Adopting and supporting #sustainable business models, along with focusing on resource efficiency, #recycling, and reusing materials, are key ways to develop our economies. By reducing waste and generating new economic opportunities, the region can invest in #renewable energy, sustainable agriculture.

🌍 When I read the below Project Syndicate article, it reminded me of an Ethiopian proverb that roughly translates to English as "Killing two birds with one stone." This proverb isn't about harming birds but rather about achieving two objectives simultaneously. In a similar vein, the article argues how incorporating renewable energy into agriculture can help address two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): zero hunger (#SDG2) and universal energy access (#SDG7). It is particularly crucial now to integrate renewable energy technologies into our food system, as the world must support its ever-growing population while also meeting its net-zero goals. The current fossil fuel-powered food system is neither sustainable, resilient, nor equitable. Therefore, we require a paradigm shift in our agri-food system that could democratize access to yield-enhancing technologies, improve production sustainably, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is where solutions such as solar-powered irrigation and cold storage can play a role in transforming our agri-food system. Discover CEEZER's project developers: FairClimateFund The richest 10% of the world is responsible for half of global CO₂ emissions. The consequences of climate change mainly affect people in vulnerable regions. That's not fair," says Paul Latta from FairClimateFund. FairClimateFund is a social enterprise that initiates projects that reduce CO₂ emissions and benefit those who are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change fairly and effectively. They do this by investing in climate projects in the Global South with a focus on cleaner cooking solutions and reforestation according to fair principles. With the carbon credits that these projects generate, local households get access to biogas technology, reduce carbon emissions, cook without smoke in the kitchen, and increase crop yields. It has been committed to a fair voluntary carbon market for years that benefits people in the most fragile regions of the world. Its projects are all certified by Gold Standard and/or the Fairtrade International climate standards. The voluntary carbon market can make an important contribution to local sustainable development provided that a fair price is paid for CO₂ reduction and that this income actually reaches local communities. Through the purchase of carbon credits from FairClimateFund's projects, organizations can take responsibility for their carbon footprint, while also promoting health and well-being for people in vulnerable areas. Europe becomes a Carbon Markets leader 🇪🇺 🌳 February 20th  was a big day for carbon markets - European Parliament, Council, and Commission - reached an agreement on the legal text of EU CRCF (Carbon Removal Certification Framework). While there is much legalese around this (and more to come), the summarizing story is concise and clear - Europe is becoming the leader in creating a clear framework for carbon markets. Last year was not easy for carbon markets, there were many cases of faulty projects being published. But those are the growing pains of every new market and this is now being used to make this market better.The carbon buyers will need more transparency of the projects and to be sure that they really do good for nature. Farmers and foresters need more security that the new carbon markets will be there in 10 years as well. The CRCF ensures both. The European Commisson spent a lot of time on getting the scope of the CRCF right and I do think they managed to do it  well. The framework includes the following 1. permanent carbon removal 2. temporary carbon storage in long-lasting products (such as wood-based construction products) of a duration of at least 35 years  3. temporary carbon storage from carbon farming (e.g. restoring forests and soil, wetland management, seagrass meadows) 4. soil emission reduction (from carbon farming) The first one is designed in sync with IPCC - no limitations on carbon removal methods, which is good. The second one is important because it allows us to bring in solutions where wood and other materials are used for long periods. The third one is important to us at Arbonics, while we use Verra to verify credits, this very much aligns with our approach for afforestation. And the last one should make farmers happy, this one was not included in the previous version. ⏩ The Road Ahead While this was an important and strong step, there is still a lot of work ahead to get this usable to businesses in Europe. Some important next steps: * An EU-wide registry will be developed in four years from the adoption of the regulation. Meanwhile, other registries can be used. * The Commission's expert group will start working on methodologies for CDR. It is still unclear how long this will take. When will CRCF be fully operational? Eve Tamme estimated “So, the earliest in 2025, possibly in 2026.” While it will still take some time, we are moving fast and inching closer. I liked this statement: “Over time, this will create an important additional business model for farmers and foresters,” commented Wopke Hoekstra, the EU’s climate commissioner. While Arbonics currently already helps European landowners with afforestation, there is more legal support needed to ensure landowners and credit buyers. That is why yesterday was an important step, once CRCF is live, I think European carbon markets will explode in size. 

In an era where environmental sustainability and climate change are pressing concerns, three historically disparate sectors—carbon, oil and gas, and agriculture—are finding themselves on convergent paths. The traditional boundaries that once separated these industries are dissolving as they come together under a unified management system and regulatory framework.
