At #COP29, the members of the Global Council for Responsible Transition Minerals - an independent and high-level multistakeholder initiative launched by the Forum de Paris sur la Paix in June of this year - issued a set of recommendations to advance global cooperation across sectors and regions, aimed at securing responsible and sustainable mineral supplies for the energy transition. 🌍 Our Key Recommendations: 1️⃣ Align and integrate climate, industrial, and mineral multilateral strategies.   2️ Establish a working group to draw a roadmap towards an International Agreement on the Management of Resources to ensure access and benefit-sharing. 3️ Create centralized mineral data repositories for improved insights and consolidate existing information on endowments, regulations, trade flows, and ESG impacts. 4️ Explore strategies to reduce risks and accelerate financing for responsible mining in developing countries.   5️ Examine opportunities for value creation in minerals-rich countries to ensure they benefit from their resources. 6️ Conduct comparative analyses between minerals supply chains and other commodities to identify transferable best practices.   7️ Conduct a forward-looking study to examine potential scenarios arising from insufficient mineral supply. 📖 To read our recommendations: http://bit.ly/4eLVWNi Bruno Oberle, Kandeh YUMKELLA, Sheila Khama, Jason Bordoff, Connie Hedegaard, Ma Jun, Glen Mpufane, Juan Carlos Jobet, Izabella Monica Teixeira (She/Her), Bogolo Joy Kenewendo

Ms. Leila Benali, PhD., Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, took part remotly, at the Minerals Security Partnership Forum, which provides a multilateral cooperation platform to shape the future global policies on critical raw materials, thus focusing on reconciling the interests of producing and consumer countries by developing sustainable and trade-friendly ways. Contributing to the discussions, Ms. Benali highlighted the importance of multilateral actions to overcome the challenges that are currently facing the world and stressed the need to have a sustainable critical value chain, especially in critical and strategic minerals and to leverage industrial capabilities to prevent volatility and inflation for populations by promoting the circular economy. A new report by Climate Home exposes a contradiction in Europe’s sustainable investment efforts. Millions of dollars from EU “green” funds are being invested in major coal companies, undermining international agreements to reduce reliance on coal-fired power. The report reveals that European entities have invested over €65 million in coal firms across China, India, Indonesia, the United States, and South Africa. This project has been such a joy for our team at Levin Sources because we've had the opportunity to dive deeply into eleven countries that are supplying mined and recycled transition minerals into energy value chains. The purpose of this work is to empower our community - yes, YOU - to know the priority global levers and geographical hotspots (mineral, issue complexes) where extra attention, investment and action could help market nations not only secure the minerals they need, but do so sustainably and responsibly. This work has fed into our and our collaborators' other work for the Global Battery Alliance, the Global Investor Commission for Mining 2030, donor planning for forest-smart mining, and more, as we have been able to share the country reports on a bilateral basis with our partners. 🌍🔋 Exploring Priorities for a Just Energy Transition We’re proud to share the results of our strategic assessments into transition minerals, funded by ClimateWorks Foundation.  🌱 This work dives deep into the opportunities and challenges across 11 key countries—including Australia, Chile, Indonesia, and Zambia—to identify where greater attention, investment and action can drive the most impact for building secure, responsible, and resilient minerals supply chains, nationally and globally.   As the world pivots towards more sustainable energy systems, transition minerals are critical. Our reports provide actionable insights for policymakers, philanthropic funders, industry, and civil society to focus resources where they’re most needed.   We are excited to contribute to the just energy transition by equipping stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to drive greater sustainability through minerals value chains. Fresh developments on responsible resource management! 🌍 Last week, following the Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, the UN Deputy Secretary-General put forth a powerful vision: a path to align global mineral needs with human rights, environmental protection, and inclusive development at the forefront. The message is clear—transparency, accountability, and multilateral cooperation are essential to ensuring resource-rich countries benefit from their own minerals, while protecting local communities and ecosystems. 🌱 The EU is setting an example, with the adoption this year of the Regulation for a secure and sustainable supply of Critical Raw Materials. This groundbreaking move requires companies involved in projects contributing to Europe’s mineral security (including critical resources like lithium) to actively engage with local communities, address environmental and social impacts, and promote economic benefits. https://lnkd.in/eeUy_hpy

Call for papers: TC/ESG 2025 Conference panel “Small Groups, Big Goals: Minilateralism in Action”   I am organizing a panel with Jean Frederic Morin on minilateralism for the 2025 Transformations Community/Earth System Governance Project Conference in South Africa next year.    The questions we are keen to address with the panel are:   1. Once created, how can minilaterals be expanded in terms of both membership and level of ambition (and is there a trade-off between these two goals)?  2. How can minilaterals overcome the challenges they face in terms of ensuring equity and fairness within their membership?  3.
