A major milestone has been successfully achieved on schedule! The ESA FIRESPELL activity has successfully completed its Preliminary Design Review. The objective of FIRESPELL is to develop a unified particle radiation model for interplanetary missions that extends the European Specification modelling of solar energetic particles to energies down to 0.04 MeV and includes the contribution of Jovian electrons. For this purpose, a large volume of energetic electron and ion flux measurements from cornerstone European and US missions - such as Wind, ACE, SOHO, IMP8 and ARTEMIS - were evaluated, reprocessed, and calibrated. FIRESPELL is led by SPARC (GR) in partnership with the University of Athens (GR), the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (DE), the University of Barcelona (ES) and the Catholic University of Leuven (BE). The activity is funded by the European Space Agency under ESA Contract No. 4000142510/23/NL/CRS awarded by SPARC in response to the Open Invitation to Tender "Particle Radiation Modelling for interplanetary missions extending to low energies".

📢 #ATTRACTproject 📢   How do we improve thermal regulation in spacecraft? 🧐 The AHEAD project research team presented their latest advancements at ECSSMET 2024. Focusing on 3D-printed pipe segments with built-in sensing, heating, and energy harvesting, this technology aims to optimize temperature control in space and industrial refrigeration systems 🚀.   At the conference, Hervé Saudan, coordinator of the project, shared insights from the project’s design and testing process, including key protocols like thermal lifetime and leak testing 🔍.   “Sharing the results of our project has allowed us to identify an application that had not yet been considered. ESA Director General and ESA Council Chair also addressed the progress made in addressing critical challenges faced by ESA in preparation for the next Ministerial Council in 2025. This includes the establishment of the Independent Project Management Authority (IPMA), updating procurement and geo-return rules, service procurement and agreements with Member States.

This geo-return debate is turning into a "for" or "against" ESA, which is not helping. Few facts need to be highlighted: 1- ESRO which became later ESA stands for European Space Research Organisation, and its mission was to develop a european space industry. There the geo-return made sense simply because except in UK and France there was no space industry. 2- ESA later developped into the Agency for countries which did not have an agency and the political games started to infiltrate ESA management down to A4 level as some countries requested to have georeturn within ESA Staff and keeping a detail account of how many A4-A5-A6 and Directors were from each country. Still ESA managed to keep the political games out of some areas and managed to run very successful science and earth observation programmes for which there was no national pride issue and theses programme had a lot of technological developments risks, covered by ESA cost plus contracts agreed by ESA delegations. 3- the issue today is so called "New Space" which is essentially driven by risk taking for future profitability to private investors. To support this model "New Space" needs cheap launch else the €€ books will not balance. Everybody and his sister claim that he can build a cheaper launcher than Ariane 6 IF he can ignore all rules including georeturn, BUT still get funded by ESA or other public source! (note that if and but are in capital letter). That is were the georeturn debate get corrupted, New Space wants the butter and the money of the butter! ESA and its georeturn can still exist to develop technology science, earth observation, etc, and even moon exploration as nobody sees short term profitability in them. ESA shall stay clear of "New Space" and leave it to real private investors.

The CSA announces a contract award to a Canadian company for a high-profile European space project. Kepler Communications Inc. will act as the prime contractor for European Space Agency - ESA’s HydRON-DS demonstration, the biggest role a Canadian company has ever played in any ESA mission. This opportunity is possible thanks to Canada’s longstanding cooperation agreement with European Space Agency - ESA, which allows Canadian companies to bring their expertise and skills to the European market. Some of the other contracts enabled through this agreement: ⭐ C-CORE will design and build a calibration transponder for the Biomass mission. ⭐ SBQuantum will assess the viability of its quantum diamond magnetometer in space, and ESA will evaluate the reliability and precision of the sensor and explore its potential deployment on satellites. ⭐ ABB Analytical Business Unit will provide the Laser Unit for the interferometer of the Forum mission, ESA’s ninth Earth Explorer satellite mission. With the Government’s pause on NASA SEWP VI, I started to think about GWACs, MACs and IDIQ vehicles --- it’s a love/hate relationship in the BD world. The acquisition process hasn’t gotten better over the years --- they’re time-consuming (both from capture and proposal periods), and you’re contending with intense competition, frequently issued amendments, and long delays in awarding, which are compounded by numerous protests. However, this necessary contracting challenge provides diversity in a company’s contract portfolio, allows for contract avenues for shaping work to be procured against, and can ensure stability with new or existing agency clients promoting long-term relationships. Tired and happy, we are back from Glasgow following the wrap-up of the 2024 SPACE PROPULSION CONFERENCE.   Here are the topics that dominated the conference this year:   💚 High performance green chemical propulsion: Nitrous Oxide and HTP- based propulsion presentations by the likes of German Aerospace Center (DLR)/ISPTech, Dawn Aerospace, Benchmark Space Systems, and Łukasiewicz - ILOT took centre stage in the technical sessions, with a very insightful green propellant life cycle study by Lily Blondel Canepari at European Space Agency - ESA as the cherry on the cake. 🚿 Water propulsion-- both chemical (electrolysis + H2-O2 combustion) and electrical (Hall effect thrusters)--had a firm presence, with insightful presentations by ArianeGroup, URA Thrusters, Airbus Defence and Space, among others. ⚙ Rotating Detonation engines were firmly established in the in-space propulsion category, with two full sessions dedicated to this topic, plus a keynote by Prof. Kasahara on his RDE research at Nagoya University. 🚀 Advances in hybrid propulsion was a hot topic, with notable research from multiple universities and research institutes, as well as several hybrid engine microlauncher concepts presented at the Technical exhibition. 🛸 Disruptive concepts such as nuclear propulsion, VLEO air-breathing engines, autophlange engines, as well as novel electrical propulsion systems, made an appearance as well.   Over 700 participants had the opportunity to attend presentations of 350 papers in 99 technical sessions, 4 round table discussions, 6 keynote speeches, an ESPSS workshop, a Startup Competition, plus the technical exhibition with over 30 space government and industry players represented.   Roughly 65% of the papers presented were on in-space propulsion topics, and 35% were on launcher propulsion.   Overall, a fantastic event-packed conference providing the latest developments in the field of in-space and launcher propulsion, very well organized and coordinated.
