Today we’re proud to share our refreshed human rights strategy which is a recommitment to respect and support the human rights of our team members, customers, the communities we serve and workers throughout our supply chain. Our refreshed strategy provides a framework to prevent harm and foster a culture that embraces diversity, inclusion and equality. This includes fair and safe working conditions, responsible purchasing practices and protecting the rights of people across our operations and value chain, especially the most vulnerable. This strategy has evolved from an extensive period of research, learning, consultation and design, in partnership with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including NGOs, suppliers, academics, team members, survivors of modern slavery and workers in our supply chain. 🛒 How are grocery stores doing on human rights? Turns out, there's always room for improvement! Oxfam's recent report states that making the shift from paper to practice means carrying out robust human rights impact assessments (HRIA), consulting with stakeholders, and taking real, tangible actions on findings. 🚀 Here’s a snapshot of what caught our eye: 🧐 Making commitments to HRIA is a step in the right direction, but there's room to make it more robust in practice. Let's base assessments on globally recognised human rights, prioritise high-risk supply chains, and ensure engagement with the communities most affected. Don't forget to turn that introspective lens on your own procurement practices. 🤝 Hiring a fantastic consultant isn’t enough, companies need to level up. Invest in your internal human rights expertise, empower those teams to drive progress, and break down those silos to ensure everyone's on board – from management to buying departments. 📈 Transparency is essential! This powerful policy fosters a more inclusive and equitable marketplace. What is it? Affirmative procurement policies encourage businesses and government institutions to prioritize purchasing goods and services from specific groups that have been historically underrepresented in contracting opportunities. This can include women-owned farms, minority-owned businesses, veteran-owned businesses and businesses located in economically disadvantaged areas. How does it work? These policies often involve setting specific goals for the percentage of contracts awarded to these designated groups. They may also include outreach programs, training opportunities, and streamlined bidding processes to level the playing field. Why are women-owned farms specifically mentioned? Women are significantly underrepresented in agriculture, despite their vast potential and contributions to the sector. Affirmative procurement can create a more level playing field for women-owned farms by ensuring they have a fair shot at competing for contracts and contributing to the food supply chain. The Benefits: * Promotes equal opportunities: Affirmative procurement helps break down barriers and creates a more diverse supplier base, leading to a richer pool of ideas and innovation. * Strengthens the economy: Studies show that diverse businesses often outperform their peers, contributing to a stronger and more resilient economy overall. * Supports a fairer marketplace: By giving historically underrepresented groups a chance, affirmative procurement fosters a more inclusive business environment. 🚽 According to the World Health Organization and UNICEF, nearly half the global population still face inadequate sanitation facilities. Ahead of #WorldToiletDay on 19 November, SEI researchers have identified six tools and strategies to achieve universal access to clean water and safe sanitation. Biljana Macura, SEI sanitation and health team lead, emphasizes the need for decisions rooted in scientific knowledge for tangible change: “If we are serious about accelerating change, it is critical that decisions build on scientific knowledge about what really works.” The theme for World Toilet Day 2023, #AcceleratingChange, highlights the urgency to meet #SDG6 on global water and sanitation access. #WorldHumanRightsDay Today is World’s Human Rights Day, established in 1948. The Universal Declaration of #HumanRights is a milestone document proclaiming the inalienable rights that every person is entitled to, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status. As a person who spends lots of time in the saffron market, I believe me and my colleagues can effectively celebrate such a day by promoting and supporting human rights within our industry. Here are some hints: *Ensuring fair trade practices: Saffron #suppliers can commit to #fairtrade principles, which promote equitable pricing, transparency, and respect for #workersrights. This includes providing #fairwages, #safeworking, and empowering workers to have a voice in decision-making processes. *Supporting sustainable sourcing: Suppliers can prioritize sourcing saffron from #farmers who follow sustainable agricultural practices and respect #environmentalstandards. This helps protect the rights of #futuregenerations to a #healthyenvironment. *Partnering with responsible organizations: Suppliers can collaborate with organizations that work towards #humanrights, such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on #laborrights, fair trade, or community development. This can involve supporting projects and initiatives that promote #socialjustice and empower marginalized communities involved in #saffroncultivation. *Educating consumers: Suppliers can use World Human Rights Day as an opportunity to #raiseawareness among saffron #consumers about the importance of #ethicalsourcing and the impact of their purchasing decisions. Sharing information about the social and human rights aspects of #saffronproduction can help consumers make more informed choices that align with their values. Together, we can create a world where human rights are respected in every aspect of our lives, including the saffron trade.
