Modernism, once a bold rebellion against convention, now faces its own reckoning. Has it failed us, or can we chart a renewed path forward? If we can collectively recognize the need for change, several aspects of modernism, as we currently practice them, may deserve reconsideration. The next century demands architecture that serves, inspires, and engages the heart. How can we be co-evolving with nature? Part 2 of the Regenerative Architecture Index, 'Co-evolving with nature', is about recognising that we are part of – as opposed to separate from – the natural world. It recognises the importance of actively regenerating #ecosystems by learning from and working with #naturalsystems. This requires designing for #circularity and encouraging closed-loop energy, material and water cycles. The responses were assessed by UK Architects Declare steering group members Anna Lisa McSweeney, Alasdair Ben Dixon and Craig Robertson, with expert input from RAI ambassador Phoebe Tickell – renegade scientist, systems thinker and social entrepreneur. Read on in the link below! https://lnkd.in/eeEiTiB9 #RegenerativeArchitectureIndex

The Silicon Fens are growing! Yesterday, Chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasised the importance of #NewTowns in the Oxford-Cambridge corridor, a vital area for the development of life sciences and biotech industries in the UK. We're very excited to be collaborating with the University of Cambridge on a masterplan for a new urban quarter, which will complete the development already started at Eddington. Did you know that Hawkins\Brown has a team of specialist masterplanners? Ably led by partner and urban design lead Darryl Chen, our masterplanning team is committed to creating complex, interconnected places that learn from and enhance natural systems. At the Eddington - North West Cambridge Development, we've proposed a series of compact neighbourhoods with copious open space and public realm. The David Rubenstein Treehouse Conference Center at Harvard University is celebrating its topping out. Once open, the center will serve as Harvard's first university-wide conference space and a gateway to its new Enterprise Research Campus (ERC). The conference center is highly sustainable, featuring mass timber in its design, and will serve as an innovation hub for the university. As part of the project team with Studio Gang, Consigli Construction Co., Inc./Smoot Construction Company of Washington DC, and Tishman Speyer, we provided a suite of multidisciplinary services and utilized the Arup SoundLab to help address critical needs around sound mitigation as this is an important feature for conference facilities. We are excited to be a part of this cutting-edge center that prioritizes sustainability and innovation - congratulations to the entire project team on this milestone. #Harvard #MassTimber #Design #HigherEd

Tomorrow, on Wednesday August 21st, Ellen Schindler will lecture at the Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory as part of the Aedes Democratic Design programme which explores how architecture and planning can evolve into collaborative, interdisciplinary spatial practices that strengthen democracy. Aedes on Democratic Design: "Working together for a future architecture by identifying strategies to bring architects and new partners together, to extract tools for successful collaboration and to discuss aims for a broader communication." What started with an idea for the graphic novel METRO O1O has now grown into the all-embracing concept of YOU – Young Optimistic Urbanists. Can we talk about the city in a different way? Do we need a new mindset to involve the younger generation in urban development? And how can we connect them more seriously, specifically and structurally in our cities' urban planning processes? Ellen will highlight how De Zwarte Hond aims to involve the younger generation city-dwellers in city-making, how we invite cities to embrace the YOU-manifesto and how brushing teeth has everything to do with urban planning. When: 21 August 2024 Time: 18.30-20.30 Where: ANCB The Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory, Christinenstraße 18-19, 10119 Berlin Entrance: Reserve your free ticket here https://lnkd.in/e3rdY3DJ #dezwartehond #architecture #strategy #urbanism #metro010 #berlin #citychangers #citymakers #graphicnovel #younggeneration #YoungOptimisticUrbanists #BerlinEvent #CollaborationForChange #DemocraticDesign #GlobalGovernance #ZEITStiftung #BuceriusSummerSchool #InterdisciplinaryDesign #DZHevents
Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory in Berlin is a unique interdisciplinary platform for urban exchange, exploring the interplay between built environment and social life for the future of our human habitat.
LAB TALK | DEMOCRATIC DESIGN: Collaboration as a Way Out of the Crisis. | Wednesday, 21 August 2024, 18:30 A Lab Talk within the frame of the Bucerius Summer School on Global Governance in collaboration with the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, Hamburg In times of profound transformation and uncertainties, harnessing collective resources through collaborative approaches is essential for fostering democratic values and social cohesion. New models of collaboration in politics and planning are emerging in many countries, while the rise of collectives and unconventional partnerships signals a new era of working together for common goals. Architecture, design and planning are fundamentally about collaboration, cooperation and compromise and therefore have the potential to strengthen democratic engagement and social unity, addressing the urgent need for interdisciplinary thinking and a people-centred approach. What actually constitutes a democratic society and how can we preserve the public sphere? How can governance and planning co-produce visions for the future? How do we deal with uncertainty? Can collaboration serve as a way out of crisis? Programme Welcome Hans-Jürgen Commerell_Director, Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory, Berlin Sascha Suhrke_Director, Head of Politics and Society, ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, Hamburg Presentations and Discussion Ellen Schindler, De Zwarte Hond, Groningen, Rotterdam, Köln, Berlin Elisabeth Broermann, Guest Professor, TU Berlin, Architects4Future Moderator: Eberhard Sandschneider, at Berlin Global Advisors, former Professor for Chinese Politics and International Relations at Otto-Suhr-Institute, FU Berlin More information at: https://lnkd.in/ezZrjn56 Please register here: https://lnkd.in/e-C7ur5M The talk is part of Aedes’ programme, Democratic Design, through which we explore how architecture and planning can evolve into collaborative, interdisciplinary spatial practices that strengthen our democracy. Currently, with a Call for Projects open until 31 August 2024, we are seeking submissions from across Europe to be featured in an exhibition and accompanying programme that explore the interrelationship between democratic processes and building practices. Fascinating research about evaluating the built environment. Why is this important? «Addressing disparities in the built environment is crucial to creating equitable, healthy, and livable communities. Key policy recommendations include conducting regular assessments to monitor street quality and develop strategies that promote equitable access to high-quality environments, establishing equitable policies and guidelines to mitigate green gentrification and resident displacement during streetscape improvements, encouraging community engagement in street design, investing in active transport infrastructure and prioritizing maintenance, promoting mixed-use development, and focusing on cost-effective interventions when managing limited financial resources.»
A new paper from our team on the equity of the built environment at the micro-scale in Montreal. This is part of Elitza Kraycheva supervised research project at McGill University she did shoot high in here with the help of Hisham Negm and Madhav Badami. The idea of this paper came when listing to a talk by Julian Agyeman, he is an inspiring speaker.
