Australian government signs AWS to deliver $2bn top-secret cloud. The government will spend more than $2 billion with technology giant Amazon to build and run top-secret data centres for the country’s spies and military. The decade-long deal will let national security staff from agencies such as the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation and Australian Secret Intelligence Service collaborate with their peers without touching the open internet where foreign powers could gain access. But the total cost of the project, called the Top Secret Cloud, could be significantly higher than $2 billion, with the government covering the construction of the facilities and then paying for its use of them. Deployable 5G networks, particularly when set up to provide connectivity across enabling/sustainment areas, have the potential to facilitate significant changes to military medical support. Data feeds from MEDEVAC platforms, medical re-supply nodes, medical infrastructure and devices and the patients themselves will enable ever greater efficiency in the treatment of combat casualties, even up to large scale combat operations.

Across land, sea, air, #space and #cyber, military operations increasingly rely on #data. That makes access to #cloud #technologies essential. A European Defence Agency Agency-financed study has concluded that #cloudcomputing can be applied to #defence, both at the strategic level and in the field, to help European armed forces achieve information superiority against an adversary. The #EDA study over four years, ‘Cloud Intelligence for Decision Support and Analysis’ (#CLAUDIA), looked at the application of civilian cloud technologies in defence, including computing capabilities, #datastorage and software tools hosted externally.
