Harvesting Change in Sustainable Aquaculture 🐟 💧 In this episode of our #EnvironmentStories, we highlight sustainable and integrated aquaculture practices that can not only slow land degradation, but also restore ecosystems and help improve the livelihoods of communities that rely on land and water resources. In addition, sustainable aquaculture plays an important role in ensuring food and nutrition security for India's rural population, as fish is a rich source of high-quality protein and essential micronutrients. In the Indian states of #Assam and #Odisha, we are working with our partners to cultivate nutrient-rich aquatic foods with a low environmental and carbon footprint. We are realising this through: 💡 Capacity Building: Providing technical training for farmers on sustainable fishery and foxnuts production as well as strengthening the organisational capacity of farmers' institutions for efficient resource management. 📙 Access to Information: Installing ‘Agroecological Kiosks’ for access to important information, such as funding schemes, best practices and new farming techniques. 🐟 Economic Empowerment: Providing business development training to promote entrepreneurship within the #aquaculture value chain and imparting financial literacy to enhance farmers' financial skills. 👩🌾 Gender Inclusion: Prioritising the role of women fish and foxnut farmers in the aquaculture sector by working with women self-help groups (#SHGs) and employing gender transformative capacity building methods. 🤝 Policy Support: Providing policy advice for informed decision-making, in line with government support programmes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Scheme (#MGNREGS) and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (#PMMSY). Our joint efforts contribute to the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) between India and Germany, which declares #agroecology as a priority area of bilateral cooperation. See in the visuals below how our work has changed the lives of women farmers. 👇 Read more about our project activities: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gHEyesnC 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g7QAEvFR Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) Ministry of Rural Development, GoI Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH Fisheries GoI

Excited to share insights on redesigning agricultural subsidies for biodiversity conservation! Target 18 of the Global Biodiversity Framework highlights the need to re-evaluate the use of subsidies. BIOFIN's efforts in 27 countries are crucial in this regard. We are honored to feature excerpts from Dr Ashok Gulati's presentation in which he sheds light on repurposing harmful subsidies. Agricultural subsidies play an important role globally, but their unintended consequences, such as monocultures and biodiversity loss, are obvious. Dr Gulati argues for "smart subsidies" that focus on nature-friendly practices and are a win-win situation for farmers and the environment. Let's reshape subsidy policies wisely and promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable agriculture. 🌿 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dWcvk_6S #biodiversity #agriculture #subsidies Abbie Trinidad Ainur Shalakhanova UNDP in India

Farmers choices for the seeds to use in the next season are mainly driven with factors such as preferences, farming practices, market demands, and availability of resources. There is a need to strike a balance between traditional seed systems and modern technologies to ensure sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and food security are adhered to. By understanding the existing differences between local seed varieties and industrialized/improved varieties with actual facts helps farmers to make the right decision for their farming activities. Iles de Paix we support revitalization of Farmer's Managed seed system with below 👇 facts. 👨🏿🌾Genetic Diversity: Local seed varieties are the result of generations of adaptation and selection by farmers within specific communities. They often exhibit a high degree of genetic diversity, which allows them to adapt to local climatic and environmental conditions. Industrial seeds, on the other hand, are bred for specific traits such as uniformity, high yields, or resistance to pests and diseases. This selective breeding often leads to reduced genetic diversity within industrial seed varieties. 🌻Ownership and Control: Local seed varieties are typically considered a common resource and are freely saved, exchanged, and controlled by farmers within their communities. Farmers can save seeds from their harvest for future planting, preserving their autonomy and reducing dependency on external sources. In contrast, industrial seeds are usually developed and owned by seed companies, which often assert control through intellectual property rights (IPRs). Farmers using industrial seeds may be required to purchase new seeds each planting season, resulting in increased costs and dependency on seed companies. 🌾Availability and Access: Local seed varieties are usually more readily available to farmers within the community where they have been grown. Farmers can exchange, share, or acquire local seeds through local networks or traditional farming practices. Industrial seeds, on the other hand, are produced by seed companies and distributed through commercial channels. This may result in limited access, particularly for farmers in remote or economically disadvantaged areas. 🌴Ecological Impact: Local seed varieties are often embedded within traditional farming systems that promote biodiversity, ecological resilience, and knowledge sharing. They are often compatible with #agroecological practices that minimize environmental impacts. Industrial seeds, on the other hand, including genetically modified organisms (GMOs), may raise concerns regarding their long-term effects on biodiversity, ecological balance, and potential risks to human health. Dawadawa Impact Initiative (DII) is a social enterprise that empowers farmers to build resilience to climate change. We are a team of inspired and dedicated social entrepreneurs who have taken on the mission to revolutionize agriculture in Africa by rewriting the rules of agriculture through deploying innovation in agricultural products in the farm-to-table food system. The Dawadawa Impact Initiative was designed to help combat environmental damage, reduce the effects of climate change and decrease post-harvest losses by advocating for regenerative farming. Furthermore, this initiative provides farmers with practical tech solutions that are intended to increase their productivity levels as well as improve their quality of life. As a farmer-driven organization, we identify agricultural technologies and products that are tailored to the needs of smallholder farmers. We ensure these solutions address any constraints that may be impacting their businesses, provide training on how to use them effectively, and offer ongoing support for successful implementation. DII has chosen to embrace a bottom-up strategy when tackling the issue of food insecurity to foster an interconnectedness between rural farmers, buyers, processors, and investors. By championing sustainable agricultural production among vulnerable communities, we strive towards our goal of empowering these citizens with access to nutritious sustenance. #DII #Farming #Farmers #ClimateAction #climatecontrol
