🚀 Exciting progress in European space technology! We recently held a productive workshop as part of our ongoing European space project, bringing together the Space USB consortium and our Advisory Board. The focus of this second session was twofold: 🔧 Finalizing the specifications for a universal, serial connector (similar to USB) capable of mechanically connecting two space elements and enabling data and power transfer once assembled in orbit. 💡 Debating the demonstration of prototypes in a laboratory environment. These prototypes will play a crucial role in advancing On-Orbit Servicing and assembly technologies. This marks a major step for our project milestones and towards enabling future space missions with modular, easily assembled components. We're excited about the collaborative effort driving this innovation forward! Thanks to our esteemed partners for their involvement and participation : Thales Alenia Space, Sener Aerospace & Defence, Space Applications Services NV/SA , iBOSS, Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI), In Extenso Innovation Croissance , SpaceLocker, Airbus Defence and Space, European Space Agency - ESA, OHB SE, German Aerospace Center (DLR). Stay tuned for more updates on this game-changing technology. 🌟 #SpaceTechnology #EuropeanInnovation #OnOrbitServicing #SpaceUSB #InnovationInSpace #HorizonEurope

"Following a year of testing, the German space agency DLR has validated that its miniaturized satellite laser ranging (SLR) solution is a realistic alternative to traditional solutions. With SLR, a ground station fires a laser beam in short pulses at a target satellite in orbit. The beam hits the target and is reflected back to be detected by the ground station. The distance between the ground station and the target can then be calculated precisely based on the time it took for the laser to travel the distance. Measurements from SLR systems are vital for fields like geodesy, the science of understanding the Earth’s geometric shape, orientation in space, and gravity field. Researchers use the precise measurements of satellite orbits to determine changes in Earth’s structure and rotation. Traditionally, SLR measurements were only possible with large ground stations equipped with powerful lasers, a telescope with a diameter of between 50 and 80 centimetres, and a team of operators. However, with its miniSLR project, DLR set out to change that."... European Spaceflight Read & learn more

ICYMI: U.S. DOT Highly Automated Systems Safety Center of Excellence Senior Scientist Sarasina Tuchen spoke last week at the AUVSI XPONENTIAL Show and shared the latest updates from the Advanced Air Mobility Interagency Working Group (AAM IWG). Sarasina joined a panel discussion with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Deputy in ARMD’s Mission Integration Office Nancy Mendonca; United States Air Force Sr. Technical Manager of Airspace Innovation and Prime Partnership Team John Sawyer; Federal Aviation Administration Acting Manager of Next Gen, Info-Centric NAS Operations and New Entrants Division Andras Kovacs; and moderator AFWERX & SpaceWERX Strategic Advisor Dyan Medina Gibbens. Some of our key takeaways from the discussion: 🗝 There is a need to continue this all-of-government, all-of-stakeholder approach, even after the AAM IWG report to Congress is delivered in fall of 2024. This can transform our transportation system to be more safe, equitable, and sustainable, and we need everyone to work together. 🗝 Public-Private Partnerships are important to scaling AAM operations and integrating them into a safe, multimodal transportation system of systems. 🗝 Community engagement, public trust, and education on AAM are the key enablers. 👉 Stay tuned for more updates on the AAM IWG’s progress and recommendations to Congress: https://lnkd.in/gJYaU6Tt AUVSI — Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International #XPO24 #transportation #safety #aam #aamiwg #tech #futureofflight #airtech #aviation
