What an enjoyable and engaging day at yesterday’s Middle East Sports Investment Forum 2024 (MESIF) at the Emirates Stadium. It was an impressive turnout with strong representation from the Middle East and UK, including Government reps, rights holders, client bodies, consultants, experts….and others from the Middle East sports family. The discussion covered a lot of ground, but the key takeaways for me are: * The need for agility and innovation to cater for new audiences. For example, in Saudi Arabia where 60% of the population is under 30. * Women’s sport is growing and will continue to boom.  * Where properly planned, elite sports products and programmes can have an immense effect on grass roots sport and communities. * From a resourcing point of view, it is crucial to build capacity, enhance knowledge and grow skillsets in order to achieve such ambitious plans. 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝗭𝘂𝗹𝘂 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 - The Catapult x @AmaZulu Performance Symposium, held on October 12, 2024, aimed to establish AMAZULU FOOTBALL CLUB as a leader in football education in South Africa. This first-of-its-kind event to be organized by a South African Football Club, brought together coaches, performance staff, and football stakeholders to share knowledge, discuss modern football practices, and provide practical insights into high-performance strategies. Presentations were delivered by AmaZulu staff and covered the following: o 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 by Pilela Maposa: Insights into data-driven opposition analysis and training analysis. o 𝗜𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 by Dr. Tafa Kasunzuma: Explored strategies to prevent and manage football-specific injuries. o T𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 by Joshua Smith: Discussed internal and external load metrics to optimize performance and minimize injury risks. o 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 by Zunaid Crowie: Highlighted the importance of aligning fitness with team tactics. o 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗢𝗙 by Pedro Dias: Explained strategic planning, player recruitment, and collaboration within the club. The plan for the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 is to have a broader reach, improved engagement, and enhanced educational impact across all levels of South African football. 🏟️ We are thrilled to announce the publication of our article, "Understanding Resident Support Towards the 2030 FIFA World Cup: A Co-Hosting Country’s Perspective," co-authored with Victor Almeida, in the #EuropeanSportManagementQuarterly (ESMQ). 📖 Our research explores the Portuguese residents' perceptions of the 2030 FIFA World Cup within the frameworks of agency theory and social exchange theory. 🔍 Key Highlights: - The Portuguese Football Federation (PFF) plays a vital role in fostering support, while trust in the government is notably weaker. - Strong principal–agent dynamics between residents and the PFF can significantly boost event support. - Co-hosting introduces complexities, including shared benefits and risks, but residents feel the social value of the event is diminished in this multi-nation setup. 🌍 Implications: The findings highlight the importance of strengthening relationships between organizers and residents, addressing trust deficits, and involving communities in decision-making to enhance legitimacy and support.
