💬 “Development of space for innovators can be achieved in such a way that it acts as the connective tissue between the public sector, prospective investors, innovators and wider industry.”
This month in Forbes, our Chief Scientific Officer Kath Mackay welcomes the intervention by Michelle Donelan MP, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, to offer targeted support to some of the most promising science and tech businesses, meaning more substantive mentoring and funding for truly game-changing businesses within these sectors.
Yet she also reminds us of the importance of doing more to continually improve the innovation ecosystem at a wider, more holistic level.
Securing the right physical space and infrastructure is hugely important to supporting innovators to scale, especially when that infrastructure serves as the scaffold for cross-sector synergies and strategic collaboration.

A powerful restatement of the need for fit-for-purpose space for innovation industries.
But… this applies universally. Desirable commercial real estate is the fit-for-purpose built environment for how people wish to work, trade, live, and play.
When needs… from location to configuration to alignment with our values… change there’s massive opportunity for capital and equally a challenge for owners and managers of less well appointed assets.
The experience in retail and logistics in response to changes in technology and behaviour is well know. We are now at a tipping point across the real estate universe… the impacts residential, offices and specialist sectors (like innovation/life sciences) as well as retail/logistics.
The challenge is how to create the conduits between capital and occupiers… with aligned sourcing, delivery, and operational capabilities.
Businesses such as Bruntwood SciTech, Tritax Big Box REIT plc, Basecamp, and RESA show the power in this

Congratulations to Luxinnovation GIE and their acceleration program, Fit4Start, as well as the Luxembourg-City Incubator for their selection among Europe’s Leading Start-up Hubs published by the Financial Times! 🚀 Being acknowledged alongside institutions like UnternehmerTUM of Munich is an honor for both entities (without having the audacity to only partially compare our country with Germany and their startup ecosystem). 🏆🎉
Two Luxembourg structures among Europe's leading startup hubs? No chance, that must be paid or nobody else applied.
- No, not every structure that did apply is also in the ranking
- No, not even 1 Euro was invested or paid to get in this report
- No, both structures don’t think they’re better than the The LHoFT - Luxembourg House of Financial Technology, Technoport SA, or anybody else in Luxembourg. I’m pretty sure Nasir Zubairi and Diego De Biasio are proud that LXI and the LCI made it there ! 💼💡
This recognition underlines the collective efforts of the ecosystem over the past 5-10 years. I’m sure Sasha Baillie and Bastien Berg would agree that this reward represents recognition for our whole ecosystem and not only for them. 🌟🤝
2023 was indeed exceptional for Luxembourg's startup scene, with national startups raising over 150 million (and depending on who you classify as a national startup, we are even close to 200 million). Special mention goes to standout startups like Salonkee, SustainCERT, Circu Li-ion, Tadaweb, Next Gate Tech, among others. 📈💼
Additionally, Mangrove Capital Partners ranked in the Top 10 of Dealroom.co’s 2023 VC Ranking, while Circulion was the only European startup to reach the final top 10 of the Startup World Cup in San Francisco (where a Luxembourgish startup reached the Top 10 ranking in 2 consecutive!). On the political front, the Ministère de l'Économie - Luxembourg, Luxinnovation and Startup Luxembourg launched a strategy to further enhance our ecosystem, including the Dealroom platform and we, as Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, also invested in the new vintage of the public-private VC Digital Tech Fund managed by Expon Capital. 🌍🏛️
Are we at the end of our road? Have we achieved everything? Are we the perfect startup nation? Certainly not and far from it. This is just the beginning, and we're committed to better supporting startups and refining our framework. Mistakes and failures are inevitable and essential components of our journey💪
Our key performance indicators aren't nice-looking annual reports or social media metrics. Our ultimate key performance indicator is the success of our national startups, which remains our primary focus. 💼🌱
