Do you get nervous before you give presentations? There is one thing you can do. Look for opportunities to do them. Put yourself forward for them. Yes it sounds obvious. And maybe too much of a challenge. But you can start small. Force yourself to say something in a small meeting. Then build from there. The more you do it, the easier it will get. The future of stand up comedy is secure 🔥 This weekend I went back to the roots of Stand Up Company and hosted a stand up comedy workshop on stage performance and storytelling for this crazy bunch of aspiring comedians 😁 What are 4 comedy insights from my early days, that helped me become a better speaker: ✅ Recognition: More nodding = more laughing. People love to hear about things they know, think and feel. ✅ Simplicity: If you can't present your 60min keynote in 60 seconds when asked, go back to the drawing board. ✅ Confidence: You lead, the audience must follow. You take the audience by the hand, keep them guessing, keep them surprised. ✅ Cozy schmozy: Turn any room into a small cozy comedy club by involving the audience. 3000 people need to feel as 30 people in a bar, minutes after you walked on stage. #standuptostandout #communication #publicspeaking

Last week I attended my first-ever comedy show I noticed that sales and stand-up comedy have a lot in common & it got me thinking about how I can deliver better demos We know how important storytelling is in comedy and the same is true in demos Jumping straight into features and how the software works will leave the prospect feeling lost It's why the build-up to the punchline or the discovery piece is so critical If they delivered the punch line without the build-up, the joke wouldn't land & the same is true for our demos. We have to understand the prospect's pain/problem and present how your product can solve it in a compelling way Besides, just the storytelling and deliverability, having confidence, a strong tone, and being adaptable can make for a better sales process Netflix is full of some great comedians so check out some specials and try to pick up on how they tell stories and work on weaving it into your next demo #discovery #demos #AE #comdey

Promoting yourself or your business can be difficult for some. Whether it is a simple 30 second Elevator Pitch or a live Presentation, it can take us out of our comfort zone. Is it worth the effort? This was me, many moons ago (1996 I'm guessing) promoting a live stand up comedy event, that the talented Geoff Stainton promoted at the Leopold Hotel. If I remember correctly, he came to me and said he needed a photo to promote the event in the Freo local paper. He asked me to grab a camera and thrust the tartan bunnet and face mask into my hands and told me to put them on. FYI - The event was a success and if you're a Comedy Historian, it was the first time Jim Jefferies was recorded live doing stand up comedy. Still have it on DVCPro somewhere. Moral is, when it comes to talking in front of people or a camera, don't take yourself too seriously and start out slowly by find a presenting technique that works for you and practice. Yes, it is well worth the effort, as we all like to do business with those we know like and trust. After months of focusing on other issues and life things, I’ve decided it’s time to get back into for stand-up comedy. This week marked a significant milestone in that journey, as I stepped back onto the open mic stage not once, but four times. My next mic will be my 200th (I am gonna stop counting now). Stand up comedy is, without a doubt, the most challenging form of spoken word. It demands creativity, resilience, and the courage to step out of your comfort zone. And that’s what I’ve been doing—writing new jokes, exploring fresh premises, and the development of punchlines that will resonate with audiences (this is not easy). I’m excited the unique challenges performing comedy brings. By no means am I great at this art form…. But my confidence in other aspects of my career helps me get up on stage and try. Comedy is a way to push boundaries, both personally and professionally. While stand up is not the right venure for all- I do suggest you should try new things that are out of your area of expertise and comfort. To my fellow professionals, remember the importance of pursuing passions that challenge and fulfill you. Life is complicated. Hard times come your way. Careers have twists and turns. I spent the last 8 Tuesday evening's learning the basics of Improvisational Comedy aka Improv. Tonight was to be my "graduation performance", unfortunately I couldn't get there as 'life' had other ideas; I had to improvise on my plan and prioritise something in my personal life. I can feeeeel the irony... Improv is great fun! It's helped me build my confidence in thinking on my feet, learn to listen from a point of curiosity, and bring out a fun inner child that used to only reveal itself after two beers (I call him two-pint Mike...). It's great for public speaking, team building, innovation, collaboration, communication... and I'm sure the list keeps going. I can see it being really beneficial for businesses incorporate into workshops, team days, etc...
