Black Maternal Health Week is a time to raise awareness about the disparities in maternal health outcomes experienced by Black women in our community and across our country. Chief Executive Officer at Independence Blue Cross/Independence Health Group, Board Member (Financial Expert), Husband, Father, Philanthropist
This year for #BlackMaternalHealthWeek, I find myself reflecting on the shocking and unacceptable statistic that Black women are still three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts. And in Philadelphia, Black mothers are twice as likely as white women to die within one year of childbirth. We need to work together immediately to eliminate these disparities to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all. At Independence Blue Cross, improving black maternal health outcomes is a cornerstone of our efforts because so many lives depend on it. #BlackMaternalHealthWeek #HealthEquity #HealthJustice

Early detection and equitable care can change outcomes. Let's commit to empowering women with knowledge and support for better health outcomes.

~287,000 women died during and following pregnancy and childbirth in 2020, yet most maternal deaths could have been prevented. Almost 95% occurred in low and lower middle-income countries. The high number of maternal deaths in some areas of the world reflects inequalities in access to quality health services, according to the World Health Organization. All women deserve access to high-quality care in pregnancy, and during and after childbirth, as timely treatment can make a difference. #InternationalDayforMaternalHealthandRights #IntlMHRDay #MaternalHealth #BMHW24
