The relationship between malnutrition, a weakened immune system, and TB infection in children poses a significant public health challenge in Delta Fly District, Western Province. Malnutrition impairs immune function, making children more susceptible to TB, while TB worsens malnutrition by increasing metabolic demands and reducing appetite. Effective management requires an all-inclusive approach that addresses both nutritional deficiencies and infectious disease aspects. This includes providing adequate nutrition, improving living conditions, ensuring early diagnosis and treatment of TB, and offering ongoing medical support. Such an integrated strategy is crucial to enhance health outcomes and reduce the burden of TB in vulnerable pediatric populations. Through our BEAN Project and our valued partners in the district – #DAL, #WPHA, and #ECPNG, together with our beneficiaries and Village Health Assistants (VHA), we are working closely to alleviate this issue for the most vulnerable children with much-appreciated funding support from the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP). Happy National Milk Day! As we celebrate, let's take a moment to acknowledge the nutritional benefits of milk and its significant role in our lives. It's crucial, however, to also be aware of potential health risks, especially when it comes to raw, unpasteurized milk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 127 outbreaks linked to raw milk from 1993 to 2012, resulting in 1,909 illnesses and 144 hospitalizations. Raw milk can harbor dangerous microorganisms like Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and Campylobacter, leading to serious foodborne illnesses. Individuals with weakened immune systems, children, older adults, and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable. Pregnant women, in particular, face serious risks of illnesses like Listeria, which can lead to miscarriage, illness, or death of the newborn. Developed by Louis Pasteur in 1864, pasteurization is a crucial process that kills harmful bacteria by heating milk to a specific temperature. This process has been instrumental in preventing diseases such as listeriosis, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, diphtheria, Q fever, and brucellosis. When in Doubt - Ask! Always read the label; safe milk will be labeled as "pasteurized." Don't hesitate to inquire about the pasteurization status when purchasing milk or milk products. Avoid buying from farmers' markets or roadside stands unless you can confirm pasteurization. DAY 6: HEPATITIS INSIGHTS AND FACTS Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) is an RNA virus of the Hepeviridae family under the genus Hepevirus. It is transmitted faeco-orally by consumption of contaminated water or food hence a common cause of outbreaks in communities with poor sanitation and unsafe water. Other transmission routes have been identified, which include transfusion with infected blood products and perinatal transmission from mother to child. Outbreaks and sporadic cases of hepatitis E occur around the world. These outbreaks frequently occur in resource-limited countries with inadequate access to safe water supply, sanitation, hygiene, essential health services, and may affect several hundred to several thousands of persons.
