Neil suggests the real solution lies with the airline engine manufacturers: “Perhaps we should leave new-generation aviation fuels to those that understand the complexities better than we do. A European aviation industry coalition has welcomed the inclusion of sustainable aviation fuel as a ‘strategic net zero technology’ under the EU Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA), which has received provisional agreement between the European Parliament and Council of the European Union, reports Christopher Surgenor for GreenAir News. The Act is a central part of the EU’s Green Deal Industrial Plan, which aims to follow the example of the United States’ Inflation Reduction Act in stimulating domestic manufacturing capacity in clean energy technologies, with the intention of reaching at least 40% of expected EU demand by 2030. The European Commission says the Act will create the regulatory conditions necessary to attract and support investment, and help build more production facilities in a faster manner. The Commission has also recommended an EU-wide 90% net GHG emissions reduction target by 2040 compared to 1990 levels and put forward a series of measures to achieve it, including through the use of SAF. With UK elections due to take place this year, industry coalition Sustainable Aviation has launched a manifesto that calls on the next government to accelerate policy action on the transition to net zero aviation, reports Christopher Surgenor for GreenAir News. Specifically, it sets out how the incoming government can ensure the UK is world-leading in sustainable aviation through becoming an early mover on SAF production and supply, strengthening aerospace technology innovation and accelerating airspace modernisation. The industry group represents airlines, airports, manufacturers, air navigation service providers and fuel producers. The government has just announced £200 million ($250m) in joint public/industry investment for energy efficient aircraft while the UK CAA has selected three companies for the government funded Hydrogen Challenge Sandbox. Although the debate concerning the Norwegian government’s decision to postpone their initial zero emission requirements for all vessels in the world heritage fjords from 2026 to 2030 has caused quite the uproar – some key players and dedicated game changers are still pushing through. There are numerous industry front runners together with the Port of Bergen / Bergen Havn, such as Norwegian Electric Systems (NES), Corvus Energy, Havila Kystruten, Zinus AS, Norled AS, and of course our very own Environmental Port Index (EPI) and Plug | Shore Power & Maritime Charging to name a few, that are still standing the course for positive change. Zero emission traffic is not something far-fetched for the future – it is possible already today! Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I can share the Port of Bergen’s recent positive results in this segment. In 2024, the Port of Bergen aimed for at least 50% of cruise ships to utilise shore power while at berth. Now that we've wrapped up the busiest leg of our cruise season this year, we are pleased to share that: 🔌 Around 50% of all cruise ships turn off their diesel engines and connect to the shore power facility while at berth in the Port of Bergen. 🔌 Nearly 70% of all large cruise ships use shore power in the Port of Bergen. 🔌 So far and only this year, this has led to a reduction of nearly 11,500 tons of CO2 emissions in Bergen. It is also extremely inspiring that other ports are joining the mission! Huge congratulations to Plug | Shore Power & Maritime Charging and Montrose Port Authority, for not only making the important decision to invest in zero emission infrastructure (also known as the future...) in Scotland, but also for winning the Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce – Net Zero Business Award for the shore power facility. A predictable political framework is essential for the success of the energy transition, and regulations and regulative framework are identified as the most efficient drivers for change.
