After the high of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) launch on Monday it’s incredibly disheartening to read the news this morning about new UK gov biodiversity roll-backs in relation to biodiversity net gain and the built environment. This is a pioneering policy we needed in place yesterday. Now more than ever we need courage and environmental leadership from our policy makers. We need to be investing into our resilience and our future. This underscores the fact we can’t rely on government and the huge opportunity we have for businesses to show the environmental leadership that is very much needed right now. On a personal level, the more I hear about environmental policy delays, roll-backs and inaction the more it motivates me to keep pushing forward and to catalyse businesses into taking the essential actions we know are crucial for our continued survival on this planet. Funding Partner Organisations from 30 countries all over Europe and beyond are pleased to announce the opening of a Joint Transnational Call for research and innovation projects on “Aquatic Ecosystem Services”. The Joint Transnational Call is launched in the framework of the European Partnership #Water4All and supports research and innovation projects to improve water security in the long term. In line with the strategic objectives of Water4All, the results should contribute to the implementation of evidence-based, global, EU and national water management policies and strategies, including the #GreenDeal, the #WaterFramework Directive (WFD), #JustTransition and the #WaterActionAgenda for UN Sustainable Development Goals. Proposals should show cognisance of appropriate legislation and policy frameworks at national and international levels that are meant to alleviate global change impacts on aquatic ecosystem services.

***Breaking news regarding the BBNJ Agreement***   On 20th September 2023 has opened the process for signature of the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction. (the so called BBNJ Agreement). Among other states, the EU has signed it. The BBNJ Agreement is an international treaty aiming to regulate the sustainable use of and foster the protection of marine resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ), that is ca. 2/3 of the oceans. It aims to address biodiversity loss and the degradation of oceanic ecosystems as a result of the climate change impact. The BBNJ Agreement is an addition to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) that regulates all activities in the ocean.  The BBNJ Agreement regulates 4 main areas: -         The marine genetic resources including the fair and equitable sharing of benefits -         Area-based management tools including marine protected areas -         Environmental impact assessments -         Capacity building and the transfer of marine technology   The BBNJ text was adopted by consensus on 19 June 2023 by nearly 200 states. The EUDR’s adoption is a milestone, but now it needs to be implemented with strong involvement of small farmers, traditional and Indigenous communities, and the private sector. Deep cooperation, sustained investment and dialogue with and within producer countries is a priority. Support for Ratification of BBNJ Treaty’s Entry into Force   Source: #IISD SDG 14, 17     Representatives from government, NGOs, and civil societies convened in Brussels on March 7th, 2024, to expedite the ratification process of the high seas treaty, publicly known as the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement (BBNJ), that ensures the conversation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity areas. It was first drafted in 2023 with 58 more nations needed for entry into force. 📢 Trinomics warmly welcomes yesterday’s adoption by the EU's environment ministers of a European Nature Restoration Law (NRL)! 🌱 The NRL fills two important gaps in the EU’s policy framework to recover ecosystems from historic degradation: ✅ Firstly, it adds for the first time legally binding deadlines to restoration commitments made by the EU and its Member States in the framework of the UN Convention on Biodiversity  and in various existing EU Framework Directives on nature- and water protection. With deadlines for 2030, 2040 and 2050, the NRL provides a stable long-term framework for guiding concerted action. 📝 Secondly, the more explicit planning of concrete restoration measures by EU Member States in National Restoration Plans will be an important step forward in getting a more precise EU-wide understanding of what is needed to restore nature - and what not. Next to providing clarity, this will help filling important capacity gaps, for example in knowledge and funding, and increase accountability between EU Member States towards common objectives. ▶ Beyond the NRL's legislative added value, its adoption is mostly good news for Europe’s living world, including ourselves living and working in it: The recovery of well-functioning ecosystems over time will help us maintain and improve the wide range of critical benefits that are under threat and which we often take for granted such as natural carbon sequestration and storage, the mitigation of flood and draught risks, the pollination of our crops, or pest control. 🏘 🐝 🌾 🕷 Trinomics’ involvement in preparations for the NRL accelerated in 2019 when evaluating the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 and its missed headline target on nature restoration. We then supported the European Commission with assessing the impacts of a more binding framework to inform a proposal, and then later during the negotiations. We thank the Commission for this opportunity and our partners Institute for Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), UNEP-WCMC, Ecologic Institute, IUCN Regional Office for West Asia . 🤝 We would also like to congratulate negotiators in the three EU institutions, the Belgian EU Council Presidency, and all others who worked tirelessly towards a compromise that could be adopted today. 📢 CrossGov project partner Gunnar Sander from Norsk institutt for vannforskning (NIVA) has as a part of the work in CrossGov published a scientific article, which provides important messages about ocean governance and highlights why European approaches are important in a global context. 🌊 The observation that marine spatial planning has taken over as the ruling paradigm for ocean governance is important. So is the observation about the “conservationist camp’s” focus on marine protected areas (MPAs), forgetting ecosystem-based management as a more holistic approach that could ensure a better selection of the MPAs that are supposed to cover 30% of the oceans and better protection of the 70% outside MPAs. 🌊 The implications of this should provide input to the work in CrossGov’s work on biodiversity and pollution; the successful implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in all the MSs would probably have reduced some of the environmental problems we can observe in the European seas.
