my amazing kids tends to 3 Hydro Coops, while Lize Marie leads the charge with an impressive 6 Coops. Together, they're making a profound impact on both our local community and the agricultural landscape. 🌾🚜 🐣🌿 In just six weeks, our family farm produces a staggering 2250 broiler chickens, securing a profit exceeding R140,000. But our mission goes beyond profits; it's about giving back. Every month, we're honored to donate over 6000 eggs and more than 5000 fresh vegetables to support local communities in need. 🥚🥕 Through Hydro Coops, we've not only found a sustainable source of income but also a platform for meaningful contribution. We often have two choices. One - Do nothing (Ex. Yard work, going to the gym). Two - Try to do something. Anything. In this case, I'm going with #2. I have been inspired by 4 outstanding change-makers. Each of them possess insightful knowledge and raw passion for forestry. They are mostly retired but still want to have an active role in aiding BC forests. I am often not the smartest guy in the room but I recognize good ideas when I hear them. Each of them has brought proven ideas to forest fire mitigation. Ideas that would have a demonstrative effect on forest fires in this province. A small team wants to bring these ideas to light (See #2). We can with your help. Watch the documentary trailer below and see if more perspectives and ideas would help us with a problem that is seemingly beyond any organizations control. Or send to someone who you think can help. Please understand. This is not criticism of the brave people who fight fires every year. This is about an opportunity to rethink our policies and processes proactively. Instead of reactive. The greatest organizations are constantly in search of more information to make themselves and the people within - better. I am sure the people who create policy around forest fire mitigation think the same. Nobody has all the answers. But maybe a small group of retired foresters who have over 100 years of knowledge between them can offer some evidence-based solutions from around the world so we have a brighter future for BC. #forestfires #documentary #BCforests #solutionsbased #dosomething #fundraising #Mcdougallcreekfire #westkelowna2023

Worms! 🪱 Could these slimy creatures be the winning solution to a problem? Potentially. Ten of our team are competing in this year’s Winnovators, a global competition run by the not-for-profit WaterAid . The competition has two parts - to raise money for WaterAid and come up with a solution to this year’s problem 👉 the need for improved sanitation in Papua New Guinea’s coastal communities. The team has started strong with their fundraising thanks to a sausage sizzle and a trivia night, with the aim of raising a whopping $10,000 for WaterAid. Now, back to the worms. Homes in Papua New Guinea are built on stilts over the ocean and toilets empty directly into the sea. The team is looking at ways to capture and treat waste in an innovative way. Their idea uses worms to break down waste, turning it into organic compost and recycled water. They chose this challenge 'cos they can help the community and the environment at the same time. Last year’s team ended up taking out the winning spot. But, let's face it, when you’re creating this much positive social and environmental change, every team is a winner 🏆 #WaterIndustry #Challenge #Fundraising #Environment #Teamwork #Wastewater #Innovation #ProblemSolving #Solutions

Exciting News! We’re launching a new fundraising campaign, and we’d love for you to be part of it: Help us plant 10 million wildflowers by June 30th. We’re seeing an incredibly high amount of interest from landowners interested in planting #pollinator habitat, and we need your help to make it a success. By helping us plant 10 million #wildflowers across the landscape, you are making a real difference for these #pollinators. Your donation will: 🌱Plant 1 million square feet of high-quality NextGen pollinator habitat projects through our Seed A Legacy and Solar Synergy programs. 🐝 Provide essential nutrition to support #honeybees, which are vital for our food production. 60 honey bee hives will be supported, which will produce over 4,200 lbs. of US honey. 🦋 Provide #monarchbutterfly-specific needs to prevent them from becoming endangered, including 100,000 milkweed seeds being planted within the pollinator habitat. 🌻 Provide ideal habitat for pollinators, native bees, pheasants, quail and grassland songbirds, improve soil, air and water quality, AND enhance #biodiversity while beautifying the landscape. Though I rarely post on Linkedin, I am here regularly, absorbing the insights of those I admire. I post now because The Ag Community in Vermont needs more from the companies, individuals, and associations who work here or have visited, benefitted, or simply appreciate Vermont values. We need folks to come to the aid of damaged Vermont’s farms. The catastrophic storms of 2023 and 'wrong' weather throughout the winter into spring this year caused and continues to cause more than $45 million in losses to Vermont family farms. The devastation done to these farms is largely invisible - crops lost, infrastructure damaged or destroyed, and seasons of set-backs. With ongoing, all-volunteer help from partners and supporters listed below, we're hoping to raise as much cash as we can to help offset the profound losses Vermont farmers have experienced. Learn more, share this post, AND make a donation to the farmers in the county you care about most at www.digdeepvt.com. Thank you, Vermont Community Fund, NOFA, and The State of Vermont for assistance provided to date. But it is simply not enough to ensure feed, crops to sell, infrastructure repair, and a viable future. Please. And thank you for those who are championing DIGDEEPVT now: @Ski Vermont/Vermont Ski Areas Association @Association of Vermont Credit Unions @Farm Credit East, ACA @Farrell Distributing @Driven Studio | Certified B Corporation® Studio | Certified B Corporation® @Image Relay | Certified B Corporation® @Unified Strategies Public Relations Network @Givio

Founded in 2016 with 78 members, the Kisoro Tree Growers and Timber Traders Cooperative Society Limited has tremendously grown with support from WWF. Under the WWF Finland funded Resilience for People and Biodiversity program. The cooperative activities and initiatives were boosted in 2021 with USD 8,000. This support has fueled exponential growth for the cooperative, improving both livelihoods and the environment. Silas Nizeyimana, the chairman of the cooperative, shared that with WWF's financial support, members gained access to loans through a revolving fund. "These loans have been injected into their tree growing and timber-related businesses. Members have been able to establish forests." WWF also donated a sawmill, enabling carpenters to obtain timber in the right sizes to expedite their work. Uniquely, the Kisoro cooperative incorporated carpenters, creating a business chain to the end user. Today, their revolving fund has grown to USD 15,000, and the group has planted 320 hectares of trees in Kisoro district since the program's inception. Members of the Cooperative use their Forest Value-chain assets e.g Nurseries, Woodlots, Workshops and Timber stock as collateral to borrow money from the cooperative.
