📢 Introducing the speakers of the first #PlenarySession at the #IAUTokyo2024 Conference! The IAU 2024 International Conference, taking place this November at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, includes three Plenary Sessions, the first of which will discuss "Universality, Diversity, and Interdependence." We at the IAU look forward to hearing from the three distinguished speakers on this panel: - Simon Marginson, Professor of Higher Education, University of Oxford - Sandra Almeida, President, UFMG, Brazil - Patrick Deane, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Queen's University, Canada About the Session: Values, deeply embedded in cultures and traditions, are intrinsic to the very essence of universities since their inception. Indeed, universities are the very places most suitable to examine them both historically and theoretically. They are fragile and precious resources, without which we stand no hope of confronting the challenges of the present. In a context in which university leaders are ever more drawn into profound political, economic, cultural and social issues, university values are increasingly being tested and contested at the local and global level. Amid the rich and diverse set of cultures and traditions around the world, what are the fundamental values that universities share? What is their meaning and purpose? How do they guide leadership and overall decision-making, ethical conduct and meaningful engagement? In brief, how do universities navigate the ethical dimensions of universality and diversity in a world of interdependence? 📣 YERUN proudly endorses the "More Than Our Rank" initiative, advocating for a more responsible and holistic approach to assessing #universities. We believe that the primary goal of universities is to serve society, and their value extends far beyond global #ranking metrics. 📊Overemphasis on rankings perpetuates biases toward reputation and historical prestige, often overshadowing the achievements of young universities and the diversity of institutional excellence. Traditional rankings also fall short in capturing the multifaceted impacts of universities. ⚖️YERUN recognises the systemic challenges of ranking systems and calls for a more comprehensive evaluation framework that reflects the diverse strengths and societal impact of institutions. 🤝 By endorsing "More Than Our Rank," YERUN is committed to reshaping the narrative around institutional success, prioritising meaningful and diverse contributions over one-dimensional rankings 👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dgaqrKud Brunel University of London Nicolaus Copernicus University Universidade Nova de Lisboa Maastricht University University of Rome Tor Vergata UiT- The Arctic University of Norway Ulm University Universidad Carlos III de Madrid University of Antwerp University of Bremen University of Cyprus University of Essex University of Eastern Finland Universität Klagenfurt University of Konstanz University of Limerick University of South-Eastern Norway Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark Université Paris Dauphine - PSL University of Potsdam Sveučilište u Rijeci / University of Rijeka University of Stirling Tallinn University International Network of Research Management Societies CoARA - Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment

Astana, Kazakhstan, the second coldest capital in the world, is the home of Nazarbayev University Here, Duke University - The Fuqua School of Business has invested 15 years collaborating with Kazakhstan to establish the region’s first research-focused business school Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Business. This ongoing partnership has many stories worth telling, and I intend on sharing them bit by bit. While my primary aim is self-reflection on lessons I have learned, I have little interest or discipline that would lead to a private journal, so I will share them here with my network and others who may find them valuable. In 2009 A small group of dedicated and talented Kazakhstani individuals were tasked with Central Asia’s most ambitious educational project: to build a research university capable of competing with the best Western universities regarding research output, student quality, and global impact. This journey is marked by challenges and obstacles, both anticipated and unforeseen, all of which this team has and continues to address over time. This year, Nazarbayev University welcomed its 11th Executive MBA and 10th MBA classes, expanding its network to over 500 graduates representing key leaders and decision-makers in Kazakhstan. The Fuqua School of Business is nearing the milestone of teaching 150 courses to these students. On the research front, NUGSB continues to attract top-tier research faculty. Year after year, their work is published in the leading journals of their respective fields. The most essential and obvious lesson is that solving ambitious, complex, and challenging problems requires assembling the best team. From my experience, Kazakhstan chose some of the most dedicated, talented, and ambitious individuals to build this institution. As I write today, it some of these individuals return to the university, a real testament to the ambition and dedication of this group. On Duke’s end, I have had the tremendous honor of working closely with faculty and staff who brought their unique talents and expertise. Yet, the attribute I grew to appreciate most, and hope to emulate, is an intense curiosity and commitment to figuring out how to translate Duke’s values, dedication to quality, and academic excellence to Kazakhstan. Many of you in my network have also played a significant role in this project, and I hope you will all engage with me throughout these posts. If you have any questions, curiosities, or observations, please share them—your input will guide my focus. Otherwise, be prepared for a journey steered by my whims. post 2 partnership: https://lnkd.in/e55JXUsU post 3 the complexity of a university: https://lnkd.in/eHVGt_Ju

The Stimulating Sustainable Entrepreneurial Thinking in Scientists #SSETS programme continues to be a game changer as lead Coach, Dr. Akanimo Odon continues to groom entrepreneurial academics. This week's learning session focused on being able to publicise my research outputs on social media and not just on academic journals, networking and ensuring my research interests fits into some, if not all of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals #SDGs. #MyKeyLessonsOnSSETS thus far include: 1. Ensuring collaboration with researchers within and outside one's region. This helps to come up with solutions that are not region-specific, but can be applied across regions. 2. Also, ensuring that one carries out interdisciplinary studies with researchers outside one's field as this increases research scope, solves more problems, expands knowledge, increases relevance and puts one in a better position to win a grant. 3. The SDGs obviously stem from problems that need to be solved. As such, channelling one's research towards any these SDGs indicates relevance to not just one's profession but the world. 4. Teaching students with the industry in mind, and not just offering theoretical lessons. They should be able to solve real life issues with the knowledge they have acquired in class. 5. Career satisfaction can be achieved if one's talents/gifts/skills are integrated into one's daily career activities. Special thanks to our partners British Council Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Lancaster University National Universities Commission (NUC) Caleb University Lagos and Dr Viola Akhigbe Chinyere Ezeanya-Bakpa #BeforeAndAfterWithSSETS #SSETS
