Smarter places for learning take on many forms. Fanning Howey is proud to be part of the design team for the new Village of Bradley Sports Complex in Bradley, Illinois. The state-of-the-art sports complex will include more than 1 million SF of regulation artificial turf and will create a destination for youth sports events in the region. In addition to cutting-edge athletic facilities, the design places a strong focus on placemaking. This will provide an exceptional spectator experience before, during and after games. A transformative project like this takes a strong team effort. We're thrilled to be partnering with the Village of Bradley, Kimley-Horn (Design Lead), Gilbane Chicago (Construction Manager), MG2A and PSI Construction. Don’t just look a few years out; take the time to develop a long-haul vision and plan for flexibility from the get-go. This is a big takeaway from my conversation with Benedict Evans at Stadia magazine about the ongoing sports venue construction boom and the significant potential for renovations and retrofits for both existing and future facilities, especially at the collegiate level. We delved into our work on the 2017 retrofit of Turner Field in Atlanta, which transformed into the Center Parc Stadium for @Georgia State University football program. An exemplary approach to stadium retrofitting, it set a precedent for the work we’ve been leading for @The S/L/A/M Collaborative for the The University of Georgia, University of Connecticut and elsewhere. Projects like these, which rely on renovating existing infrastructure, aren’t just time-efficient, they also align with our clients’ sustainability goals while allowing for the creation of world-class facilities within a reasonable budget. It’s been 15 years since Kingsbridge Community Sports began its journey, exploring possibilities of community-led sports facilities development, in South Birmingham. A lot has changed in this time, but the question remains, what will Birmingham City Council decide to do with Holders Lane Sports Fields? The old derelict changing block (featured in this video) has now been demolished, but little else has been done at Holders Lane in recent years. Local grassroots sports clubs still need recreational facilities for their teams. The sports fields themselves are protected through Fields in Trust, but significant investment is still needed to mitigate against the regular flooding. So what’s next? Will Birmingham City Council’s current financial crisis reopen conversations about a collaborative partnership with local community groups, or will the open spaces once entrusted to the Council for the benefit of local communities; be eventually sold for development? How does parks and recreation impact your community? The #1 purpose of parks and recreation departments is to provide high quality facilities and services to their local community. This can happen in a variety of ways, but let’s take it one step further. While municipalities invest millions each year into their parks and recreation departments across the country, it is more important now that ever before that we show return on investment. Investing into your parks is an investment into your whole community. Here is a quick snapshot of our crown jewel baseball/softball facility, Freedom Park. Freedom Park bosts 12 baseball/softball fields as well as 1 state of the art Mircle League synthetic surface field. This facility is utilized for our local youth and adult baseball and softball leagues throughout the week, and doubles as a tournament facility on the weekends.Since partnering with Placer.ai we have gained much insight on our parks visitation rate, number of park visitors, where they come from, and how long they stay. Not only are we providing high quality programs and facilities to our locals (the most important), we are generating tourism dollars throughout our entire community! It is our responsibility as parks and recreation professionals to tell our story, and educate the public on ALL the benefits of investing into parks and recreation.Excitied to see our impacts in 2024! #parksandrecreation #tellyourstory #sportstourism #sportseta #youthsports #georgiatourism #GRPA #competevaldostalowndes #TitleTown
